Smaller towns might definitely be specialized in a certain area (for example due to natural resources nearby), but larger cities of course have a more varied mix of craftsmen and traders.

Generally, if you build quality MOCs showing what your settlement is producing no one will contradict that claim

I'm sure this could be better answered by more experienced Historicans, but I'll give it a go. Here's the thing: while many cities establish a reputation for a particular skill or product, they still need a broad set of skills in order for the community to thrive. For example, while Ruadh may be famed for the skill of its artists, we also have stone-cutters, farmers, and other tradesmen who live in the settlement -- without them, our community would collapse. Thisis a good thread that describes some of the things necessary to have a viable city. So, while your city might be famed for metalworking, you'd still get to (and be somewhat expected to) have a variety of other types of tradesmen and their MOCs in your city.

Alright thank you guys for the information! I just don't want to get ahead of myself and seem like a fool when I actually do get my builds up in the upcoming few months. I want a strong and prosperous civilization but maintain the "scary" aspect since mine will only be comprised of Orcs.

I can't find the topic for the "Mount Up!" challenge, I need to know when it ends! I may be able to get a creature up next month if I still have time. Do any of you guys have one entered or are going to make one?

They have been known to be fashion models in GoH. Though the loincloths' don't really cut it in winter...

I am over a terabyte I believe, but I bought the service during the Battle of Queenscross because I went over the original 400 megs or whatever it was... then they gave everyone a terabyte free. But Now I am definitely over the terabyte, and I still have the pro subscription for another year.

Over a terabyte!!! That's crazy!!!! I already have 80 photos and I have only used up 0.012% of my terabyte! That means( if I did my math right, which I'm pretty sure was right) it would take about 660,000 pictures to fill up a terabyte.

You only have 1000ish photos.

Your pictures can't take up That much more space than mine, can they?( even if they are HD or something)

Dang, I don't think I'll make it for the challenge.

It's still 20 days. That's not that short a building period, especially for something that's relatively small unless you are really busy or something. I'm sure if you really want to enter this mini challenge you will able to find a little bit of time.

I have like no good pieces for this at all, that's the thing. I'm also ordering parts either by the very end of this month or very early next month.

I just bought several legend beasts and mixels at local stores and then mixed them with pieces from my collection. That's a good way to start and is reasonably cheap, and it provided a good chunk of the parts of my entry

I shoot on full res with a 24 or 16 mp camera, it gets eaten up quickly. On the other hand, I was totally half asleep when I wrote that... I think... I meant 10 gigs I actually deleted a bunch too... I don't know why I was thinking of terebyte. Seriously... very tired. Glad my second trip got cancelled (that was a disaster though).

Excellent to have you here Siedna Ruadh! Your city sounds incredibly intriguing.

Do you guys care if I post the stories (for my sig-fig, faction, ect.) even if I don't have pictures yet or no?

We do care. Please post more MOCs than you do chatting posts. This is an adult Lego forum, not a chat room.

It's a forum, as long as it's related to whatever is going on, it doesn't matter.

Now it's starting to seem like you want to try and start something by the looks of it.

Does that mean we will be getting a Witherwoods Battle update soon? :excited:

Yeah. Its coming. Maybe tonight, unless my wife gets greedy and makes me catch up on television shows. haha.

I think stepping back here is appropriate, remember we can't always judge the tone of others on a text based communication like this. I think He was just saying that he would like to see more MOCs before more story. Part of the GOH experience is that we illustrate our stories with our builds, so that others can imagine how it fits into the grand scheme of things. We understand that you are waiting on your blocks, but I think your stories will be 10x better with the visuals attached. That is not to say that we do not want to hear from you though, just that lets leave the major story elements until there are some MOCs to go with them.

Well, it's something you all are going to have to wait and see for yourselves. Especially me. I know I talk a lot of big game and I'd like to demonstrate how much better I can do than my first MOC, which was just a flop and a waste. And I'm not sure if MKJoshA's intention was to sound like a jerk or not, but I am not really looking for his two-cents. Honestly, I just want to opinion's of the people of Kaliphlin and very active members of GoH. But I can guarantee that once I do get a hold of all the brick and parts I'll be purchasing, I will demonstrate what I can. Photography is what gets me though.

