Kai NRG Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 The top is really very good, I think you could probably just tear that part off without destroying it too much and rebuild the bottom. The other thing you could do would be to make a house or other structure (wood or stone, probably) built up against the bottom. Personally I think it's fine without color variations. Is it supposed to be stone, or sand? If sand, the jutting out sections are highly unrealistic. If stone, I would suggest not putting it on a tan base, to highlight the fact that it's not the same as it's surroundings. I really think though that a house or something would fix most of that. And then, if this is supposed to be the back of the build (is there going to be a booth somewhere?) you could just not show us this side... Oh, and I went ahead and posted here rather than PMing since after all a main point of the guild thread is to post and get advice on WIPs! Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 haha, look what you got there under your profile, and those Nocturnians too! Thanks kabel! Sweet tag. Quote
gedren_y Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I just finished a small vig that began with table scrap and a troll big-fig. I will try to have it up tomorrow. I'm thinking the setting is near Eastgate. Quote

Bregir Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 *snip* ...Sorry, y'all. I'm really working to knock out some Ruadh builds as quickly as I can. Y'all have done such lovely guest builds in Ruadh; I'm trying to get enough native builds finished and posted that I can justify a Ruadh topic to bring it all together. Hi SarahJoy - as I wrote to someone else, don't get too stressed about getting builds up - take your time and remember that it is a creative process, not a factory! Nobody is pacing you! (Except for the fact that I am really, really REALLY (Spaceship!?) looking forward to seeing more of Ruadh!! ) Put up builds in your own time, when you feel ready to present them or have feedback. For one, I think the stonework landscape thingy is looking rather nice - but if it is holding you back from something you would rather build, I suggest you put it aside for a while and turn to the other build - That's what works best for me - I normally have a number of "drafts" under construction at any time Quote
NiceMarmot Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Eccles, or whomever, thanks a ton for the new shield tag! I like the name of the of the image too... By the way, maybe you could look into what happened to my other tag? The image disappeared. Here's a conceptual question for y'all more experienced builders: How often do you rebuild / how much do you rework a build, before you decide it's finished and ready to share (or you're finished with looking at it)? I'm not sure I'm one of those more experienced builders, but I usually rework a build a moderate amount during construction. I rarely tear it all apart and rebuild. Usually I'll just play with a section or element for a while until I get it right. I often have a general idea of what I want to do, but feel that I need to make the details 'cooler', so I'll play with some particular element a bunch until I get it right. Sometimes the build doesn't come together the way I want it to and I abandon the whole thing. Ugh. Okay, here's the back side of the WIP build at present. I'm going to end up rebuilding it, because first drafts are never satisfactory. : Ignoring that fact that the WIP photos make it look like a big pile of dirty slush, you can see where I need to completely rebuild the bottom half or so of the rock structure, adding structural detail and breaking up those unnatural curves. The whole thing also needs some color variation. Blergh. Really don't want to rebuild this one, mostly because I'd like to move on to a new build and continue to establish Ruadh, but . . . this doesn't meet standards for either GoH or my own expectations. (Please PM any C&C, to keep this thread uncluttered.) This doesn't look so bad, especially as a base. Sure it's all one color, but you could add a bit of color to it, especially at the bottom. It wouldn't be hard to pop off some cheese slopes and 1x2 slopes here and there and put on ones of different colors. You could also add different colored slopes up against the base of the rock too. Otherwise I don't think the bottom half is that bad. Plus if there was foliage on the bottom, or maybe structures up against the rock, it would look a lot better. Of course, I don't know what your vision for it was, so it's hard to give advice. By the way, everyone, I just finished a big (four baseplates) build, which I cannot yet reveal However, it came together much more quickly than usual, so I'm feeling confident and fired up, and will have to see if I can ride the momentum and crank out another (smaller) build or two in the next week or so. Maxim I Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 One small question, how does it comes I don't have a tag? Seriously? Quote
NiceMarmot Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 One small question, how does it comes I don't have a tag? Seriously? Your MOCs clearly aren't nearly large enough. You still seem to have room to walk around in your house, barely. Seriously, I don't have any idea. Perhaps whoever did it just hasn't gotten around to adding it to your account? Quote
Ecclesiastes Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 One small question, how does it comes I don't have a tag? Seriously? Still working on it;) Quote
Maxim I Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Still working on it;) Thanks a lot! :) Quote

