Ki-Adi-Mundi Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Hello and welcome to the forums! I am probably not alone in recommending set 8038 to you. I's go as far and say that this is among the most acclaimed OT sets TLC has published so far. It has an acceptable piece/price ratio (for an SW set that is) and offers structures, vehicles, famous (and many) minifigs and also some elements that represent nice playing features. IMO it's an excellent toy and collection piece at the same time. It was published in 2009, went out of stock some time ago and another production run was done. That indicates quite some popularity, i guess. If you're more into building, emphasize display purposes and don't mind limited 'toy qualities', 10198 is a good choice. It is fairly huge for a LEGO and quite an iconic OT ship. But the new Falcon, too, is a well done set. It was just released and you might find it on sale before it gets sold out. I ordered it more than a month ago and still await it's arrival hotly. I highly recommend you to have a look into this thread where you can find outstanding reviews. It's helpful to see in advance what you will get. Happy bricking! Quote
Big Cam Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I'd still recommend the new falcon. Don't miss it, some of is have waited years for the chance to buy a falcon set right from TLG, and although expensive, it's cheaper than buying it 2 years from now on the second market. Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 If you're looking for something that's really a good build and the finished product is a great display model, I'd recommend the 10212 Imperial Shuttle, that is if budget is not an issue with you. (I'll let this thread here for a while before merging it to the Gen. Questions thread later...) Quote
K-Nut Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I'd have to say either the new Falcon or the Tantive IV. I don't have the Falcon yet, but it seems like a great set. Or if you want to spend $10USD more, you can get the Tantive. The Falcon is more to scale than the Tantive, but the Tantive has more detailing. But I also agree with Kiel, that the Imperial Shuttle might be a good choice if you're willing to spend that much. Quote
StoutFiles Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 The Death Star is the best build there is by far. If you want something cheaper then the Tantive IV or Falcon are both good choices. Quote
Hollander Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 There are more than just one OT sets that would fit your requirements, but the Tantive IV (nr. 10198) is in my opinion one of the best SW/OT sets TLG ever made. It it very accurate, doesn't contain any stickers, it's a nice model to put on a shelf, and the price/part ratio is very decent. The minifigs are not that special, although the Antilles figure is pretty neat and exclusive for that set. The Imperial shuttle also seems great, even knowing that I don't own it. Then we have the AT-AT (nr. 8129), I don't know if you would like it, but for an OT fan it seems pretty cool to me. Or maybe the midi-scale Star Destroyer (nr. 8099). Nice for putting on the shelf. Kaitan Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I second the Death Star. It's costly, but it's a great set that not only looks amazing when complete, there are loads of "oh wow that's a cool feature I didn't notice" moments when building it :) Kaitan Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I agree with Ki-Adi. I don't think anyone can dispute me if I say 8038 is the best all-around Star Wars set in the $90-$120 price range. Quote

elijah Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I would recommend the Battle of Endor set it is a great set. I brought this set and love it as a model. Quote
prateek Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I'd go with Battle of Endor if you can still find it. It's too good to pass up if you have that kind of money. Quote
StephenC Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 The new Millennium Falcon is about as iconic a vehicle as you can get from the OT. I know it is not the UCS set, but that is nigh on impossible to get for sensible money and I think the new set looks pretty good. It is fun to build, with some clever techniques (such as the panels around the sides) and is nice and solid. The Wampa's cave is a bit naff, but the snow speeder it comes with is pretty good, if you want a cheaper set. If you can wait, there are rumours of a new TIE Fighter, to go with your X-Wing! Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I give my support to Battle of Endor as well. Pick it up now at retail price while you still can, it's bound to soar in price once it's retired. Quote
Professor Jones Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) I got mysterious pieces with my slave 1 and I don't know their purpose. I didn't see them mentioned in the instructions, can you shed some light on them for me ? http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/mysteriouspieces.jpg/ Thanks Edited August 16, 2011 by Professor Jones Quote
Corydoras Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 They are clone trooper accessories - from left to right: a helmet visor, floodlight (for the helmet), a pauldron and a kama (kind of a "skirt", used for leg protection). I guess Boba can use them as well. Quote

Professor Jones Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Thanks everyone for the suggestions. The endor set indeed seems to have a lot going for it, but I'm not a big ewok/endor fan, I'm more into tatooine and aliens stuff ! I hope future releases will address these themes (a new cantina, sandcrawler or jabba related stuff... that would make my day). For now I'm ordering the falcon, plus one c3po and 2 stormies from bricklink to make the set perfect ! Quote

You could buy Lukes Landspeeder to get Threepio and a stormtrooper, plus some extra figures and a classic Tatooine vehicle Quote

You could buy Lukes Landspeeder to get Threepio and a stormtrooper, plus some extra figures and a classic Tatooine vehicle I agree. I'm a big fan of Tatooine-related sets myself, and Luke's Landspeeder is one of my all-time favorites. For just $25, you get an iconic vehicle and several great minifigures. Quote
AmiPolizeiFunk Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I really really want to get the Death Star 10188 as soon as I clear the lump in my throat over the price. How long do you guys think it will be so easy to come by at list price? Quote

I want to say they'll build a Genosis Arena or Cloud City to replace it next year, but no way to know. I'd try to pick one up during any pre-Christmas sales. Quote

Will Amazon do some kind of count-down before "In Stock" becomes "Out of Stock"? Quote
Ki-Adi-Mundi Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Good advice, thanks. Will Amazon do some kind of count-down before "In Stock" becomes "Out of Stock"? Yes, they do. Due to the price of the item - the count won't drop to zero immediately. Still - since you're living in Germany: You could always take a stop at the closest Galeria Kaufhof. They use(d) to have a few Death Stars (1-2) around and you might even order it via them. S@H also does still have it in GER (backorder ATM). Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 From my experience with Amazon, their discounts are pretty random. This set has sold pretty well for them too, so I wouldn't bank on any big discounts. I'd keep an eye on Ebay also. I was able to score my Death Star a few months ago for $370 shipped. Quote
Ceroknight Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 How are the quality of the minifigures in the Starwars watches and clocks? Quote
