Blakbird Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Just buy a used one on Bricklink and have it shipped from Germany. Even with the International shipping, it will easily be cheaper than buying it in the USA. Get it without a box and the shipping is inexpensive. There's no reason to get it new in the box if you are going to build it anyway. Quote
EV3Noob Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Guys... $200-$300 for a new 8258? No way here in Russia! $410 - that's what I saw today. Couldn't afford it at this price - so I skipped the offer. The set was sold in a couple of hours. As for me... I like this set, although it's not an 8110 Unimog (which I adore :)).. And I like 8285, too. But $350-$450 per each set make me cry. Quote
Rishab N Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I'd definitely get it. It was my first technic set and is also my favorite Quote
DrJB Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 (edited) 8285 is way cheaper than the red truck... No problem to get one below 100€... Where? All I found were around $200+ ... of course, looking for silver edition. Edit: Found them ... ebay.de Edited March 14, 2014 by DrJB Quote
Lakop Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I missed out on 8258 also, it's one of several that got away from me. I think i've got enough parts now to build one (except for the red rectangular panels) but I have some blue ones on order. If you want it, keep an eye on ebay etc and i'm sure one will turn up at a better price. H Quote
dr_spock Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I don't think the 8258 is worth spending $300+ USD for me. It is a good looking model and not that rare. Quote
oldcasper Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I got pulled into technic half a year ago and over that time aquired some sets through good deals (8110, 8070, 9397) and one at msrp 41999 . I have been reading forums and putting together things as much as life permits. But ever since I seen 8258, I couldnt get it out of my mind. Call it love at first sight . With current prices on that set being ridiculous, I hoped that maybe one day I am going to be able to have budget for it. Due to getting good eBay Bucks promotions, and getting more $$$ than expected, I can now comfortably buy the set. Problem now is that I do not know whether it is worth $300-400. It is awesome set, but I can get much more parts at Lego's msrp prices plus take advantage of x2 VIP month. I like 42000 and the upcoming 42029 has great parts. But I am not excited about them. I would like to find out, preferrably from people who own the above set, whether or not it is worth the $$$ or should I spend it more wisely and get more bang for my buck. I appreciate your inputs. I had the same hesitation. Cost-wise, finally I choose 8110*2, 42009*2 :) Quote
madjelly Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 (edited) Thanks for the inputs . Ended up getting 9395, 42000 and 42009 all new and sealed for $310 total Edited March 16, 2014 by madjelly Quote
bjorn77 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) A little summary of the three sets I recently bought: 8043 - Motorized Excavator I wanted to build both the A- and B-model, so I started with B since I had a feeling I wouldn't want to take apart the excavator once built. The build for the tracked loader was quite easy except for two things - differentiate between black and dark grey pieces in the online manual and getting the wiring of the motors correct (the wire for the front montor was just barely long enough). Mechanically, the model is maybe a bit simple, but in return it looks very good and the playability is awesome. If it wasn't so darn expensive, I'd buy another set so that I could keep both the A- and B-model built. I'll keep the loader for a while and will build the excavator later. Great set, as expected. 8110 - Unimog I haven't actually come around to build this yet. There's something about it that doesn't really appeal to me. Maybe it's the scale. The size of the model is so big for a relatively small vehicle (compared to most trucks and construction vehicles). It's just too big for display and even for playing around with. Then again, maybe I should build it before I make my judgement :). Or I'll keep it as a parts pack. Or see it as an investment that I will make a profit from in a few years. Time will tell. 9395 - Pick-Up Tow Truck I bought this primarily as a parts pack. Price is great, I got a new set on Bricklink for less than what it was retailed for, even though it is out of production now. Almost a thousand parts for 50 euro is undeniably excellent. The build was fun with some nice mechanics, even though the functions might not be the most interesting. However, what I like most about this set is how good it looks. This has got to be one of the best looking Lego Technic sets ever! And for somone like me who considers stickers to be an abomination that turns a good looking lego model into a children's toy (which we all know it isn't), I'm happy to see that the stickers here are mere decoration and not an integral part of the visual design. Don't apply them and the model looks a hundred times better. I'm probably going to buy another copy of this set for parts and keep the current one on display. Edited March 18, 2014 by bjorn77 Quote
Kumbbl Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Hi all, i would say, topic-title says all ;-) What would you say? Thanks a lot Quote

dougstar Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 hello tech heads. as i have only recently started to collect technic sets i do not have to much in the way of construction/heavy machinery. i have the opportunity to buy 8265 wheel loader, now here is my question should i just hold off until the release of 42030 or 8265? dougstar Quote
bjorn77 Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I'm in the same position as you and decided to wait for 42030. I think it will be a killer set. Quote
dougstar Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 well im sure the 8265 will be round $180 with shipping with box extras manuals. body know what the 42030 will retail for? Quote
Kumbbl Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 well im sure the 8265 will be round $180 with shipping with box extras manuals. where do you live? 180$? I assume you mean a new and MISB one? used ones in very good condition (with perfect box and BI) are much cheaper... Quote
Jullian_pdx Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 well im sure the 8265 will be round $180 with shipping with box extras manuals. body know what the 42030 will retail for? I read somewhere that the 42030 will be around $260 in the US. Quote
dougstar Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 i live in south africa so if i get a set the cheapest set 8265 on bricklink thats with no box no extras for me thats $150 before customs :-( and after they hit me at customs $175. we get nailed big time! Quote
Freekysch Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I say you try getting the 8265 too, it is a very nice set with lots of details. Maybe look for a good deal to appear and you may get it at a good price. Quote
VBBN Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Lately I've been looking to get back into Technic. It's been quite a while since my last set, and I'm going to have to lurk around get reassociated with many of the terms and new parts.I do want to grab a set or two to get the feel for the lineup again, and am not sure what's really going to give me the most. I'm not interested in construction or utility vehicles, or anything along those lines at the moment. my main interest lies in supercars, indy cars, etc. I was looking at the Indy car from last year, however I felt the price was outrageous and the sale prices seemed pretty steep even still, and after doing some research here in the Technic forum it appears that you guys agree. I'm not looking to really MOC just yet as my parts supply is far too low. When I do get into it I plan on pursuing supercars, however that's a story for another day. What I'm looking for here is a set in my criteria that is a good set within itself; Looks good, a lot of nice functions, possibly some cool alternate models, and is within a reasonable price range, somewhere around $50-100. Quote
Blakbird Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 If you aren't interested in construction equipment, the pickings get slim. None of the 2014 sets are available in North America until October, so no luck there. The 8070 super car is long out of production. Personally, I recommend you think again about the 42000 race car. I reviewed it here on Eurobricks and did not find it to be overpriced compared with other sets. It is a HUGE model and will certainly reintroduce you to all the modern parts including linear actuators. After that, you can't miss RoscoPCs cars if you like Formula 1. Quote
Erik Leppen Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 8110 - Unimog I haven't actually come around to build this yet. There's something about it that doesn't really appeal to me. Or see it as an investment that I will make a profit from in a few years. Time will tell. I thought it was a great set to build. I even enjoyed fooling around with the finished set. The pneumatic crane works well, and unlike some mechanic cranes we have seen is actually capable of lifting stuff (actually the weak point is the gripper). The 4WD and suspension is also cool. The steering is bad, but fixed relatively easily (friction pins vs. smooth pins). And I liked the color scheme. I never built the snow plow alternative though. Quote
