NiceMarmot Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 You could start sooner, as you all know what is coming. OK. I'm going to "claim" the university tavern/pub as my build. If anyone else wants to beat me to it, go ahead, but that's what I'm building. Quote
Nightstalker Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Wait was is this university build? I'm still a newbie here, anyone got a link to previous MOC's? Quote
gedren_y Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Wait was is this university build? I'm still a newbie here, anyone got a link to previous MOC's? This is the original community build from 2012: Petraea University Quote
Gabe Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 @Gabe: Looking good. The Indiana Jones whip stretched out makes a good approximation of a wrapping vine. Slide a couple 3x4 leaves down the length of it to give it a lush feel. Dark red ones will make it look exotic or poisonous. Connecting multiples can get a bit tricky, depending on how tight you want the 'vines' secured. Thanks gedren, that sounds like a really neat technique! I only have a couple of those whips, sadly, but I'll have to try it out. @Gabe, Looking great! I never was a huge fan of sand green but I do like the architectural details! Thanks Kai! I love all the sand colours, they provide us builders with much needed tints without getting too pastel-y. I only wish i had more than a handful of sand red elements. Gabe, that's looking pretty epic. Can't wait to see the finished product. Where do the students sit however? On the stairs? Sounds good. I already know what I'll be building -- the MOC I planned but never got around to building for the first challenge! Thanks NM! The students have a couple of options - they can sit on the tiers between the stairs, or for the magic users who can teleport (or for students with flight capability), there will also be an upper gallery. There is also floor space if things get crowded. I'm thinking of making the rear alcoves cushion storage areas, where students will have access to something comfortable to sit on. I look forward to seeing your uni tavern btw - great choice! You could start sooner, as you all know what is coming. I was going to suggest that since the University celebrates diversity of Kaliphlin and all lands that perhaps some of the builds should be "decorated" for various holidays observed by the students attending. The reason for the later start date is I have another guild challenge in mind that would last from this week until Nov 15th, but we could overlap them and start on Nov 1st. Keep us all with many options to build. Ooh that's a cool idea - sandworm dances, water festivals, winter solstice in July for those northern types , lots of scope in there! Or what about a university open day? Quote
Kai NRG Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 That's probably why you're not in Avalonia. Yeah, that was certainly a good part of it! I should get internet access but probably not much building time during that period so as long as it's okay if I upload ahead of time and then post to GoH between mid-Nov and mid-Jan that should work out! SkaForHire Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 Kai, I think everyone would be fine with that. Quote
NiceMarmot Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Pretty quiet in Kaliphlin this weekend. Everyone home celebrating the Great Sandfly Festival with family? Hope to take a few more photos of my latest build tomorrow, and hopefully will get them photoshopped (GIMPed?) and posted Monday night. This will be the first lego pictures with our new camera, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out. We splurged on a Sony DSC-RX100, which so far has been a fabulous camera. Hopefully it does its magic on LEGO too. On another note, I'm thinking of doing a community advent calendar build this December, kinda like last year's. Anyone interested in participating? Be great if we could make it an all-Kaliphlin event. For those of you who weren't around, I posted one pic per day (unless we ran out of steam) of a small GoH build. The builds were little micro scale vignettes, or some small minifig scale creations. It's great for getting some quick microscale experience. Anyone interested? Quote
LegoDrake Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 A Kaliphlin advent calendar sounds pretty cool! I would be happy to participate. Quote
Gideon Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 An advent calendar would be great, I will gladly build a day or three Quote
kabel Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 just found this really nice article which could be an interesting source of inspiration for all Kaliphlin ship builders. Unfortunately it's only in German, but the pics are really interesting. Quote
Hammerstein NWC Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 (edited) I'm not a Kapa myself but if you would accept a non Kali building Kali I'd love to do some minifigs for you guys! Not sure how many peeps you have but just an offer of friendship from a Nocturnus scum :) Edited September 30, 2013 by Hammerstein NWC Quote

Not sure how many peeps you have but just an offer of friendship from a Nocturnus scum :) If you would like to have Kaliphlin side characters just go ahead! I have for example used a major Avalonian side character (although he was killed at the battle of Queenscross) and have a couple of Mitgardian side characters waiting to appear in some MOC in the future Quote

