I know Ska was looking at a Greek theme for the Kali civil war. Varylio tends to be a bit more Mediterranean, but I look at it as more Renaissance. Greek/Roman influences certainly fit best in Kali, although I could easily get some of them into the other guilds. Play around a bit, there not that many Greek/Roman-esque builds around!

I didn't want to spoil it but I might as well but this is something I've been looking forward to doing for a long while and with the holidays coming up somewhat soon, I can get parts necessary for these types of builds. I don't want to leak anything else but I would love to do this so much when the time comes. But I will give little leaks as to possible people that could be featured in the project in the future.

We had a few members that only made greek looking builds a long time ago. When it was all decided, Kaliphlin was basically everything that was not Northern European, dark fantasy and perhaps Subsaharan Africa. Although we do have Jungles. The main culture groups were actually Arab, Mediterranean, north African, and East Asian. Just the greek influence has been quite light as of lately.

Could the Mediterranean vibe come back or no?

Could the Mediterranean vibe come back or no?

It never left, just the builders who were doing it primarily did. Mediterranean away, man! If you put them on the southeastern coastal areas, it will gel nicely with what is coming.

You'll notice that, right now, smaller builds and projects have been more common in GoH with larger, more time intensive builds on the backburner due to other stuff going on in the Lego community (SHIPtember) and because school is back on for a lot of us. I think this just indicates that trends come and go, and right now no one is really into building Greco-Roman so it has yet to make a comeback. You could bring it back.

So I think it's more like what people have been into building lately vs. a while back when more were perhaps inspired to do Greco-Roman stuff. I'd just try and keep such things located on the coastal regions of Kaliphlin to fit with the Mediterranean nature of Greco-Roman civs. The Northwest coast (Southeast I guess?) seems fitting because of Varlyrian influence.

Anyways, it's not like the Greco-Roman style cities and castles that once existed in Kali have sunken into the ocean or something. Like uh... a certain lost continent or something. Maybe. Never mind.

I recall seeing some Roman soldiers in Kaliphlin, and I have myself included an ancient Greek styled ruin along the Arkbri river. (There are probably plenty of ruins of different kinds scattered throughout Kaliphlin)

I try to at least incorporate some Roman/Byzantine technology in my builds, for example Roman styled roads, Byzantine "Greek Fire" and for a long time I've been thinking of doing an aqueduct build.

Anyway, I think it would be great to see some more ancient Greece/Rome themed Kaliphlin builds, and as Ska has given a hint of where they fit in best geographically I suggest locating it there.

All this talk of Greco-roman has made me want to build a Mediterranean abbey! Any suggestion where I could build one? Or invitations? Or angry mobs with pitchforks chasing me out of your guild?

@Behemoth: Pal, if I was your Geography teacher I'd have you in detention with an Atlas in your hands every single day!

My school technically doesn't have Geography though, at least not my courses do.

Yes, the gold does look out of place. A black wedge plate roof might be more in keeping with the build. Depending on the internal structure, you might be able to add a bell to the tower.

The outpost appears to have been built with stone from different sources, as if it was made from leftover quarried material and stone collected from much older sites.

Your wave technique is inspired, but I would suggest you put some loose trans plates in the dips between the waves. It might add a bit more sense of motion.

A crenellated square roof? The gold dome looks too heavy and ornate for this build I think.

Behemoth, Greco Roman is good anywhere. How about in our beautiful and very underbuilt capital?

Carson, any of the free cities of Kaliphlin would be honoured by your abbey. They are Petraea, Qarkyr and Barqa. It is best to get Gideon's permission for Barqa as he is the custodial lord (I think he is traveling at the moment)

After a lot of talking (and some WIP-sharing) I'm finally finished with my major build for Lego Fan Weekend (starting Friday in Skaerbaek, Denmark...see you there? :classic:)

I've been longing to flesh out Barqa some more for a long time, and finally I had the opportunity. Hope you will enjoy it!

I would be honored to but this will be a future project I plan to initiate, hopefully, if everyone here is fine with it.

I will try to get permission to build in or around Barqa, as it's the most coastal of the three and I'd like to build there.

I tried black slopes as an alternative and am still not sure which to use.

The black slopes would probably work better if I had enough 2 x 2 corner slopes on hand to make the roof the some angle, the rest of my black slopes are buried in a 50L box of table scraps and sets i'm breaking up for parts. :sceptic:

Hi guys! Ive been stuck in real life things these past weeks. So whats happened these past weeks?

Welcome back! Highlights would be:

Mitgardian war prelude, Gideon's mega build of Barqa, Behemoth actually built something ;)

While the black roof is a bit plain, I think the color is more cohesive with the rest of the build.

My current GoH project: The Ruadhic artists need aprons. I tried using a few different options from BrickWarriors, but I wasn't really happy with them, so it's time to make my own!

It's based on the apron I actually wear when I'm painting, and uses a template by armothe. I have the basic shapes and stitching done; now I need to add wrinkles, paint, etc. When it's finished, I'll try printing it on a few different types of paper, and see what looks best.

@SarahJoy: Great idea for a mod. I do a lot of custom fabric pieces but they aren't super high-quality because I don't sew! I use felt for furs and other types of cloth for tents, sails, etc.

For an apron, I might cut the shape out with just a hole (single hole punches for the win!) for the head and then tighten the lower, leg part with an elastic (as a belt). I may try something like that soon and we should compare.

If you nail this down into something close to what some of the customizers do out there, like RoyalBricks for example, I'd be interested in buying some and/or any other custom minifig cloth accessories you might make. I have a feeling you'll be a lot better at it than me. :D

BrickCurve, the last pictures are the best roof option so far. It would be even better with an overhang for the eaves. I still think you could have a good look with a castellated mixed stone roof on the tower.

A compromise between the 2 other roof alternatives.

I like this! The only thing that looks wonky is the peak of the roof -- the gold and tan pieces look out of place. Continuing the browns and black would make the roof look more unified.

 You think too highly of my skills! There's no way I'd be able to create the apron I want using fabric -- attempting to achieve that level of detail, in a woven fabric, at minifig scale -- way beyond me.

No, this apron will be printed on good quality paper. Creating the design in Illustrator allows me to create a sleek, detailed look that mirrors LEGO's graphic style somewhat; right now, it's looking more like a custom decal than like custom cloth accessories. I want something that's easily reproducible, inexpensive, and accessible to any GoH member, and a printable design seems like the best way to do that.
