Ramacco Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 @rm8: you can get those here. It's 0.67 dollar per piece. Quote
Jim Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) What do you mean? What are the restrictions? Not really restrictions, more like differences between the retail and educational version. Education Pros More sensors (2xTouch,1xUltrasonic,1xGyro,1xColor) Rechargeable battery (which is very useful, yet very expensive) Nice storage bin with inlay tray Black treads Cons Official software license is around 100 bucks Retail Pros More panels and stickers which make the robots look cooler Cooler robots with more playability Software is included, although it only supports the sensors in the retail version (update for other sensors will follow later on) Cons No real variety in the parts Software restricted to retail sensors (for the time being) If it weren't for the software license the educational version would be a better deal, plain and simple. On the other the hand, the software won't matter if you use other firmware or if you wait for the retail version to support all sensors. LEGO has been uploading some new videos of the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3. I have made a little playlist for you. So sit back and enjoy the show! Thanks! Will take a look tonight @rm8: you can get those here. It's 0.67 dollar per piece. Not a bargain. MinusZwei Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Ok. I quickly checked my retail kit: - software not included (i.e. no CD/DVD provided). Guess I will have to wait until it is downloadable from LEGO website :P - IR remote control is compatible with Power Function: you can control the brick using the normal PF remote instead of the EV3 Quote

Seriously?! That's ridiculous! The IR remote is probably exactly the same unit as the PF control, besides the form factor and IR beacon functionality. But that's cool! Quote
MinusZwei Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Ridiculous? Not that much I think. Who cares about a DVD with version 1.0 once some updates are out? LEGO will ship everything using ESD I guess on Sept. 1st. Quote
MinusZwei Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 You could pirate the software... I could... but first I would have to find someone who have it, and secondly since I work in the software business, I tend to pirate a little less than in my student days :) More seriously, I am definitely waiting to get this nice tool: http://www.mindsensors.com/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=189&MMN_position=39:39 The intelligent brick is running exactly like a "standard" ARM SoC evaluation board: - the uboot bootloader loads the kernel from a specific address on the NAND flash to the RAM - the kernel boots afterwards... - ...loading a cramfs image containing the root filesystem. I am sure that we will see in a couple of days/weeks alternate kernels/rootfs. Quote

I was thinking about it yesterday evening and the need to provide software or drivers on a DVD is so 2012 TLG will probably release the software and the apps on the same date, around Sept 1st indeed. It didnt work when I tried, so I guees I will have try again. I have software, but is not final retail dvd. It should be available for dl after september 1st. Quote
Jim Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 For the Dutch members (Marcel1980): http://www.speelgoedzeist.nl/lego-45544-education-mindstorms-ev3-basis-set 315 euros for the EV3 Educational version!! Very cheap!! Quote

Jim Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) I would love to see your Wall-EV3!! I can show you this interpretation of a Wall-EV3 also made by Marc-André. Here's a very preliminary preview of my Wall-EV3 interpretation. Since I am not a big fan of treads in the way they perform, I dicided to make version with Unimog wheels and Rotocasters. It still needs a lot of work and possible rework, but you get the idea. I will probably make it four studs wider and lower the wheels a bit to increase the ride height. Ramacco Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Wow! That looks very great so far! Have you considered using the same tracks as Jorge? They look very capable and they are not as slippery as the tracks that come with the bulldozer. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=5617949 I see that you have a great amount of red and white!! That goes very well with the EV3! Quote

That goes very well with the EV3! I definitely considered Jorges tracks as soon as I saw them!! I am thinking of doing kind of a modular build eventually, where I can choose wheels or tracks which type of drive train/propulsion method (what's the Enligsh word for type of wheels or tracks?) I want to implement. But somehow I got caught up in the idea of using the Unimog wheels for an agile version of Wall-EV3. I will also try the new Rubber Track elements to see how they operate. In the past I have used my own rubber thingies, but they resulted in a very bumpy ride. As soons as I was aware of the new color scheme, I have been ordering white parts (especially panels and liftarms) And having a 42000 does help a bit! Although I am thinking of placing an order at S&H for white 3x5 Liftarms. They are pretty expensive on Bricklink. http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=32526 This afternoon I will pickup my Wifi dongle to see how that works. I bought a very small Netgear Dongle, but sadly, it was not compatible. Now I have the preferred one. Too bad it's sticking out like a sore thumb though Edited August 27, 2013 by Ted Quote
Ramacco Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) The modular design idea is very cool and makes it easy for competing in competitions were functionality (by using wheels) and to give demos were aesthetics is more important (by using tracks). I have a bunch of with parts myself and have a lot of those white 5x11 panels. However I don't own the curved panels in white, and that's a bummer. The 3x5 are indeed very expensive. I've 50 of those myself (or maybe even 100, not sure about that ;) ) P.S. Don't know the word either, since I'm from Belgium ;) EDIT: I don't own such a wifi dongle yet. Should buy one online soon :) Edited August 27, 2013 by Ramacco Quote

Edit: They are...kind of. They just didn't appear in Technic sets. http://www.bricklink...gItem.asp?P=g21 Edited August 27, 2013 by Ted Quote

Ramacco Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) I have found bigger ones that come in red! http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=744 Problem is that you'll need 300+ rubber per track.. :( Edited August 27, 2013 by Ramacco Quote
Jim Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 That is indeed a lot. I think I'd better stick to the Unimog wheels or black/grey treads Quote

Jim Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Yesterday I have tried the Netgear Wifi Dongle and it works like a charm. So much easier to program your robot. I do wish the smaller ones will be supported in the future. But for now I am happy this one works. Quote
Ramacco Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Yesterday I have tried the Netgear Wifi Dongle and it works like a charm. So much easier to program your robot You will only be using it for uploading programs to your p-brick? I could think of much more applications than that.. However, we'll have to wait until LeJOS (what I use) or ROBOTC (what you use) is fully supported, to start writing advanced code. Can't wait for that! I'm eager to learn more JAVA. I'm a student and I only started learning programming myself 2 years ago. (first NXT_G, than NXC, now bought a MacBook and switching to JAVA and will stick to that). Quote
Jim Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Uploading the program is one of the benefits. Indeed the real fun starts with RobotC or LeJos, where you can do a lot more with Wifi. I am closely watching Bricxcc as well. I have some Domotica at home, so I can make my robot turn on the lights when it's dark or something. Can't wait either. It won't take long for the first real releases will popup Quote
Ramacco Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 I'm also stil following BricxCC, as I enjoyed using NXC a lot! I'm also sure that it's just a matter of time before the alternative programming environments will be launched. LeJOS is already compatible with the EV3 and working very well! However, not easy to install on your own EV3 at the moment Quote