Hope you can get your pics up soon, i'm looking forward to seeing them. The advent calendar idea sounds great, i'd love to contribute something for it - small and quick sounds good after what i'm currently working on. just found this really nice article which could be an interesting source of inspiration for all Kaliphlin ship builders. Not sure how many peeps you have but just an offer of friendship from a Nocturnus scum :) Feel free to make some Kaliphlin figs, i've noticed that most of the ppl on GoH dabble in/visit the other guilds from time to time. ~~~~~~~ Few more WIP shots of my lecture theatre build - i've nearly topped out now! This was from a couple of days ago Pic taken this morning. Got to get onto the dome cladding now - tricky cause it has to be visible from both inside and outside. It's doing my head in! ps. If you guys are sick of all these WIP pics please let me know! I post them cause i do care about getting the input of other guildies and i can get a bit stir crazy working on this day after day on my ownsome. Quote
Torgar Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Wow, that build is incredible Gabe! I absolutely love the dome. I cant wait to see it finished! Quote
SkaForHire Posted October 1, 2013 Author Posted October 1, 2013 Gabe, keep posting, that is what we are here for. I am just amazed at that dome, and I am imagining something spectacular when you are done. The inside might be tricky though. If you have a lot of 1x1 tiles in various colors you could build mosaics in each dome panel. Quote
NiceMarmot Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Gabe, thanks for posting! I love the WIP shots. It really helps me figure out how someone built something. Otherwise I'm stuck looking at some finished product photo, where half the time you can't really see the techniques used. I've finally posted the next chapter in the Retracing Our Steps linear community build (part of the Raising the Dead project). Take a look. Gideon Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Gabe, continue to keep us updated! It makes a Kaliphlin stuck in building for Avalonia (LUG work really but Avalonian-ish setting) remember why I stayed in Kaliphlin And it looks great! Quote
Gabe Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Wow, that build is incredible Gabe! I absolutely love the dome. I cant wait to see it finished! Thanks Torgar! Yeah i can't wait to see it finished either - i only have 2 more days of building before i have to pack it up and take it to the Seymour show. I wish i could manage to be more orginised, but i'm always building heaps at the last minute it seems... Gabe, keep posting, that is what we are here for. If you have a lot of 1x1 tiles in various colors you could build mosaics in each dome panel. Thanks Ska, glad you like it! Yeah, the inside of the dome is a little interesting - i have managed to get a lot of those tiles with studded backs (in tan and dark bley) recently so i'm planning on using them. However i've decided against a full "double-shell" dome - it's just too tricky right now. Part of the ceiling will be the inside of the outer shell, and part will be attached to the lower beams in a star shaped pattern around the central apeture - ugh this description makes no sense but i'll post pics later to hopefully show you what i mean! Yeah i know what you mean NM, i love WIP's for that reason too - also i like to have a stickybeak at how other ppl set up their work area, their order of tasks etc. I love your intro shot at the lakeside - just beautiful, looks like your new camera works just fine! I'll go and have a look at the whole entry today. Gabe, continue to keep us updated! I think I follow you. You talking about the 2x2 jumper plates? Looking forward to seeing how you do the roof. I suppose the plates that are attached to different beams will have to just overlap, and not actually be fastened to each other, because of the circular shape. How did you do the round white part in the middle of the dome? The standard technique of 1x2 bricks with 1x1 round bricks between them? How did you do the round towers too? (I don't have a lot of experience with round towers and walls, so I'm always curious about them. Will have to think of a freebuild that will challenge me to build round.) I love your intro shot at the lakeside - just beautiful, looks like your new camera works just fine! I'll go and have a look at the whole entry today. Thanks. I'm pretty happy with the way it all turned out. And very happy with the new camera. I think it's taking great photos. It's got a nice huge 1" sensor. It's also got a lot of features, and can be set to full manual mode, so I can really control what it's doing. And I'm finally really feeling comfortable using GIMP to clean up the pics, so it's not taking me two hours per photo anymore to edit out the backgrounds and stuff. Quote
Gideon Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks Gideon! Ooh, are you working towards a show or something too? Which LUG are you in? I'm in the Swedish LUG Swebrick. Right now I'm working hard on a module for our first medieval community build, due to be displayed only a week from now. I can try to get a WIP up, but sadly I'm not going to have time to finish the whole diorama in time to the exhibition to the level of detail I started out with if at all... I think I follow you. You talking about the 2x2 jumper plates? I think he means 2x2 inverted tiles? Quote
NiceMarmot Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I think he means 2x2 inverted tiles? Oh, that makes sense. I think I've got like one of those! Checking on BrickLink, they're expensive. Doing the whole dome in those would add up to some serious money! Quote
gedren_y Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Just got the facade of the High Ministry of the Nestlands Clans building roughly done. This will be my backdrop for the Nestlands Market. For this build I was able to use a variation of the nose-cones of the Eagle Tribe's vehicles from LoC. I had two of them designed for months, but haven't been able to get them incorporated into a build properly. Sorry, no WIP images as the camera is down. Lookin' great, Gabe. Quote

Gideon was right, i was talking about 2x2 inverted tiles, but as it turned out i used the 2x2 jumper plates for the ceiling as well, i'm quite pleased with the diamond pattern. The inverted tiles are expensive (being a relitively new part), but i managed to get a lot of them in a group order for a very reasonable price. It's certainly nice to be able to really go to town with them. The round central apeture is just 2x2 bricks and plates attached to piggybacked Hinge Plate 1 x 4 Swivel Top / Base Complete Assembly . The whole apeture is attched to the frame at the front arch, and basically it covers the technic armiture that all the light bley beams are attached to. The towers are a different beast altogether and are based on a technique that i saw someone use to create a rocket module - sadly i can't find the original images to reference but i'll chase them up later when i have more time. Basically there is an 8 sided core inside the towers based on hinge plates and clips. The odd shaped wedge plates i've used for the towers are Wedge, Plate 4 x 9 without Stud Notches . I've also added technic axles and poles between the segments to stabilise them, although they are still a bit wobbly! Anyway, here are some more pics as of this morning. Still a bit to do today, but most of the structural stuff is over, thank goodness! Shot of the ceiling - hopefully makes my previous description a bit clearer. Outside of the (mostly) finished dome. Ah cool! A week is not long at all, but sometimes a pressure build can produce inspired work, so best of luck! I'm sure you will impress. Sometimes i find that it helps to remember that most ppl looking at your display aren't going to be picking it apart the way other builders might on the forums, so you can be a bit looser in your approach.
