TasV Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I don't really look at the models much unless I want to learn how a particular mechanism works (actually... that's why I buy models... not so much for what it is modelling itself), or if I want the parts. The Triple Challenge is a good example... my Son (Aiden) and I know what we want to build for it (time is the biggest challenge), and we went through the prize list and said if we won 1st prize we'd take the Crawler for the RC gear and to learn more about transmissions. If we got 2nd we'd choose the Service Truck for the pneumatic pieces and to learn about crane arms. The hardest choice, for Aiden and I, is actually is for third place. The motor bike is cool and we could use more chain links and another 40 tooth gear but the mini backhoe has the most useful mechanisms we can adapt for our robots... we'd probably end up choosing the motor bike just because it is so cool! Lakop Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I'm a part collector but mostly builder. I've just bought 42011 for the pull back motor and the small wheels for my triple build idea. No matter the set there will always be parts I can use. On display I have my battle droid bought when it came out in the nineties, a bionicle, a lego fireman torch, a knight and a few special minifigs. All sets are quickly dismantled and the parts used for experimenting. If I could afford two of every set and had the space that would be a different matter. H Quote
SheepEater Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I'm ashamed to say I didn't even build 9394 cause I thought it was butt-ugly Lots of red panels though, so a good parts pack. You should try building it - it looks WAY better and larger in real life than the box photo suggests. Even without stickers. Quote
Jim Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 You should try building it - it looks WAY better and larger in real life than the box photo suggests. Even without stickers. Indeed! In my opinion it's a great set! Nice functions and pretty big in real life. So Jantjeuh, please do build this model. It's underestimated! Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Very well, I was about to break down my 8109 anyway. Next one on my build list is 9394! It better be good Quote
Jim Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I know the majority of EB members are not very fond of the set, but I am a big fan! Must admit that I like planes and helicopters. Looking forward to hearing your opinion! Quote
DrJB Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 I like 9394 too, but it looks much better with the wings pushed back, kinda like a military fighter jet. The official photo (on the box) does not reflect its 'full potential'. Quote
Junpei Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 8069 is great for spare parts. I scrapped it just a day after I built it and the bucket tilting mechanism simply sucks. Quote
skriblez Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 The old crane 8053 is also very good for parts i think. I agree with TLH about 8069, which i found a bit unplayable and "complicated" Quote
DrJB Posted October 27, 2013 Author Posted October 27, 2013 Agreed. I disassembled both 8053 and 8069, and both sit in a box, mixed together ... Haven't gotten to sorting them yet ... Quote
Lakop Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 I bought 9384 a few months ago and it's a very good set. Much better than it looks and it has some interesting functions. The B model is very nice too. H Quote
Jim Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 What's the A model? Guess you mean the 9394 hehe Quote
Paul B Technic Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) Here is my list as it stands at the moment :) 5510 - Off-Road 4x4 - (Display - A Model) 8048 - Buggy - (Display - A Model) 8297 - Off-Roader - (Display - A Model) 8832 - Roadster - (Display - A Model) 8838 - Shock Cycle - (Display - A Model) 8858 - Rebel Wrecker - (Display - A Model) 9393 - Tractor - (Display - B Model) 9394 - Jet Plane - (Parts) 9394 - Jet Plane - (Parts) 9395 - Pick Up - (Display - B model and then converted to custom wheelie bin truck) 42000 - F1 Car - (Display - Nathanael Kuipers' Street Rod) 42005 - Monster Truck - (Display - A Model) 42005 - Monster Truck - (Parts) 42010 - Off-Road Racer - (Display - A Model) Edited December 17, 2013 by Paul B Quote
Hei Li Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Agree that 9394 is really good for parts. I would like to keep most of the flagship as built but I can't afford the space and money for other cool MOCs designed by others. Quote
nicjasno Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 When i was a boy, every set went to the parts bin of course. But this year i started to collect the old sets from the 80s, and those will be kept well ordered in boxes and built every now and then for pure enjoyment. Quote
Erik Leppen Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I'd say 8285, the huge black tow truck. Mostly because it was pretty cheap given the enormous part count, and the final model, while nice, didn't give me the "wow" feeling that some other large sets like 8258 and 8110 did. Quote
S.I Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I've bought half a dozen 8285s over the past couple of years cheap from ebay just for parts, it has something like 50 15l beams alone. Quote
aol000xw Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 When I put some Technic sets on display I felt bad for every other Technic set not on display .Most of them are great in one way or another (mostly got flagships). So now every set is a parts set. Only my Star Wars UCS are on display and for some time now Im feeling the need of moding them. So perhaps I will bricklink a few tons of light grey and motors and Technify/enlarge a few replicas just to keep those UCS intact. Got 42009 and 42006 MISB waiting for my new place to be Lego ready, and I am not sure If I will build them or just study the instructions and cannibalize them without building. Quote
otpi Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I solved this problem by buying more than one of each set. I keep one as display and the others as spare parts. My kids love to play with the display models, and if they break one I have good reason to rebuild it :) Quote
D3K Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I just won an auction for a new 8434 Aircraft for just 150,- NOK (less than 20 Euro), and from what I've read, the model itself is useless. It does have some nice parts in rare colours though.. -2 x 20z single bevel gears in LBG -38 x long friction pins in black -8 x pulley wheels in black -Some nice liftarms and panels in Pearl Dark Gray -A damped shock absorber/spring Overall, for the price, I am happy=) Quote
jantjeuh Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 So Jantjeuh, please do build this model. It's underestimated! I finally cleared a bit of my backlog of 'sets to build', and now it's finally the 9394's turn I'll post my findings when I've built it. Quote

Daniel-Technic Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I keep 8110 and 8043 built and the rest goes to spare parts drawers as I've stopped buying new sets. If there is a new set I like, I simply build it with parts from other sets I got and order parts if I don't have it. Quote
jantjeuh Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Can't wait to hear your opinion Well, basically you were right. The end result looks a lot better than the box art implies (a recurring problem), and has a lot of functionality. Nothing too complex though, but it's a pretty good set altogether. Fun to build, too. I've already broken it down though, needed the red panels for another set Edited January 21, 2014 by jantjeuh Quote
dougstar Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 hello tech heads id like to find out from the seasoned builders which are the ten best sets to have as parts. or maybe they the most popular set that you have all collected. all my parts /set i have to import as there are only two bricklink store locally for me and they are small. i find for me it works out much cheaper to buy a complete set over ordering a bunch of parts. so it would be very interesting to see what you have all bought over the years dougstar Quote
