2maxwell Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I have to side with Deathleech with regards to Castle vs. LotR. I love Castle and hope for many more waves in the near future, but the truth is that once the 3rd Hobbit movie gets released, that's basically the end, not just from hype but also the licenses and everything else. Just look at Harry Potter for example. In the 1 or 2 years we have left, I'd like to see as many LotR/Hobbit sets as possible, even if that means a few less Castle sets. Quote
Lordofdragonss Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 For the new minifigures line I think it's time we get a... Let's call it Troll Warrior. It would have the same aesthetic and colors like the Orc/Trolls from Fantasy Era. How about two headed ogre? Or even better- The big troll face designed to fit on minifigure body! So much posibilities! Quote

Castle is my favorite theme and I really don't care for licensed minifigs - but even I enjoy the LOTR/Hobbit sets far more than the current Castle line, due to their (subjective) higher quality in terms of variety, build, parts and colouring. jonwil Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 As of now, the only known castle-type set for 2014 is the 2013-castle-crown-faction themed LEGO Movie set 70806 Castle Cavalry. Quote
Henchman24 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I would really like to see a renaissance theme, swords and catapults, with muskets and cannons. still have castles, but they would be armed with cannons, or be more like palaces. And a medieval oriental series would be awesome as well. Quote
Rogue Angel Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 At my point in collecting, I value minifigs over set builds unless the set really stands out (Helm's Deep, Unexpected Gathering, MMV) so LotR/Hobbit has been a windfall with new shields, torsos, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, and finally proper Orcs and Goblins. In a standard castle line, I can expect two, maybe three factions, and that's every two years at most. (and CMF lines have been a huge boost to castle factions as well). LotR/Hobbit have boosted my castle factions by about 50% so any new Hobbit/LotR waves would be preferable to new castle waves IMO - if that were somehow the choice, which I doubt it is. Quote
Vader X Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I recall the Kingdoms line selling very well except for the king's carriage set (old horse curse?). It took a lot of effort for me to get all these at 30% off on sales. Lego shop at home did not even have a clearance on these sets before they went EOL that I recall. Then new castle line up you can easily get at 40% off and it's not even been out one year yet. I love the new castle figs though. The sets them selves are very bland compared to LOTR / Hobbit sets Quote
just2good Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 (edited) This is interesting...I found this on Asger Johansen's Linkedin page- that's where Castle 2013 was first (indirectly) mentioned. He usually works as a concept developer at TLG. A new take on the LEGO Castle line, now with a twist of fairy tales. It was in his past projects though, but this wasn't here last year. Will we see the Castle line have a fairy tale subtheme in Summer 2014? Edited December 7, 2013 by just2good Quote

You need to stop with all this news, it's all just2good to handle! Puns aside I'll take this with a pinch of salt. But I would love if Castle 2014 (or whatever castle genre/spin-off) can include trolls and witches and fairies and whatever strange creatures TLG can come up with. I'll look forward to the summer catalog even more now, agh the excitement! Quote

Infernum Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Fairy tales? Could this fantasy based theme be LoTR's replacement? Quote

Ardelon Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I'm a bit skeptical - first of all, it's mentioned under Past Projects, and second, this description is so vague it could refer to many Castle themes. It could for example mean the current one, which has plenty of fairy tale elements: a wizard, a dragon and a princess needing to be rescued... Quote
AmperZand Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 How about two headed ogre? Do you mean something like this...? Quote
Clone OPatra Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I'm a bit skeptical - first of all, it's mentioned under Past Projects, and second, this description is so vague it could refer to many Castle themes. It could for example mean the current one, which has plenty of fairy tale elements: a wizard, a dragon and a princess needing to be rescued... I was skeptical in the same way when I read that, but then again those elements can hardly be called a 'new twist' since they were all present in the Fantasy Era Castle line. That would only be new in relation to Kingdoms, but Kingdoms also had princesses in need of rescuing and wizards. This could hint at an actually new twist. Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 That pun made me cry. Me too. -Sci I don't know what to think of that... And Ardelon brings up a good point, I mean the castle theme is already so heavily into fairy tales, and what if he is just referencing the Disney Princes's theme? I'll just hope for the best and that we do get a Castle theme next year with those elements. Quote
Faefrost Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Am I the only one praying that TLG hasn't decided to license Shrek as a new Castle theme? Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Well wasn't Shrek 4 the last of the franchise? I doubt they'd get a license based on a franchise that's done with. The only reason that we still get sets for Star Wars is because it always has something new to bring to the table and was started in 1999, when the Phantom Menace first came out, so I doubt they'd have any reason to give us a Shrek line. Also, it was sort of implied that the new theme would have a fairy tale twist, you can't put a twist on a license that already exists, right? Quote

But so is Disney's Once Upon a Time. (Now wouldn't that be an interesting spin?) We may also be reading way too much into that one sentence. Chances are that non compete clauses bundled into the Disney Princess stuff would preclude TLG from going to far down their own non Disney Fairy Tale path at the moment. Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 You bring up a good point FaeFrost, we all know how protective Disney was with Potc, and why we haven't seen a real pirates set in a while. Quote

While this sounds interesting, I'm not going to get my hopes up too soon... could he perhaps simply be referencing the Disney Princess line? Yeah, 'Hive', I think you nailed it. This is most likely what he meant. I don't see them doing a fairytale twist with Castle now that the Princess line is out. The Princess line is a lot like Castle the more I think of it. And, it was in past projects. Oh well. Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Thanks for that just2good! Now this new theme, if it is referencing Dinsey Princess's 2014, then what is to be said of Castle 2014? Or did Disney put the red light on a Lego project for one of their own? That'd be 3 times since I came out of my dark ages, 1st time being classic pirates for Potc, 2nd time being the Cuusoo project for Lone Ranger, and I'd hate for Disney to block yet another "evergreen" theme for a one-off of their own. Quote
TheLazyChicken Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I hope that castle returns in 2014. I really also hope that we get trolls, monsters and skeletons like the fantasy era line. That line was the one that got me out of my dark ages. For right now I am not sure about it, but if it is true, it would be like a dream come to reality. Quote
