XL sets (I more or less count all sets more expensive than standard hero/villian sets) offer more pieces pr. Euro (or other currencies), and they have had quite rare pieces from the 2011-and-on part assortment.

Long beams in varies colours (orange, black, dark red of bone 9B, light grey of 8B), the beam 3C double ball cup, large torsos. I guess the list is way longer.

I have purchased multiple copies of Firelord, Black Phantom, Witch Doctor, Stormer and Dragon Bolt. Quite useful for big-scale mocs. And not too badly priced at 50% sale at the end of the products life on the shelves.

WItch Doctor is hard to beat with his beam assortment, including ten 5C beams (double ball cup). The coolest looking set is perhaps Dragonbolt. But hard to chose, I like them all down to Firelord. I don't have a single Furno yet, haven't even tried building him.

If we're limiting our scope to just sets with XL in the name... Evo XL Machine for sure. While not a traditional "XL" hero, it's a great deal more creative and unique than Furno XL, Rocka XL, or even Stormer XL, and it looks great to boot.

If we're including all larger-than-medium-sized sets... probably a toss-up between Evo XL Machine, Witch Doctor, and Dragon Bolt. Furno and Rocka XL were both somewhat underwhelming, Fire Lord's color scheme was all over the place, Jet Rocka had a decent jetpack but an underwhelming figure, and I really can't judge the two larger summer sets this year yet.

How do Scorpio and Black Phantom fare in your ratings?

Anyway, I mostly have to agree with Lyi on this one. Evo XL Machine is probably the best set to be actually referred to as "XL". If we include all $20 or larger sets, I think Dragon Bolt comes out slightly ahead, because I had so much fun building it and so much fun playing with it. Really a work of art — easily the most swooshable constraction set ever, and boasting a great, unobtrusive play feature to boot. I guess Witch Doctor is also a contender, since it was extremely innovative in terms of its building techniques, and still unmatched in size... though I was not fond of it when it came out since I felt like its reliance on Technic building styles was avoiding the challenge of creating an elegant titan with Hero Factory building system rather than confronting it head-on.

Black Phantom came the closest to perfecting Fire Lord's build, but like all sets with that build, it was crippled by absurdly exaggerated proportions. Stormer XL and Furno XL both have redeeming qualities, but also have extremely conspicuous flaws. And the inconsistent design of Scorpio's legs still bothers me. I'm not fond of Jet Rocka's Rocka figure. I feel like the jetpack should have been designed to accommodate smaller figures rather than paired with an unnecessarily gangly version of a character who had been portrayed far more elegantly at a smaller scale.

I'd say Witch Doctor, except for the fact that I ripped him apart for my Polyphemus MOC (which I will post).

Evo XL is pretty good, and has an interesting technique, but I really liked Furno's Bike (although it went better with Nex 2.0)

Furno XL is definitely the best hero XL, but Evo's XL Machine is a close second.

As for the villains, Witch Doctor is an amazing figure, in both design and stature, but I was never able to get one...
