BrickCurve Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) Really? (not sarcasm) I was figuring something like 100 1x1 rounds to every 6x6, which in my experience has been plenty (though I haven't counted, but I know 100 is a small handful). I'm assuming, too, that only the parts with blue plates are going to be covered. I am going to attempt to cover all the green as well, (I just ran out of blue plates). Kai NRG Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) I am going to attempt to cover all the green as well, (I just ran out of blue plates). Ah I see. In that case yes, you'll likely need a couple thousand, especially if you leave the green open to view. You might be able to get away with 1500, especially if you had a rock or a small boat out in the water somewhere. To be honest I really don't know how many I have, but based on how full a bag with 100 is, and how full my bag with all of them is, I'd guess I have 2000-3000 of the dk blue, and if I recall correctly I used almost all of them (not quite) on this build. That's about 16x32 and a touch deeper than it needed to be though I did have blue plates (with studs) beneath. Edited October 14, 2014 by Kai NRG Quote
Yzalirk Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 I'll be trying to get up a build hopefully sometime at the end of the week. Also, I got a new concept/idea for a race I thought would work well in Historica. Quote
gedren_y Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I have a nice base built for the Nestlands Embassy in Mitgardia. It has a somewhat modular styling to the sidewalk. Quote
mrcp6d Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I am going to attempt to cover all the green as well, (I just ran out of blue plates). I'd count up the stud area you're looking to cover and multiply that by 5 or 6. Quote
Gabe Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Hey all; sorry i've been away for the last little while, work has just been kicking my butt energy-wise. Great to see so many amazing mocs coming out of the guild, although it's a bit intimidating to know where to jump in and start commenting again! Gideon, the pic of your table at Skaerbaek looks very cool - great to see all your builds together. I'm getting excited about challenge III - i've just realised Mitagardia is the one guild i haven't built in yet, looks like that is going to change soon! On a side note, what do ppl think about the "Elves" theme for next year? I had a sqiz on Brickset and was pleasantly surprised. Some interesting parts and colours in there i thought. Quote
NiceMarmot Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 thanks for pointing out the elves theme. I've been so out of it this year I didn't even know about that theme. the parts and the colors look pretty interesting. Especially like that new fence piece. I don't buy a lot of sets these days unless they are on clearance. But I will probably definitely Bricklink some of those parts. By the way, you don't want to know what Auto-Correct suggested when I was typing "I don't buy a lot of sets"... Glad I caught that one before I hit Post; could have been quite embarrassing! Quote
Kayne Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Gabe, I was thinking the same thing when I looked at those sets. There are some great new color availabilities for staple parts. The purple leaf pieces may be my personal favorite! Quote

By the way, you don't want to know what Auto-Correct suggested when I was typing "I don't buy a lot of sets"... Glad I caught that one before I hit Post; could have been quite embarrassing! Ahaha i think i can guess... That slip would have been title-worthy for sure! Gabe, I was thinking the same thing when I looked at those sets. There are some great new color availabilities for staple parts. The purple leaf pieces may be my personal favorite! Yeah, totes, the new foliage colours are great. And then there is the carrot leaf in brown, the gothic half aches in tan, dark red and brown, the gold minifig wings, the scissors, the trans-purple bricks and loads of purple and med azure generally, plus the new hair peices. I'm also wondering if the flower stalk in the tree in "Fairan and the crystal hollow" is a new part - looks like it attaches more than three flowers? Quote
robuko Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 The fence piece is fantastic, it appears in the prelim pictures for the sets that haven't appeared on brick set, I think it was sand green in one and maybe lilac in the other. Loads of great pieces and colours in the elves range, the six stem flower is a win and the hair pieces look good too. We could do some nice guerrilla builds in Avalonia Quote
NiceMarmot Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Has anyone played around with this round wall technique? I stumbled across it this morning while fooling around with ideas for the Dwarven Challenge. It's of limited usefulness, due to high parts usage (~84 to complete a one-row circle), and fairly fixed dimensions of the wall -- about 4.5 inches in diameter all the way around. But the look is kinda neat -- with tan and dark tan it might look like thatching. You can offset pieces across rows to build up more than one row. In spite of the non-standard connections, it's pretty solid. Quote
Kai NRG Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Whew, that's quite a technique! Really like it's looks so far. I don't think I could manage even as much as you have, but I will try it out one I get back to my bricks! Quote
gedren_y Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 (edited) I would have to get more of the 1 width hinge plates to do this, but it would make a great bridge. Or maybe I wouldn't. Looking at the way it's constructed, there's a way one could use tiles to create a handrail. Edited October 18, 2014 by gedren_y Quote
SkaForHire Posted October 19, 2014 Author Posted October 19, 2014 A couple things: 1) All those who are building for our Kaliphlin prelude, we can go ahead and knock back the due date to the 1st of the year because Challenge III will be lasting that long, there is no need to rush it. However, if you finish sooner that is great too! 2)I will be away for the next two weeks starting Wednesday, so I will be late to respond to anyone who asks questions or sends me a message. Quote

