Gideon Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) I've always thought of Historica as about the size of Europe, as that would be able to explain both the cultural variations and the climate variations (from the tundra in northern Mitgardia=Scandinavia to the mediterranean climate/desert of Kaliphlin = Southern Spain/North Africa). Avalonia would then be something like France/Germany/Belgium (perhaps with a more British climate out on the isles to the west?) Without throwing myself into the discussion of the physics behind the climate difference between Mitgardia and Kaliphlin if Historica was very small, I think one huge problem with a too small Historica is that I find it hard for so many vastly different cultures to develop if they were living too close together. Besides, I like the idea of Historica being sort of a parallel fantasy Europe as we after all are here on Eurobricks As for Mitgardia, I've always considered it to resemble Scandinavia, so basicly we do have a summer, even if it's a shorter one than in Avalonia and I always considered Mitgardia's West coast under the influence of a warm ocean current, so basicly think Norway That is how I think about it as well, but I'd rather say Finland or northern Sweden than Norway, since the Gulf Stream keeps the Norwegian winters quite temperate and the ocean free of ice all year round. Further from the Atlantic (Sweden/Finland) however, the winters are much colder. I've had -40 (C or F doesn't matter at that temperature ) in north-eastern Sweden where I grew up but we still get +30 C in July sometimes. The spring and autumn are very short however, as there can be snow until early May and snow again in late September some years and even earlier further north. If the summer is early, there can sometimes still be snow on the ground in the shadow at the same time as the weather is really warm and nice. So that's my reference for Mitgardian climate If this is a good representation of the Mitgardian climate, the best time to be there is in June or early July when the outside temperature is nice and all the trees and flowers are takning the short opportunity to burst out in full bloom at the same time. I expect however that bad weather during the few weeks the Mitgardian people have to grow their crops could easily lead to famine? Edited February 25, 2014 by Gideon Quote
kabel Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Actually your idea isn't too far from mine, except that I'd say the coast does have a warm current, just like in Europe or Alaska, that's just the physics of climate. For example, in Skagway Alaska you still have a somewhat "mild" climate that actually supports a temperate rainforest. Once you cross the coastal range just a few miles form there (Chilkoot Pass) into the Yukon territory and you have it as continental as in Sweden or Finland. I was really fascinated by the area when I hiked it a few years ago and so actually you could say that Thorshaven could be compareable to Skagway. Quote
Gideon Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 That sounds very probable also for Mitgardia as well, provided that the scale of the map is sufficient that the warm current does not heat up significant parts of inner Mitgardia as well Quote
Mike S Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 @Nicemarmott- Can you make a revision to the bay on the east of Gorr? Here is a rough draft of what I think it should look like. Aden's Gate sits on the edge of the Kaumatua Mountains and is the only entrance to Kaumatua Valley where Mikel searched for the water crystal. I've been fooling around with different backdrops and arrangements for the city and have settled on a massive ancient wall closing the gap between the mountains where the river flows out of the valley into the bay. The 3 small green circles with palm trees in them are areas of thick jungle. The big green circle is the Kaumatua Mountain range of impassible mountains that surrounds Kaumatua Valley making a natural preservation for species that are rare or extinct elsewhere in Historica. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from the interior of Skull Island from Peter Jackson's King Kong. Quote
Mike S Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 My links still won't work. If you visit your cousin, CarsonHaupt, maybe he can show you how it is done. Quote
Gideon Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 My contribution to the trade between Kaliphlin and Mitgardia, providing the people of the north with oil in exchange for timber. Quote

gedren_y Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 My build time was severely curtailed this week. I did get an Anticlimax plot point build nearly done today, but it is a later part of the story. Anticlimax: Nestlands Market is taking longer than expected. I have all the figs done, but I still need to build several marketplace stalls and set up a bunch of flags. The diagonal portions got a little tricky. I will probably save the Mitgardian magical cooling device for some later build. I also have something large built for the interior of Bloodmane's Embassy Office in Nocturnus, but that will have to wait. I still want to know who controls Nocturnus before he is officially appointed. Quote
SkaForHire Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Just a reminder to everyone. The Freebuild deadline for quarter 1 has passed. Please make sure to update your freebuild registry so that when we tally them, yours will count. Also... things are now heating up on the seas. We may need to begin building ships to protect our trade (hint hint, upcoming challenge.) Quote
robuko Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Wow, that was just nasty. We may have to refit our fleet. Actually I have a ship lying around 3/4 finished that was due to deliver oil to Mitgardia, now I guess it will deliver burning oil to the Loki and the Grogslaughter. Quote
Kayne Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Sorry for the inactivity lately. I was hit once again by the Kaliphlin curse. Last Monday I thought my appendix was going to burst, so I went to the Doc and I had 2 kidney stones passing at once. Never had those before, recovered over the week, but now I have another going today. Very painful, so I have not been sitting at the computer or the bricks :( Quote
SkaForHire Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 Yikes, that sounds terrible. I hope you pass it quickly! Quote
TheUtilityBelt Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Like Ska said, I hope you pass it quickly! I've never had something that major happen to me, but I bet it feels terrible. Quote
robuko Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Good luck Kayne, sorry to hear your news. Sounds excruciating Quote

robuko Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 (edited) It's true because sand is awesome! It gives us our beautiful honey coloured sandstone houses, the glass window export trade, mirrors, the heliographic information advantage signaling network, and the super advanced fibre optic backbone thing that we don't tell the other guilds about.... Welcome to Kaliphlin RBC, delighted to see you here! Edited March 6, 2014 by robuko Quote
