Jim Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Well, thanks for your informations ! As it will be my first mindstorm set I'm going to wait until the release of the 'public' version ! Indeed, since it's your first set, you should probably wait for the retail version. It has lots of goodies like white panels, nice stickers and the IR beacon. And it has some nice models! The Educational version does have a nice storage container though Quote
Someonenamedjon Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 (edited) NXT can be controlled via BT but it is problematic to control directly via iOS. You need to use some sort of proxy on a pc or something. BT on EV3 is compatible with BT on iOS, so it can be controlled directly. Haven't tried it though. It's on my todo list, with looooots of other stuff I need to test Apart from the software license, the education version is great value for money! Lots of sensors and the rechargeable battery is very expensive if bought separately. Eh, you would need to manually balance the robot if you did that, as the remote does not do that for you. Or you could use a modified program with the ir beam. Edited August 23, 2013 by Someonenamedjon Quote

You could have a program which automatically balances, but you can give directions (turn left, move forward) with your iPhone. Kind of hybrid control. Of course you could make a program that uses iPhone input to manually balance the robot, but the Bluetooth connection won't be fast enough to give you accurate control. Quote
Cwetqo Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Contents of box (plus instructions and software DVD). I was really glad to see those five 36T double bevel gears. Quote
MinusZwei Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Just FYI, the german supermarket "Mueller" has some retail boxes already available in their shops (at least the one near my workplace in Karlsruhe). Got one and now can't wait to get back home :P Quote
Jim Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Contents of box (plus instructions and software DVD). Looks nice! Although I can't help myself thinking that the educational version has way better parts, except for the decorative panels and stickers. Too bad the license for the software is a bit of a let down. I was really glad to see those five 36T double bevel gears. I need to get better acquainted with those gears, since I rarely use them. Just FYI, the german supermarket "Mueller" has some retail boxes already available in their shops (at least the one near my workplace in Karlsruhe). MinusZwei Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 So it's finally happening, great!! Yep. I was about to order the education kit when I saw you needed to add 100 euros more for the software. Quote
Jim Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) Yep. I was about to order the education kit when I saw you needed to add 100 euros more for the software. Looking forward to some of your pictures or videos. Which model are you planning on building first? Too bad the educational version needs another 100 bucks to get you going. Otherwise it would be a no-brainer. Edited August 26, 2013 by Ted Quote
MinusZwei Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) Looking forward to some of your pictures or videos. Which model are you planning on building first? As I am experienced with embedded Linux, I will first hack the base brick a bit. I have already downloaded the source code from github, so I think the first play will be with the electronics :P Afterwards, I will see... I think I will build all of them to get used to the "design patterns". Too bad the educational version needs another 100 bucks to get you going. Otherwise it would be a no-brainer. I think the base bricks must be compatible. So once you have a 31313 kit, you can "just" buy the education core set and use the retail software with it, no? You might miss the additional features of the education software (I think you can't do data logging with the 31313) but you could use the additional sensors... I think I will build all of them to get used to the "design patterns". Great! So you probably own one of these: http://www.mindsenso..._position=39:39 I wonder what "you Linux guys" will come up with I think the base bricks must be compatible. So once you have a 31313 kit, you can "just" buy the education core set and use the retail software with it, no? You might miss the additional features of the education software (I think you can't do data logging with the 31313) but you could use the additional sensors... The bricks are the same! There's difference between firmware versions 1.3R (if I am not mistaken for retail) and 1.3E (for educational). The retail software will eventually also support the other sensors. So when you buy the educational software in a few months you will be able to use it without the expensive license. No data logging, but who cares. And of course you can download 3rd pary firmware like RobotC in a few months. Edited August 26, 2013 by Ted Quote
Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 If you want to stay tuned with the latest EV3 hacks and updates, you might considering this Facbook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/legomindstorms/?fref=ts For example: follow John Hansen in the development of the BricxCC software, see what other builders make & much more! Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 You're welcome, didn't think of posting it earlier since I was already a member since January 7th. Quote
Jim Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I just applied for membership Great to have a place where lot of the technical aspects are discussed. So thanks again. I am currently working on a Mindstorms Index for this site and I will make sure to include it in the list Quote
Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) I can't approve it, but I'm sure that it will be approved within 24hours, it's a very active community with all the MCP's (including me). So you can basically ask everything (hardware, software,..) and a lot of experts will jump onto your questions :) The index is a very good idea too. BTW: you can read some basics thought on my website too: LINK (this page is still under construction ;) ) Edited August 26, 2013 by Ramacco Quote

Just sent him a proposal. I have read your EV3 review last week when I was searching the web again for some EV3 stuff hehe. Nice! Love your Wall-E by the way. Currently working on Wall-EV3.....no further explanation needed I guess I have been looking at Bazmarcs creation for quite some time. Would love to see them in real life. Any chance to see them at http://www.legoworld.nl/ Edited August 26, 2013 by Ted Quote
Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) Cool! Didn't know that google would suggest my website, as there are plenty of others that have better info than mine -- mainly because I'm also busy with school etc.. The Wall-E on my website is a remake (and more reliable) version of zWall-E made by my friend Marc-Adré Bazergui. I would love to see your Wall-EV3!! I can show you this interpretation of a Wall-EV3 also made by Marc-André. Edited August 26, 2013 by Ramacco Quote
Jim Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 He beat me to it....Noooooooooooooooooo!!! Guess it was to obvious. My version will have Unimog wheel instead of treads, so it's more made for speed. No sure how I got on your website though. Probably via some images on Google or something. Quote
Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I think he started on het Wall-EV3 before you even had your EV3 (as I've been following this topic). Can't wait to see more MOCs with the EV3! Quote

No doubt about that. I was triggered by the Wall-E recently posted by Denny: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=85522 So I though about making a Wall-EV3 with two EV3 units. Since I only have one at the moment, the arms will be fixed. I am not using treads so it won't be a real Wall-EV3, but more like a cousin Quote
Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Very nice Wall-E!! Can't wait to see Wall-E's cousin Quote

Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) LEGO has been uploading some new videos of the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3. I have made a little playlist for you. So sit back and enjoy the show! Edited August 26, 2013 by Ramacco Quote
rm8 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Is it possible to order new red rubber attachments for tracks at LEGO Customer service? Who knows? Quote