To some extent, yes, as much as any artists are settled. The artists of Ruadh come from all over the kingdom to train at Atelier Ruadh, and after training, they leave to seek their fortune. Traditionally, artists of this time period often lead a somewhat nomadic existence: They'll be hired by a wealthy family to create one our more pieces of art. When the commission(s) are complete, the artist will leave to seek a new patron. One might work for a family (or city, religious leader, or anyone else looking to hire them) for as little as one month, or be kept on retainer for several years.

I might have to hire one to paint some portraits to hang in Castle Burnby!

You say you don't want his two cents, because he's not a member of Kaliphlin, and claim he's not very active. However, you give your opinion on everything from any guild, and has posted only build one compared to 684 posts of chatter. He is a very nice guy, and definitely not being a jerk, so I think your reaction was too strong for the circumstances.

Greetings, Kaliphlin!

Please allow me to humbly introduce myself.

My name is Siedna Ruadh, acclaimed artist and founder of both the settlement of Ruath, and Atelier Ruadh, Historica's most reputable artists' workshop.

Welcome in our beautifull Guild Sarah! As Kaliphlin is well-known for its good taste and fine manners, your artists will certainly be a part of our cities :)

So you are a royal painter? Awesome idea and it can make you very wealthy in GoH!

I have a question myself. I'm assuming all cities revolve around a particular skill set, can my city maybe be mastered in smithing (especially)? I also do like architecture, stone-working, woodworking, military, and wealth. So perhaps can mine be maybe good at all the skills, like a little empire? I like metalworking a lot for my concept in GoH but I'd love to choose all I listed.

Like others said, a city needs a lot of different things. There can also be more than one city specialised in a certain skill. Qarkyr for example has a great fame as mining city :)

(Mpya) Stedor is very famous for its gem-mining, goldsmithing and weapons (there have been builds made in the past)

The only thing you have to take in count is the location :) a city in the forests will have no opportunities to become a mining while a city in the mountains has nothing to do with wood :)

Yep, absolutely! In fact, it's very likely that there are several Ruadhi working in a city as large and wealthy as Barqa. :classic:

Perfect! I will incorporate a Ruadhi in my WIP !

Have they something special so you can easily recognise them?

I appreciate that you are taking in feedback regarding what kind of content would be appropriate in Kaliphlin and that is perfectly fine use of this thread if you ask me. When it comes to new content like the backstory of your sigfig etc I would advise you to post that along with the builds as this is after all a MOC based project. Of course if you want feedback on what the backstory contains (for the purpose of having it fit well in the GoH world) you can continue to ask about it here, just don't go ahead and start creating a lot of lore before you can back it up with builds. There's no rush, GoH will still be here when you get your bricks :classic:

First of all, Gabe, big congrats on landing the dream job! That's amazing (although you're very well qualified)! Please keep us all informed about the types of builds you're doing for your job.

Congratz to Gabe, on the job and the win! And Congratulations to Kayne as well, well deserved both of you!

Thanks NM and Kai! Just finished my first day on the job, phew! I can't talk too much out of school here, but first impressions are that i'll be working in a wide variety of scales. It's certainly challenging and hopefully will contribute to make me a better builder. :classic:

So now I'm all fired up with no place to build. Starting a new job Monday, but will have to see about getting a new building table that is high enough to be puppy proof, and get back to building!

We've only ever had cats, and they can be destructive enough to a building space. I can't think of any suggestions that haven't already been aired, hope you get a workable solution soon!

Greetings, Kaliphlin!

Please allow me to humbly introduce myself.

My name is Siedna Ruadh, acclaimed artist and founder of both the settlement of Ruath, and Atelier Ruadh, Historica's most reputable artists' workshop.

I'm a new AFOL, interested in becoming a better builder. I'm attracted to Historica, and Kaliphlin in particular, for the dedication to improving LEGO building skills through specific constructive criticism and encouragement. The quality of the builds here serves both as inspiration and goals.

Over time, I intend to show the early founding and establishment of my settlement of Ruadh, and how my settlement has grown and continues to grow. I hope my small portion of Historica, as an artists' community, will provide interest and richness to the Historica tapestry.

