LegoSjaak Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 (edited) Hello EB-members, i always only put original sets together, mostly City and Creator. I admire people who create their own Modular-like buildings... I do not have those building skills (yet) but with expanding the 10224 Town Hall by 2 x 12 studs i learned a bit about the way these buildings are made.. It was so much fun and i'm really proud of the result.. I know, it might not be too special for others, but for me it was the first step to more MOD's and hopefully, MOC's....!!! The building is made out of 2 sets, and is widened by 12 studs on both sides..so total wodth is 56 studs now! The building is also taller due to the longer and higher tiled roof on the 2 x 3 pillars. I created some extra rooms in the building and also the tower is a lot taller. I started with the first floor, and worked up. The extra pillars were the most difficult to integrate. You can find more pictures on my Flickr site. Greetz, LegoSjaak! Edited October 7, 2013 by LegoSjaak Quote
eurotrash Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 That's an impressively large Town Hall for sure! I think it works well with two sets combined and good job with the pillars. Have you made any changes the interior?, and, I guess you've got two Mayors running things now - that isn't going to end well Thanks for sharing it with us! Quote
Trevor_F Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Despite already being the biggest modular building, it somehow looks natural being even bigger. Nice work! This could definitely be the center of any town setting. I guess I'll be doing my first mod soon, though certainly smaller scale than yours. I plan to make some adjustments to the Haunted House to take it from "run down haunted house" to "old downtown home." Quote
Off the wall Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Nice job. For us in the USA, the expansion of the town hall also serves as a metaphor. :-) Quote
LegoSjaak Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Nice job. For us in the USA, the expansion of the town hall also serves as a metaphor. :-) This was done just in time, just before the Great Government ShutDown... That's an impressively large Town Hall for sure! I think it works well with two sets combined and good job with the pillars. Have you made any changes the interior?, and, I guess you've got two Mayors running things now - that isn't going to end well Thanks for sharing it with us! I think i had luck with the pillars... somehow they immediately fitted in place.. there are no larges gaps or so, it really works well!! One of the both majors is getting married...so his hands will be tight by his new wife... Despite already being the biggest modular building, it somehow looks natural being even bigger. Nice work! This could definitely be the center of any town setting. I guess I'll be doing my first mod soon, though certainly smaller scale than yours. I plan to make some adjustments to the Haunted House to take it from "run down haunted house" to "old downtown home." I did not yet place it in between other buildings, but i think that because of the bigger difference in size, it is no longer disturbing... Now that it is wider, it is just a tall building! The haunted house would be a very nice set as well to MOD... i've seen some nice pictures of people who already MODded one... ! Hope you can show us pictures soon!! Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 AWESOME modification 'LS', did your city have to shut down too ? Now this is what we call a town hall......Brick On 'LS' ! Quote
Kristel Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 The extended town hall looks fantastic! Modding the TLG modulars and Creator houses is a great way to start building your own modulars. Quote
streifen Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Wow! really monstrous! The grandeur of the MOC really suits the town hall! Quote
Trevor_F Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Wow, so many people from all over the world know of our government shutdown, lol. It had already been going on for a full day before I even knew it, and I've lived in America all my life. Life continues as usual. No zombie rampages or massive pandemonium yet... However, as the enlargement of government has now taken over LEGO city, with its XL Town Halls, I may not be able to ignore it any longer. Quote
kermit Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Nice job on your extension. The building looks more like a hospital being that wide. The tower on top is a little too long though. You should leave it at the original height. Quote
LegoSjaak Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Nice job on your extension. The building looks more like a hospital being that wide. The tower on top is a little too long though. You should leave it at the original height. Kermit, i think you are right with the tower... i should lower it a bit, but the backside of the tower has a door now and an arch, so then i have to leave those, when i lower it.. maybe one layer of bricks will already be enough.. i'll figure it out, but when i was ready i saw the same 'out of proportion-view' as you mentioned... Thanks for your remark! Wow! really monstrous! The grandeur of the MOC really suits the town hall! it is pretty big indeed.. It is a pity that you cannot see anything from the inside when it is standing in the layout.... There should be a little spy-cam inside...! The extended town hall looks fantastic! Modding the TLG modulars and Creator houses is a great way to start building your own modulars. Thanks Kristel.. it gave me a lot of inspiration to MOD it.. building something.. tearing it down... building it again.. it just gave me some fun experience in building! AWESOME modification 'LS', did your city have to shut down too ? Now this is what we call a town hall......Brick On 'LS' ! Thank Tiger, i never had a building that is so heavy before.....i think my TownHall was built to serve a bigger town in the future... Wow, so many people from all over the world know of our government shutdown, lol. Well, there was a story told here in Holland about a family that was waiting for some papers, to buy a house.. but as they did not get those papers now, they had to stay in a hotel with their kids... (as long as there is roomservice, that wouldn't be too bad, i guess.. ) Quote
LAKAbricks Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Well, LegoSjaak... I think, you should build the town hall lower. It's way too tall for my screen I think it fits the building very well to make it bigger. With this size and shape, your town hall really deserves to be stand-alone building. If you can, you should consider windows on the sides of building, not just in the front and back. Quote

Thanks Iaka, it is actually a good idea, but there is hardly any space left to have it as a stand alone. I already exchanged the corner cafe with the market place in my layout, and then the Town Hall hopefully fits in the layout. There is a large tube coming out of the floor in my attick, that bends a bit. But if i put the lower piece of the MarketPlace under that tube, and take away the brown half of the Pet Shop, (after taking away the Cafe Corner, and swap it with the original position of the Market Place), the Town Hall should fit in with its 24 studs extra wirth.... Can't wait to try it out... ! Here a picture to show what i mean... here the Town Hall is stil the original size.. This is how the positions of the modulars was before MOD-ding the Town Hall...Greetz, LegoSjaak Quote

You should leave it at the original height. Actually, I would suggest making the tower wider and taller. (Allthough I can see the problems in regards to space... :) ) I think it would look even better, if you expanded it by two bricks to have the same size as that protruding middle part of the structure it self :) Anyways, great build! Tought of that too, of making the tower wider on both sides... but after clicking a row of 1x1 bricks on both sides of the tower, i found out that it was too wide then.. out of proportion..But i definetely see what you are pointing out!! Thanks for the remark anyway!! Greetz, LegoSjaak Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Nice the enhanced version! Amazing work! Quote
LegoSjaak Posted October 11, 2013 Author Posted October 11, 2013 (edited) I just put the Town Hall XL in my layout..now you can see how large it is... Here are some pictures and a YouTube link! Edited October 11, 2013 by LegoSjaak Quote
timmyc1983 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Fantastic MOD of the town hall there, it looks impressive doubled up like that and goes well in your town! Great work and happy building Quote
LAKAbricks Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 It looks rather impressive with the enlarged Town Hall next to the other modulars. I like the different sizes of buildings, it makes the town look more real. Just a shame, you don't have space for town hall to be a stand-alone. I would make it look even greater. Quote
