I occasionally see those for sale on eBay ... I asked a large store here if they could sell theirs and they said those technically belong to Lego, and Lego people will take them back in some time.

Any idea where one can get them ... at reasonable cost of course?

I checked with Toys R Us, they have order to either return it to LEGO or to destroy them in their trash compactor. So for Toys R Us, your best hope is a dishonest manager, an absent minded manager, or 5-finger discount.

I don't know what store offers them LEGALLY but I did see at Meijer (Midwest USA chain) a display for display set on sale for $90. I didn't pick it up as the plexi was cracked in several spots and Friends isn't my thing. I did take a picture of it if I can remember where it is.

I had the privalige to get my hands on some display's. With and without contens, I was very, very happy too get them . ( A store closed it's doors and I bought them , and through my LUG )

I agree with Lego Otaku, A dishonest manager or another vague way to get your hands on a display is 90 % the way too get your hands on them .

The smaller displays find their way though rummage sales and flea markets here in Holland, only in very small amounts, and then very very expensive.

They pop up on craigslist from time to time. Not sure if they got diverted from the trash compactor or were legitimate, but on last ones I saw the prices were way too high for me.

Many moons ago i worked for a reasonably well uk toy store chain. We were usually told to destroy the displays. However being a lego fan my boss would look the other way when i went to "dispose" of the displays. I ended up with 4 star wars displays which i went on to give to my younger cousin

Chances are if you see a display set for sale, its usually been nicked by the employee

My local toy shop had a couple for sale recently as they were having a clear out. They were very reasonably priced but for me they were of little use as everything was stuck together, even the wheels on the truck in the case was stuck so they would not turn, the figures head were stuck and everything so I did not bother with it. I did consider getting one but it was just stuck too much to do anything with it other than use it as a display which was a bit boring.

I got lucky one day at my local TRU store, the day I went in they were changing the feature wall & this was on the floor waiting to go through the back & put through the compactor! (When I worked at a different branch I could've had a few other Lego items from the feature wall display but didn't bother & they ended up getting crushed).

It was a ceiling hanger & has flasher units in it.

Set 3177 in front of it should give a size of scale

sigh,, quite irritating if they destroy the display.. in my town, i usually ask store manager and if lucky he will offer the display if they still have one for free or with reasonable price. they know the display board itself has a certain value in here,

I've asked numerous times at different stores and I am told over and over they must be returned to the LEGO representative.

What do I have to be to become a LEGO representative : )

I worked at TRU from 2002-2007, and saw many of these displays. They were generally offered to employees at first, and thrown in the compactor if no one wanted them. Later on, we had to save the yellow frames so the reps could bring in a current display. By far the best display we ever had was a UCS X-Wing cut in half mounted against a mirror to represent a complete model. It was really cool. I was able to get some cardboard graphics from the Adventurers and a few from different waves of early Star Wars.

Craigslist here always seems to have those displays up for sale, but I'd much rather have unglued LEGO!

I worked at a TRU and we were told that the cardboard standees went in the compacter, but anything made of plastic or with actual bricks went back to the LEGO rep. The LEGO rep told me that the contents of the plexiglass cases were usually donated to needy kids or childrens' hospitals. That policy changed at some point (I think when they started messily gluing the models together), but they never said what the new policy was. We had a display thief at my store for a while who would pry open a corner of the display case and yank out the Star Wars minifigs, but they usually broke the figs in the process, and there were always remnants left behind in the glue (usually the back of the foot).

I also used to work at Toys R Us and manged to get my hands on an Instectoids display. Unfortunately the lego was all glued together but I was mainly after the wooden display case with the lighting etc in it which all still works.

In another instance my wife managed to get a hold of one of the Lego City Banners from another department store. She just happened to walk in as the employees were dismantling the display.

I asked again at a different TRU store, spoke to the manager, and essentially his answer is that such displays 'belong' to the Lego rep, He brings them in, he takes them out. TRU got nothing to do with this .... Proper question then would be .. what would it take to become a lego rep ... ?

Doubt the reps get to keep the display models, so it wouldn’t help to be one. If you wanted to be one anyway, the only real requirements are persuasiveness and persistence. Being a rep is a sales job.

LEGO retailer display models have always been glued, since the first ones shown at LEGO toy retailers in 1955.  WITHOUT EXCEPTION they have always been glued.  There are even yearly glued display model catalogs.  In my Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide, there is an entire huge chapter devoted to older glued retailer models.  Here are some older examples... from the 1960s and 1970s, but my guide chapter has even modern models.  These are mainly  from 2 of my LEGO friends who buy and restore old glued retailer models... Henk (Netherlands) and Chris (UK)...

i just ordered a few from europe (smaller ones) and they see to work with a power adapter (not included)

anyone has then and knows what voltage is needed ( so i can order them beforehand)
