dr_spock Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) 8053 is a good set for parts too. You get 8 wheels, LA, technic bricks, gears. I haven't built my copy yet so I can't say if it was fun or not. Edited October 30, 2013 by dr_spock Quote
DrJB Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) I have 16 such wheels (8053) and can't figure out where the other 8 came from ... The official inventories do not list them .... unless they were counter/alternate parts from another set I have. Edited October 30, 2013 by DrJB Quote
Jim Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Quad bike maybe. They are in lots of sets. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=9392-1 Quote
DrJB Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) Quad bike maybe. They are in lots of sets. http://www.bricklink...em.asp?S=9392-1 Agreed, I see the wheels in 40 sets and the tires in 23 sets .... and of all those I only have 8053. I wonder if there might be small wheel differences (not obvious otherwise). I'd need to disassemble all and take a closer look. I'm thinking very subtle differences as in 32020 vs. 86652 . You'd notice that the 2 wheels are almost identical, except for the shape of the axle hole. Edited October 30, 2013 by DrJB Quote
Lakop Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Greetings, I have a special day coming up next week and I need to treat myself to some lego, problem is I can't decide what technic set to buy. I'm torn between the new Tow Truck (42008) and the F1 Racer (42000). I've noticed the prices have dropped, and continue to drop, on both sets. However, something I saw yesterday is pushing me towards 42000 because of the parts. Your guidance and advice is welcome. H Quote
darsedz Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 in F1 racer - sport truck is a B-set... Quote
UberlegoTV Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I own the F1 and its really cool and all , but I would say the service truck looks cooler. Quote
Freekysch Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I had the same problem as you Horace T, and i got the 42000 and i do not regret it. 42008 is ok, but it has some problems in term of design imho. So, i would say go for the F1 car ! Quote
Lakop Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 42006 I bought 42006 earlier in the year. It's a good set. H I had the same problem as you Horace T, and i got the 42000 and i do not regret it. 42008 is ok, but it has some problems in term of design imho. So, i would say go for the F1 car ! I am leaning more towards it as the days pass. It's cheaper than the tow truck too. H Thanks for your replies so far. The more I look at the F1 the more I could use those parts.. There's a lot of white, in my collection I only have a handful of white. H Quote

DrJB Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) I've noticed the prices have dropped, and continue to drop, on both sets. I have seen comments such as above few times on EB ... Here in the US, prices are usually fixed, unless there is a sale at ToysRUs ... seems we're missing out on some good deals. Edited November 21, 2013 by DrJB Quote

Here in the US, prices are usually fixed, unless there is a sale at ToysRUs ... seems we're missing out on some good deals. The tow truck is priced at £99 on lego shop website (which means it will be that price in store) but it's on amazon for £74. The F1 racer shows as £79 at lego but it's down to £69 in argos and £59 at toys r us (UK) and amazon (UK). Both sets are within my price range. What to do ? H Quote

H I'm currently building 42008 (last book, almost there...), and have already finished 42000. The 42000 is more of a display model in my opinion. There's a few functions in there but they seem to mostly exist because it's technic and technic models need functions. The wheel suspension is really the only interesting part. It's also HUGE. The 42008 I find more interesting for build and play. It's got a single motor driving 5 different functions (including via pneumatics) and it does so in very little space. It's about half the size of the F1 racer (but just as heavy). If it's mostly for parts, you'll have to decide if you want big wheels + suspension, or a motor + pneumatics. Those, and the colors, is what mostly sets them apart. Just don't let the boxes fool you into thinking there's lots of white, or green... most of it is actually red. Junpei Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 I think you should buy the 42000, especially if you're buying for parts. Buy the 42008 if you want an m-motor, another AA battery box, and a crappy mini cylinder. Buy the 42000 if you want 4 large tyres, tons of wishbone suspension arms, mini LA's, many white parts including lots of panels, new suspension hubs, and CV joint parts. And to rephrase the question I asked a while ago, if I can only buy either one, which should I buy- 8880 or 8868? Quote
DrJB Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) Well ... it's a bit of a difficult choice so ... it ultimately depends on what you're after. Here are some pros/cons 8880 is an icon, good as a display model, a lot of functionality and unique parts such as wheels, hubs, suspension arms, and gear shifter. 8868 - has pneumatics (old style) ... but I REALLY do not care for those 'ugly' tires. However, it does come with a 9V motor. You kind of figured by now I'd go for 8880, and it is becoming rather affordable on eBay. (I do have few of the old 9V motors and most parts of the 8868 though ... and that may explain my bias) Edited November 24, 2013 by DrJB Quote

Parts, parts, parts and the learning of building a large car are the attractions of 42000. The attraction of 42008 is also parts and the functions. Or I could just order the parts I require from lego (ie: wishbone suspension). Hmmmm, choices choices. H Quote
Junpei Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 You know, both are actually the same price on BL, around $134 for a complete set. Even though I would LOVE either, I think I might have to make an $130 BL order- 15 large cylinders, 13 switches, and over 30ft of pneumatic tubing! I'll probably end up buying both sets sooner or later. Quote

H I thought of buying just green parts of 42008 and PF/pneumatics only on BL, as other parts are really common. But it turns out ithe price of parts is almost the same as complete new set. 42000 has cool tyres and new batches have new, Boss like, wheels. There lots of white, reb and black plates also. Better wait for sales and buy both. Quote
Lakop Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) I'm going to get 42005 on this occasion. It has some good parts and will provide much enjoyment and experimentation. Funds will be lower than expected this time around, which is much better than last year. However, christmas is just around the corner and another payday commeth. Sorted. H And an 88000 battery pack which is desperately required. H Edited November 26, 2013 by Horace T Quote

Gee Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 I've been looking at 42005 as my first real set after coming back to Technic. Seems like it has a lot of good bits - the steering ball joints, balloon tyred wheels and the knob gears that some favour for transmitting drive power. Since my interest is likely to be in building rc'd MOCs with advanced suspension this could be a good set to get. What are the options for motorizing it? And is it just a poor man's 9398? Quote

Gee Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Are the wheels in 42005 the same as the ones in the Crawler set? Quote