My plan is to start small and then build to larger MOCs, as my bricks and skills will allow. I intend to use AoM as a loose inspiration, and work to establish recognition of my settlement through the Royal Cartographer's Guild of Albion. As my skills improve, I hope to earn credits through the University of Petraea.

I'm looking forward to improving my build skills and creating an interesting settlement/story-line with the Historica community.

Welcome to Kaliphlin Siedna! Great intro - Ruadh sounds fascinating, i can't wait to see you bring it to life!

I now have four Tradesman degrees from our Petraea University Doctorate of Historica program; Architecture, Geography, Anthropology, and Culture. That makes me a Master (with one to spare) now! (You can check the credits out here.)

Woot, congrats Kai! I always meant to do a small build celebrating Gideon's Bachelors degrees, i might have to make it into a dual graduation!

Mate, i wouldn't describe any moc that someone makes and posts as "just a flop and a waste". For a start, every build you produce provides you with a baseline to challenge yourself against with your next moc. Furthermore, you will often get helpful advice from other ppl about your posted work - noone can help you improve if they can't see what you can already do!

It seems to me that you are very anxious to make a good impression with your first mocs, to have some kind of "wow" factor that makes you stand out from the crowd. But at the moment, the only way you are standing out is by the sheer amount of text posts that you are producing. I think it's great that you are so excited about contributing to the GoH world, but perhaps it's time to step back on asking for approval for all your ideas and refine your backstory a bit in private. That way, when you do have a big intro moc that you are happy with to post, it will have a greater impact as we won't have heard of it everyday for two weeks. Just relax a little! Post a small vignette, or microscale, or experiment with making furniture or custom purist weapons etc. (I know you don't have many bricks, but i know you do have some - i've seen 'em! ) Don't worry too much about canon, just get in there are start bricking.

1. First and foremost, this is a Lego building forum. Feel free to start a single thread where you post your own stories even if there is not a MOC, but you should not be posting stories in new threads or guild threads if you don't have a MOC to go with it.

2. Guild threads are meant for general discussion or links to your own topic threads. You should not be posting full stories or multiple pictures in these threads. There are some exceptions, such as Avalonia's mini-challenges, but these are the exception, not the rule.

I get the want to make a big entrance. I certainly did when I created the Nestlands Clans of the Armored Eagle Goddess. My first build was far from what I wanted it to be, but I took my time in creating a narrative and backstory. From your questions and the ideas you've put forth, I think you have a good story coming. GOH is a long running thing. Like others have said, you have plenty of time.

There is always the LDD option. Myself and others have done them to great effect, though their value as freebuilds is less, and no aftermarket parts. It is also a good way to experiment with building techniques, and use as a template when you get the parts you need for a real build. You can also create fantasy builds with parts in colors that they were never produced in. Check out my Gurree Spring.

Well every time I look at what other people make, it just makes me feel like my MOC's are decrepit compared the everyone else's. I just don't want to disappoint people like I did with my first one, it got knocked off the front page super fast because it wasn't as nice as other MOC's you see here. I just want to blow your guys' socks off when you see my stuff. But I suppose I can make microscale MOC's to give insight how my city would look like.

But am I even allowed the post things in GoH like a unique weapon with a back-story or something?

But since you are a History Regulator, I'd like the permission first. And do the other guilds ever get mini-challenges?

I can't guarantee my story will be perfect, but it certainly will be enjoyable and well worth the wait. There are many dangers in Historica, but nothing like what I'll release, in pictures, next month.

Last time I tried LDD, It was super buggy and laggy, but this was years ago. I'm also not sure if my computer will handle it considering It's impossible to play a computer game on this computer. But I'll probably give it a try.

Don't worry about having these extravagant first few builds. Take your time and evolve your builds as you go along. Most of the time when someone new joins, they have pretty small builds and some aren't that good, (no offense to anyone) but the evolved over time and might make huge fortresses like SK. Know what I'm sayin'?

Feel free to make a thread that display your stories and ideas. You can add as many posts as you'd like, and you can go back and edit your post afterwards.

Ska is the Guild leader for Kaliphlin, so his word is law in this thread as well. Each guild has different contests - Kaliphlin has the University challenge at present, which is far more comprehensive then the Avalonian mini-challenges have been.
