bjorn77 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Since I started building Lego again a couple of years ago, I have focused on the more advanced models in the Star Wars and City themes. The Technic brand has changed so much since I last built a set (in the early 90's) that it almost doesn't feel like Lego anymore (with the studless approach etc). But I am slowly starting to change my mind, especially after looking at all the wonderful MOC's presented in this forum. I think I just need to have a different mindset and don't look at Technic as "regular" Lego. The announcement of the 42030 Volvo loader also got me excited. It looks like a really great model. But that one isn't coming out in quite a few months, so I want to buy another set but can't quite make up my mind. I prefer the construction sets, both functionality wise and aestethically. Sober design without lots of colors and stickers etc is my kind of style. I like yellow and black :) Out of all sets released in the last few years, my favorite ones are the 8275 Bulldozer and the 8043 Excavator. However, both of those are ridiculously expensive now, so I won't go there. I love the looks of the 8264 Hauler (I also love dumbers in general), but it seems to lack any mechanical functionality. Out of the rest, the two most appealing sets are: 8110 Unimog Big set with lots of functions. Looks are decent and it seems like a good parts set for future MOC's. I can get it for less than 180 euro, which is pretty good here in Sweden where Lego is VERY expensive (as in all Scandinavian countries). 42006 Excavator Not as nice as 8043 but still seems like a fun build and can be motorized. Price seems fair; 60 euro + 30 euro for 8293 Power Functions. What do you think of those two sets? Or are there better ones? I'd also love to build one of all the awesome MOC's I've seen, but that will require much bricklinkning or buying lots of different sets. Or are there any good alternate "C-model" MOC's that can be built from just one single set (excluding motors)? Some smaller RC sports car would be cool. Quote
bjorn77 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I suggest you use this thread. Oops! I searched for exactly that phrase but got zero hits. Mods, please delete this thread, I will use the other one. Quote

It has great looks and awesome functionality (suspension? - checked, motorized functions? - checked, pneumatics? - checked). I think it is the best one to start your technic collection. It also gives a good base to start building mods and MOCs. Sooner or later everyone, who do not get it, will regret this decision :P 42006 - fun little set to build and play with - but not the best as a parts inventory. My suggestion - 42009 - cool model (not as cool as 8110 though, but I am Unimog fanboy ;) ), great as a part inventory (if you do not mind yellow). It is still available in decent price. Quote
jantjeuh Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 My suggestion: get 8110 and 9398. This will yield you 1 x PF M, 2 x PF L, 1 x PF servo and a lot of useful parts, including pneumatics. Should be enough to get you started. Only get 42009 if you plan on building a lot of construction equipment. Quote
bjorn77 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 9398 is the same price as 8110 here and I don't really like its looks. Maybe if it goes on sale though. 42009 is a lot of yellow pieces and is currently discounted on Amazon. It would probably come in handy if I want to build Designer-Han's hauler. I'll go for this or 8110 I think. Quote
MrTekneex Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I could advice to you the set 8109: yellow & beautiful! Set "8110" it's nice too, and if you like it you can also build my C-model Jeep ;) Quote
bjorn77 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 That is a great Jeep, MrTekneex. Now I'm even more inclined to buy the 8110. Quote
jantjeuh Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 9398 isn't the best set, but it's a great parts package. Quote

bjorn77 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) I decided to go with the unimog since it will soon be unavailable. I'm also going to buy a mid size construction vehicle set. Which one is better, 42006 excavator or 8069 backhoe? Edited February 28, 2014 by bjorn77 Quote
jantjeuh Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 8069 has good looks and a fun building experience, but the functionality is kinda lame as you need to turn lots of knobs to operate it. 42006 has good looks, good building experience, and, when motorized, is fun to play with. So my vote is for 42006. Quote

MrTekneex Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) couldn't say it better ;-) Yeah! Perfect description! Also 9396 is very interesting, but isn't a costruction vehicle. Edited February 28, 2014 by MrTekneex Quote
Kumbbl Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Yeah! Perfect description! Also 9396 is very interesting, but isn't a costruction vehicle. well, but if anyone searches for construction vehicles then i always strongly recommend to take into account also the out of production sets - there are so many and most of them are IMHO better then the current available 42006 and 8069.... Freekysch Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 If i were you i would try to find 8069 at a good price and buy it asap. It is a very very good set with nice functions. Simple but clever ! Quote

I guess 8069 will be unavailable in a year, unlike 42006. So maybe I should start with that one (or better yet, get both :) well, but if anyone searches for construction vehicles then i always strongly recommend to take into account also the out of production sets - there are so many and most of them are IMHO better then the current available 42006 and 8069.... The older ones are not so easy to get a hold of. At least not for an acceptable price. Which of the older sets in perticular would you recommend? Quote

Which of the older sets in perticular would you recommend? it depends... e.g. here in germany you find plenty of... ;-) i would recommend - in this ordering: 8455 - best backhoe - much much much.... much better than 8069 - or more general: one of the best technic models ever - IMHO a must have.... 8459 - best front loader - pneumatic! 8431 - very good mobile crane - cute and full with features (the only one which has slewing by gears!) - but it is fully studded...do not know if you like this 8265 - very good front loader but only with added motor (easy) - looks still perfect with a motor - otherwise (without motor) i would rate it as the 8069 for the same reason - unplayable... will probably become much cheaper after releasing the new forthcoming 42030.. 8421 is also very good but here you can also buy current 42009... both of them have pros and cons... the mobile crane 8053 is a good model but it has two serious problems: a) without motor it is quite unplayable - at least if you want avoid getting typewriters cramp ;-) - same as for 8069 and 8265 b) with motor it looks completely ugly But it is a great part assortment and it has a very good B-model You can reduce the problem a) a little bit by replacing the turning knob by a real crank... BTW: The hauler 8264 is boring - IMHO one of the worst models TLG has ever releases... and do not misunderstand: 8069 is really fun to build, it has some very clever designs, no question - but its playability is really really lousy, believe me - so it depends what do you expect from this model..... I'll save that money for 42030. 8265 can still be found at a fairly good price, and if it wasn't for 42030 I would already have bought it as it seems very good. 8069 seems like a nice set for only 50 euro. Same with 42006. There might be better ones, but not for that price. At least not around here. Quote

JGW3000 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 TRU is offering a good deal on 8110 (in-store only, its the last of 'em), 9398, and 42009 (but not on 42000, oddly enough). I've already nearly maxed out my LEGO budget for the year. Should I get one of these, or wait for 42025 or 42030 to become available? If you can get only one, which? I am leaning towards one of the 2014 sets, like to get some opinions. Quote

One for A model and B model. I might pick up a third for parts considering I really like construction equipment themed models. Quote

Local second hand market is equally expensive. People look at bricklink prices and add 30% :P. Will have a look at ebay though. Quote
