Dukesc Posted May 26, 2011 Author Posted May 26, 2011 I revamped the spacing between the cannons, so there are now 6 studs instead of 4 between each one. This will reduce my cannon count on the lower deck from 16 to 12, but there will be more room for the crew, thus giving it a higher rate of fire. I was also originally thinking I'd use smaller cannons, but they can go on the smaller hulled ships and on the top decks. Duke Quote
Capn Frank Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 For better yard arm spacing I would attempt to create sails like Admiral Croissant did with his Vesta I am going to attempt to create "similar" sails with my BSB MOD that is complete minus the sails. Quote
Dukesc Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 I have been making some changes to my ship, to include making it a 2 masted Brig instead of a 3 masted Sloop. After one more Bricklink order my ship should be about ready. I still have to finish the interior of the captain's cabin, since it hasn't changed in 3 years. I am going to make the steering wheel function with ropes and pulleys. I also have to make the Kitchen, finish the rigging, make the sails and do some touch ups here and there. The capstan does function and can be used for either anchor. I have to order a longer technic piece, so I don't have to use the round 2x2 bricks to hold it together. This is one of the many ships I drew inspiration from when doing the rigging. It’s not stable yet without the strings, but this is just to give you an idea of what the masts will look like. Quote
Darth Yogi Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I like the new shaping much better, although I think 3 masts would look better IMO. I really like the windows on the stern. Great job so far Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 It's a good improvement compared to your previous version. Are you going for historical accuracy? In that case I think the stern could use a bit of work for example. Outside of that I think it's already quite accurate. It's a nice ship and right now the only advice I can give is to add more brown to it. Right now almost everything on the deck is black and on the picture the capstan (for example) is hardly visible. Good luck! Quote
Aalak Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 It's really a nice process from the BSB-Look-a-like in '07 until now. The colorsheme is nice, maybe a bit to much black on the deck, but if you gonna unse brown tiles for the planking, it would look even better. I like the yellow railing! As for the masts, I think the upper parts, topmast and topgalant are to thick. I would use other bricks. the smaller 1x2 round bricks or different kind of technic - pin connectors. (Examples can be seen on Perfectionist's Achille, the Vesta of Admiral Croissant or my ships, too)On the other hand, they seem to be a bit to large, compared to the inspirational picture. A way to improve the plattforms could be to make them with the SNOT-technic, as you can see on the Achille, too. The upper part of the catspan looks a bit large, but I guess it's gonna be manned by to man for each of the levers. you could add something to store the levers, if they are not used. Keep it up, she'll end up a beauty! Quote

Great job so far Thanks Darth. I am making it two masted, because I really like the ship in the picture and it is very close to the same width and length of the inspirational ship I showed in my previous update. Hopefully you’ll like it more with the rigging. It's a good improvement compared to your previous version. Are you going for historical accuracy? Good luck! Thanks Admiral. I am making it mostly historically correct, however the stern is going to stay mostly as is, since it is my favorite part of the ship. I may decorate it and make minor changes though. I am going to be buying new planking for the decks. They certainly won’t be black and it should make the ship pop a little bit more. Keep it up, she'll end up a beauty! Thanks Alak. You were correct about the masts needing to get smaller as they go up. I hope you like the changes. The capstan is now smaller and I added barrels to store the levers. I made the capstan smaller by about 3 studs in diameter. Here is how I made the rear mast come in at a 7 degree angle. I added two small carronades as stern chasers. I changed the water line, so that it is more gradual and not mostly flat. I also added one mid section so that it would be a 18 gun brig. I started on the rigging. This is quite a long process and many of the times I needed a second set of hands from my wife, as seen in the first picture. Here is what she looks like currently. I wasn’t able to work on much of the front rigging, because I was short by one piece. It happens to be a 2x6 plate with stud holes in it. Grrr It is needed to mount the front mast correctly. In the picture it isn’t nearly as solid as the rear mast. Quote
Admiral Croissant Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Great work on the rigging! It looks very realistic with that rope colour and all those pulleys The masts seem to be a little bit too tall to me. It also has its charm, but perhaps in this case 4 sails for each mast, or shorter masts would look better. And to be honest it doesn't bother me that much as the overall image looks very nice. I also think your stern chasers could be made larger. They look a bit gnome-like compared to the ship's wheel. And if you would really want to place carronades there, I would make the gun barrel shorter (although perhaps it's short already..I can't see it well on the pictures). Anyway, keep up the great work! I can't wait to see this finished and with brown decks Quote
spideryear Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 that rigging is very pretty  i like the stern aswell Quote