That's good to hear! I may actually get to incorporate my new idea/project for it then! Speaking of which, I'll be sending you something in the near future via PM for a rather new "land-claim". I do plan to come into 2015 with quite a "BANG" since I do want to impress you guys but I over thought things before and bit off more than I could chew. As for you going away for a bit, that's completely fine just take the time you need and enjoy life. Quote
cookiesdad Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 (edited) Hello Everyone, I'm a looooong time lurker who finally got a little time to build. After much reading, I think Kaliphlin is the guild for me. My first moc is one that I'm currently building for the Colossal Castle Contest (I don't want to count the Bricklink orders I've gone though). I've seen many people reference "GoH-izing" builds from other purposes. May I do the same with this one? If so, may I claim a random spot in Whispering Wood (my brick palate is completely grey, but all of my mini-figs are crusader lions an I own all of 1 green flag for Avalonia)? I'll eventually seek village qualification for it (I think this build will have all the required points except the food production). Also, from a thematic perspective, the moc is a mage school. I've seen may people reference magic in GoH as something rare. Will something like a mage school for the four lands fit in this place? Edited October 21, 2014 by cookiesdad Quote
robuko Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Welcome cookiesdad! You are very welcome to chose anywhere you like. There are plenty of mages in GoH, so a mage school makes sense. I would suggest to locate it in Petraea, where it could be a school within our world famous university, but anywhere is fine really. The guild theme set up between GoH and LCC is extremely close, so it's very easy to use a build in both. You are welcome to use a CCC build here for a free build, but I think it would not be allowed for a competition build within GoH. The colour palette and minifigs are not really an issue, especially within Kaliphlin, you can use what you feel comfortable with. Quote
SkaForHire Posted October 21, 2014 Author Posted October 21, 2014 Welcome cookiesdad. There are apparently a few mage schools. There is a pretty good one in Eastgate (Which I am actually building for a battle right now), and I thought someone said we were putting one in Petraea. A third one can't hurt, how the heck would we have a tri-wizard tournament without a third school anyway? lol. Quote
NiceMarmot Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Welcome cookiesdad! You have excellent judgement, as exemplified by your choice of guild. Your post all sounds pretty good to me. Pretty much any unclaimed area is OK, and as for the towns with people building in them already, if you ask nicely, you'd probably be welcome there too. We're not nearly as territorial as those tree huggers in Avalonia; their green tights get them all riled up... (By the way, I think those are the "Wither Woods" north of Eastgate, although you'd be welcome to put a Whispering Woods somewhere else...) Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 (edited) I built something in Ruadh! Edited October 21, 2014 by Lord Vladivus Quote

(By the way, I think those are the "Wither Woods" north of Eastgate, although you'd be welcome to put a Whispering Woods somewhere else...) Woops. I meant Wither Woods. Guess I've been reading too much GoT. NiceMarmot and Robuko, My build style is probably closer to Avalonian (but I can't abandon my crusader lions), so a place on the border is appropriate. The architecture doesn't quite fit in most of the towns, especially Petraea, and the build itself is designed to be a self sufficient structure (gatehouse, walls, turrets, keep, mage tower, stables, hatchery, hint of moat, etc.). Kayne Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Welcome cookiesdad! Glad to have you on board here! We have so many varying climates here in Kali that any build style will do. I have far more bley than tan so I do a lot of bley building myself. A couple things: 1) All those who are building for our Kaliphlin prelude, we can go ahead and knock back the due date to the 1st of the year because Challenge III will be lasting that long, there is no need to rush it. However, if you finish sooner that is great too! I was thinking that, so I slowed down on mine a bit! I have it about 50% done, but moved it off to the side for the next month or so as I do some Challenge 3 builds. Quote
SarahJoy Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Welcome to the best guild, cookiesdad! Education is highly prized in Kaliphlin; your mage school will be a great fit. Quote
