Are...you...ready....to rumble?! And do some hoisting

Does that mean something like a crane? (The speculation has begun) :sweet:

Well, one question will be does it have to have string and a hook? Because the definition of a crane is a peice of equipment that lifts, transports, and lowers its load.

I wanted to get everyone's opinion on WIP topics, especially for contests. Personally i do not like the idea, because when you share a super idea to something, then it is no longer unique to your build, because you know someone is going to take it and try and make it better (engineering at its best). So I think it is better to just share the finished product so that the other members can not necessarily see the mechanics of the crane in this case.

Just my opinion though, but i want to see what you think :classic:

I think that one of the big goals for competitions is to inspire builders to better themselves and learn from each other. WIP topics allow that to happen. So I think they are a good thing.

For one, I think that "someone going to take an idea and try to make it better" is key to this community.

Why hide how you did things? That seems counter-productive to me.

While I absolutely agree you have a point, for me it's a trade-off between 100% fair competition, and having 8 more weeks of fun, instead of a single day. When we don't allow WIP topics, the contest is fun for a day or two (from EB's and spectators perspective). And in the end of the day, contests are all about having fun. So I hear you, and I appreciate your comment, but it's not likely that this will change in future contests.

Maybe the earliest date to post a WIP topic could be postponed until four weeks after the start. This also avoids useless topics to be created right at the beginning.

This is my earlier reply. The purpose of the contest is to have fun and to have a vibrant community. Seeing WIP topics is part of the fun. Maybe there's an advantage, maybe not.

I wanted to say that but my English failed.

It might be fun not knowing what everybody else is doing. Also you don't get into the someone already picked that idea and you have to come up with something else or not bother entering. Or someone copy my idea.

On the other hand, contest WIP generates a lot of discussion on this forum.

Maybe no WIP until a week or so after the contest start to give everyone a chance to read and sort out the rules. The WIP has to show something substantial and be more than just a post saying I'm going to build this.

This seems like a nice addition to the rules. A WIP topic is allowed after two weeks. And agreed on the content of the WIP. It should not be used to "reserve an idea"

Milan, how about updating the rules with these two rules?
