I was going to ask this question in the LotR & The Hobbit 2013 Set Discussion Thread, but then I figured it might be better suited for it's own topic because a poll can be used here. This thread is also meant as a discussion about the pros and cons of buying each specific number of Mirkwood Elf Army sets. If mods disagree and want to merge it with the other thread then by all means.

Personally I was planning on buying about 10 of the MEA sets in total. After taking a closer look though, I think 5 seems like a much more reasonable number. That way I can still get a good number of elves, orcs, and Wargs without going to crazy with the elves (or Thranduils). I will probably end up just buying another 10-20 Gundabad Orcs (with hair) on BL for hopefully under $4 a piece, 5 more elves to make it an even 20, and then buy 5 or so more of the dark brown Wargs. I am guessing the Wargs should easily be under $7 and closer to 6 since they are going to be available in such a cheap set (almost half the price of the Warg Attack set the gray Warg came in). Right now the gray Warg is barely over $8.

As I already mentioned, I have no need for 30 more elves that 10 MEA sets would give me. I just got 20 of the Mirkwood Elf polybags last year so that would give me 40 green hooded elves and over 50 elves total! More importantly though, I don't want 10 Thranduils. Unlike Eomer in the Uruk-hai Army set, Thranduil's head piece makes him way to distinctive to serve as anything but Thranduil. With Eomer it was pretty easy to mix him in as a standard Rohan grunt. For this reason, and also the inclusion of so many elves, I don't see this set selling anywhere near as well as the Uruk-hai Army one did. I personally bought over 20 Uruk-hai Army sets and I know there were others who bought many more than that. People on average seemed to buy way more of that set than the 1-3 MEA they plan on buying too.

So, how many Mikrwood Elf Army sets do YOU plan on buying and why?

For sure one, probably two. I dont have any elves except from Haldir and those two of the Barrel Escape.

Unless a Smaug set is delivered I dont think I am going to buy that many sets of this wave.

For now, only 1. If I like it really much and the other the hobbit sets not, and the new SW and LOTR sets not, then I think I will buy another one. But I think I am going to buy the hole wave one time, and then maybe the smallest set twice. I think that I won't be spending much money on SW this year, maybe on the battle packs. The sets do not sound really appealing to me. So, I do think 1 of the dlb and mea and that other set, and atleast 2 of the dga. If I have money left, another mea is cool, more elves and orcs, and another warg. But, what to do with the multiples of the named characters?

You could sell the multiples on the internet.

I won't buy many as I'm trying to curtail my spending, and even if I wanted to I couldn't buy many or appreciate them properly.

I'll buy 1 for sure, possibly 2 if it's on a good discount. I'll be selling most of the figures on Bricklink, but might keep some of the hooded elfs to replace their flesh colors with yellow. But mostly, I'm just interested in the bricks.

So it appears the overwhelming majority of people plan to only buy one or two Mirkwood Elf Army sets? Interesting. How does this compare to how many Uruk-hai Army sets you bought?

I only bought one Uruk-hai army and I plan to buy maybe 2-3 MEAs. I will initially get 1 or 2 and build it and see if I can make something out of it or use multiple Thranduil torsos for some purpose. Like others I bought 20 odd Mirkwood Elf Guard polys last year so I am on the deciding on how many of the new Mirkwood Elves I would need or want.

Im buying 30 for sure. I have 30 uruk armies and got many more uruks on ebay and trading freinds. I will probably split another 30 with a friend and keep the orcs and he will keep the elves.

Probably 2, maybe 3. Not as many as the Uruk Hai Army, but I got that many to augment the Helm's Deep scene. Don't ask how many, I can't remember. Maybe 6 that I kept for myself I think. What to do with all the Thranduils is a question.

The DGA set I'm more likely to buy 3 or more, but I don't want to end up with too many Beorns.

0-1, depending on the price tag in Australia. If it's $70, I'll be better off brick-linking Thranduil and the brown warg.

Regarding your question about Uruk-hai Army, Deathleech, I purchased three (two on special for $40, one at full price $60). I find Rohan more appealing than Mirkwood elves, and Uruks (as well as Rohan soldiers) were necessary to give Helm's Deep a nicer display value. Mirkwood elves don't have a structure to go with, which is why I won't need any more. I also liked the set structure of Uruk-hai Army a lot more compared with the Mirkwood Elf Army.

First LOTR or Hobbit set that I don't think I will buy. Not exactly an iconic location, bland design for the outpost, no armoured elves, no ears for the orcs, neck ears on Thranduil.....

I bought 4 Uruk Hai armies since the set first came out. I will buy one immediately and can envision eventually buying four. I like the brick choices, the warg, and orcs. After buying 10 of the elf polybags I don't really need the elves though the shields are appealing.

I will buy one for sure. If I can find a discount I would totally pick up more. I might be willing to buy another one at full price, but I'll see how the winter wave sits with me with all of the other themes I like. So far the start wars sets don't seem appealing and the lego movie sets keep going down in desire after reading descriptions of sets.

If love to get more Elves, but I want more elf hair personally. I don't love neck ears, but it'll do since that is what we are getting. I think I have around 8 elf polybag, but I like these new elves a lot more personally.

I own 3 uruk hai army sets. Two were found at 30% off. For some reason I want more orcs instead of uruks. I love that the orcs in the cheapest set will k have ears. I'll probably buy a lot of that one of it is cheap enough.

I have 2 uruk-hai army already, but I think when they are on discount somewhere, I buy another one, maybe 2. But, I like orcs better then uruk-hai, don't know why. Maybe because I don't have the battle for Helms deep. I do use them sometimes together with fantasy era orcs and the orcs we get now, as bad guys. They mix well together.

I don't understand that not all of the orcs, or atleast most of them get a hair-ear piece. They look so much better with it. I just put helmets on the orcs without ears, but with hair and ears they look cooler, imo.

I will likely get two Mirkwood sets but only got one Uruk-Hai sets. The reason being that I don't buy this things so much for the figures, but for the bricks - and while it was definetely cool that the Uruk-Hai set connects to my (still yet to actually build) Helm's Deep set, it's just a bunch of mainly grey pieces. As a Castle theme collector, I have tons of grey bricks already. But tan and brown (both shades), I can always use more of. And the hooded elves are great as a kind of Forestmen.

My main gripe with the Mirkwood set is that I really don't fancy the shields, which I had expected more from. I'll sell those as well.

I shall probably buy 1, largely because I want the minifigures more than anything, but they're not destinies for LOTR. I could do with plenty of orcs, but that's what I'm going to use the ambush set for.

I bought 2 UHAs (one full price, the other discounted), over 30 UH polies (through a newspaper promo), and some additional elves and elf parts on BL. I also traded a couple of superhero polies for a couple of Mirkwood elf polies.