SkaForHire Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 One small question, how does it comes I don't have a tag? Seriously? You were on the original list, you must have saw these when they were half finished. They are for the many vital members of Kaliphlin since the near beginning. (Same with the other three guilds) I am guessing that we will reward more people with them as time goes on. ----- Alright, as Mitgardia is about to go to civil war, we are going to start getting ready for our challenge set up. NM has kindly already created a MOC for our prologue / story. I am working on one to kick it all off too. So, now is the time to volunteer to help build prologue MOCs. These should be completed by November 15th. I have a list of who will build what if they volunteer, and I will have you email me pictures of the builds to weave into the story. After the story goes up, we will post a Sandstorm of all the mocs (everyone would open up their moc pictures to the public on that day and create new threads for comment) So what I need is for those who wish it to volunteer to build and I will send you a PM to discuss what you can build, and what needs built for the overall stroryline (everyone will have some leeway of course). I am not going to tell anyone the overall story so that most everyone is surprised when it all gets posted. The in game prize for participating here is that your character (or side character) can formally be part of the Mythweavers Guild of Kaliphlin. Quote
TheUtilityBelt Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 (edited) I said I would Ska, but I'm currently wrapped up in SHIPtember on flickr. But who knows. Maybe I'll have the time after all. Edited September 3, 2014 by TheUtilityBelt32 Quote
Maxim I Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Well, I am in :) The faster I know what to build the faster I can start building :D Quote
Scaevola Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I'm definitely in! (Finally an incentive to bring me out of my rut ) Quote
Yzalirk Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 (edited) November 15th? I'll gladly help out out for the prologue builds, as long as they are reasonable so I will definitely help out as best I can. I may be busy with High School a lot but I can try to make some time for a some builds before the end date. I'll PM you my WIP's since it seems to be easier for me. Baby came this morning so I'm out for at least the next two weeks and then from October on you probably won't see too much of me until the spring (I'll be online still, I just don't anticipate too much time for building), but if you let me know what to build now I can start mentally working out a build to put together sometime within the last two weeks of this month. I can then shelf it for the November 15th or whenever the Sandstorm is set for. Quote

Thomas of Tortuga Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I'm in, if there's still room. I recently built a 16x16 tavern overnight for another challenge's kickoff. I can make November 15th Quote
SkaForHire Posted September 4, 2014 Author Posted September 4, 2014 Congrats Mike! Alright everyone, there is plenty of room. I want to finish up the story overnight and then I will try to get the PMs out tomorrow evening. Oh yeah, and there are still plenty of things left for those who still want to volunteer Quote
Gabe Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Great builds Gideon, DM and Kai! Sorry i'm so slow in getting around to comment on stuff atm. Ugh. Y'all have done such lovely guest builds in Ruadh; I'm trying to get enough native builds finished and posted that I can justify a Ruadh topic to bring it all together. It's looking pretty good to me SarahJoy. You have some nice shapes and textures going on there. Sure the bottom section of the outcrop looks very straight up and down, but i don't think that it looks unnatural or out of place. An easy way to break up that area would be to prop up some slopes and plates against it, maybe add some vegetation and small bits of ground clutter (stones etc), or hide it with man-made structures or even minfig action - i've done that before! Consider what can be seen by the viewer - it's often a lot less than you see yourself as a builder. I agree the rock would look amazing with some different colour in there - dark tan, light bley/grey and dark orange are nice for that - maybe just some stripes for rock seams etc. But yeah, that could be a bit of work. As for your earlier question about reworking - i often try to build from the base up, but it doesn't always work out like that, and i do spend quite a bit of time tearing down to get at previous levels, or reworking sections and trying to shoehorn them back into the whole. Sometimes (not often, but it does happen) i scrap things entirely if i run out of steam or build myself into a corner. Or i just shove the build to one side and wait for inspiration to strike while i get on with something else.
