hmm, maybe try to find a fellow helpful EB member living in the US trying to get the batteries for you, and then mail them.

(pretty strange that lego doesn't sell those education sets in europe, and make such a big deal about it)

They sell the sets via official distributor - but according to the support lady - the sets with battery-to-be-replaced were manufactured for U.S. market. But still I fill kind of cheated.

I started a discussion here -> http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=89246 to get the opinions of those who do not care to look into Mindstorms General Discussion.

There has been some discussion of late regarding missing batteries form the USA sets, not sure you will be effected though, and as its your sis she can always collect at a later date and post it over.

Wow, peter_m, what that customer service lady said to you is disturbing... Kind of odd for a TLG employee to say something like that. :sceptic:

That's just unacceptable for a company with such a good rep.

I am new to this forum and have a question about EV3 vs. previous version Mindstorms sets from an educational perspective. Is there any programming required in order for a robot to move via the remote control features (included remote, iOS devices, android devices, etc.)? I would really hate for kids to not have to learn some programming in order to make their robots do things ...

No, in case of set 31313 - EV3 Home Edition you do not have to do any programming in order to control robots built from official instruction. There are applications for iOS and android that have predefined functionality - so you just turn it on and have fun.

But in a modern world it is good to know at least basics of programming ;) - and EV3 offers a painless start.

I actually have a question about the EV3 programming. I bought the education set. Is there any way I can use something like Java to program the brick, or am I stuck with the snap-blocks?

I'd like to try and get some more advanced programs running (especially as I'm not the best builder yet). At first glance it doesn't seem like it'd be easy to do stuff like mapping out the layout of rooms.

Hi,

There are several ways to program the bricks, using Java or RobotC or something. However, none of these tools have reached beyond the beta-stage. So there are ways, but you need to accept it's still buggy.

If you are interested in this, you can take a look at the Mindboards Forum.

I found a lot of similar stuff for NXT, just nothing for the new brick yet. Guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it!

If you are not into pioneering, I think it's best to wait a bit.

Great news: there is new firmware coming that should solve the BlueTooth problems on Android!

I just got a call from Lego Consumer Service in the UK. This morning, I emailed them back to let them know how my issue with the BlueTooth connection problems on Android had developed to a stand still, with none of the second tier support teams willing to accept the case or follow up (I'll leave out the details).

The Consumer Service rep said they were aware of these connection problems, they had had reports of several other people experiencing the same thing. He confirmed that it was an issue that only occurs with the retail version of the brick. The educational version is built on exactly the same hardware, but has a slightly different firmware and does not have any problems connecting with Android apps over BlueTooth. So my problem is identified, confirmed, and they are working on a solution now.

No time table for release yet. The new firmware might be released as soon as the end of this week, but it could also take a couple of weeks. I can wait for that!

The whole experience so far was becoming very "un-Lego"-like for me. I know I should not let minor things like this creep up on you, but to be honest, I was somewhat disappointed and it took part of the fun out. So I am very glad they called me. The whole thing has switched back to the positive side again!

Hello SanderBontje do have resolved the problem with the Android already? I have firmware 1.03H. Is this the firmware version in which the problem should have been solved? Anyone with a Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Tab2 with a retail version of EV3 with a good Android experience?

Hi, we build the El3ctric_guitar.ev3 but I cannot figure out the program good enough. The problem is that only 5 notes can be played. The last 1/3 of the neck plays the same tone.

I got the screen print out that IR-module measures nicely 0-26 (also inside of the program).

I think that I found one error in the program. Before the 'Range'-funciton there is upper&lower definations

'5*a-1' & '5*(a+1)' I would assume that formulas should be '5*(a-1)' & '5*(a+1)'

Despite the formulas the problem stays.

Where the actual note's pointer for the Notes table is defined?

EV3 Retail for 350 USD!

http://www.frys.com/...586626#detailed

It's the same price as the Lego Store ... plus, you get VIP points from Lego.

From my experience, Lego at Frys tends to be a bit overpriced ... and in large cities (e.g. Chicago), where there are 3 lego stores and 2 Fry's .... Fry's lego selection has shrunk down considerably lately, as most people (it seems) prefer to get their toys directly from the 3 lego stores.

Not at all ... it may be an option in other cities where there is no lego store... Lego stores in the US are NOT very common.

In The Netherlands it's about 350 euro, so I figured 350 USD (about 250 EUR) was a pretty good deal. But once again we got screwed with the 1:1 USD to EUR conversion

350 Euros is VERY steep ... Makes you wonder what type of cost structure TLG uses to set different prices in the various markets.

I must note though that, with a sales tax of about 10%, the price in Chicago comes to about $385. If I lived in a state where TLG has no store/presence (eg Nebraska) I would only pay 350 if I buy directly from TLG, as they offer free shipping.
