Jim Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Hi, I am thinking about getting a set either 42028,42029 or 42025. I have about 10 technic sets and am familiar with the technic theme. I would like opinions of which is the best in terms of parts price functionality and appearance. Thanks It very much depends on what you like to do with the set. Do you display it, do you use the parts the build MOCs? For me it's a no-brainer. It would buy the 42025 in a heartbeat. It's an awesome set, and it's something different than a car, truck or construction equipment. But it's a personal preference. Quote
Freekysch Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 (edited) I too would say go for the 42025 even though I am not the biggest fan of planes. It is a very nice display set, it looks great and it has some nice functions as well ! If you are looking just for parts, maybe 42028 would be better because it has pneumatics too, but it is just ugly design wise. Sorry for the mistake, i was thinking of 42008 when i said 42028 has pneumatics. Edited October 23, 2014 by Freekysch Quote

If it has, that means I was seriously ripped off the other day Quote
Kumbbl Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 i still would recommend 42025 - many parts, great model, very good B-Model(!)... But 42029 is also very good - yes, it's a car and yes, it is red but it is really a great car with one of the best suspensions Lego has ever made... well, official retail 90€ is too expensive but here in germany amazon sells it for 69€ and this is IMHO a very fair prize - more than 1000 parts and apart from a real gear-box it has all what you need for own cars... and it can be MODed very well.... overall: i love this set - one of the best releases of TLG over last two years... so it really depends what you want to do... PETBottleToLego Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Choose both 42028 & 42029? 2 models are better than 1 , the price is almost the same. those red and yellow parts are good looking than the white ones . Any way its your choice, just my opinion  Quote
Cancuino Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Hi, I'm new at Lego Technic and I'd like some pieces of advice from you. I don't own any set yet and want to build things that involve gearboxes and things like that. I've thought about the 42009 set that I really like, I think it's a good start but I'm not sure if that's a good choice. What do you think?. Quote
Jim Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 The 42009 is definitely worth starting with. My first set after my dark ages was the Mk I crane, which was really cool (1800+ parts)!! This set has over 2600 parts. I would say go for it!! Quote
bonox Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 A toystore not far from me has an 8110 on the shelf for $329 AUD is this a good price? should i get it? it seems to be cheaper than any ebay listing i can find. if you want to pick it up, it's about the best price you'll get. Given you were looking at ebay for delivery though, bricks to the world have it for $304.95 delivered. I bought one from them not so long ago. http://bttw.com.au/lego-themes/lego-technic Quote

Humdrum Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 (edited) I think I'll get 42025. Thanks One thing about the 42025 to consider though is that it has a lot of stickers. Mainly the front section of both wings are all 'stickered up'. I don't know if you like stickers or not, but I think it is important to some AFOLs. I still have my 42025 in the box because I can't decide to put the stickers on or not. Edited October 30, 2014 by Humdrum Quote

I used to ignore the stickers. But after writing some reviews, I've become fan of them. Simply apply them and if you don't like 'em anymore you can always buy some extra panels from Bricklink. Will cost you a few buck. Quote

That's a solution I hadn't considered before, I'll definitly take it in consideration Thanks! Or dank je wel! The model does have a certain appeal without stickers You know what, I'll just leave it in the box long enough for it to become a collectible Nah, I bought it for display, and that's exactly what it'll do in my upcomming display! Jim Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I do like the stickers a lot on this model, but the picture you've posted looks great to. All in all, it's just a fantastic model. One of my favorites!! Quote
gadgetto Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 (edited) Hi all, this is my first post in this forum. I want to enter the lego technic enthusiast world and wanted to buy my first ever big model set. I am thinking to buy 42006 and 42009. The problem is, I am still not that sure to buy 42006. Is this a good set? For part donor? Actually, I just want to buy it because of the actuator and caterpillar system. Edited December 8, 2014 by gadgetto Quote
Freekysch Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 42006 is a good set if you missed 8043. It has a nice price for what you get, the functions work good, the looks are ok. For me, it was a good buy even if i have the 8043. Quote
wakokid23 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I just bought a lego technic set on a whim yesterday(42027 desert racer) as well as the creator set 31022 (quad bike) mostly just because I thought it looked cool and I hadn't played with legos in years. the desert racer turned out to be really awesome and I thought it would be cool to get a little more into it and try to build some cars of my own. I don't really have the financial means to get into the RC/supercar stuff so I was thinking of just getting one or two more slightly larger sets to give myself some bits and pieces to play with. I was thinking of either the red monster truck(42005) or the hot rod(42022) but if buying a few smaller sets is a better option I'd like to know. Thanks Quote
zweihander Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 42027 & 31022 were also one of the first sets I bought :) As a person who went through the phase you're going through now ~6 months ago, I'd go with the monster truck. It has a more consistent color scheme, and if you want to extend your part collection in the future to build something bigger, red pieces are much more abundant in technic than the blue ones in the hot rod, therefore it would be easier to achieve color consistency. I also think it has a nicer selection of parts (frames, torque balls, shock absorbers etc.). It is a bit weaker than 42022 gearwise (less number & types of gears) Quote
wakokid23 Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 thank you erelender :) I am definitely more interested in doing off road vehicles and I think there's potential for a lot of cool designs. I did think the monster truck was a better option for this aspect, but I was interested in the hot rod more for the steering and stuff. the creator set actually had a lot of good parts including a few technic pieces, some grills and some cool wheels. ithe quad model actually has a simple steering system. I wasn't really concerned with color matching at this point, mostly just because I just want to be able to be able to build with it and understand it as a system first. the monster truck seems to be the direction I'm going in though, and with it I can incorporate the pullback motor and stuff. I was also interested in the mini off roader just to learn about the suspension system. I don't really have the means to buy a big set,but I can collect small to midsized sets over time. also,I do have a large box of bionicle parts at my family home. would any of that be useful in technic model building for anything besides the pins and connectors? I collected a lot of bionicle sets over the years and held onto it, for sentimental value more than anything. is there any use in the torso and midsection pieces, weapons or masks? Quote
Freekysch Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I am in a bit of dilemma over here, i have the change to buy a 8110 at aprox 125 euro and i do not know what to do. Is it worth buying ? I must admit it is not my favorite set, but I think at this price it may be an ok purchase. Quote
sdotcarter Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 At that price I would get 2 and I already have 2. Build the plow and bed/arm. Quote
TheNextLegoDesinger Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Hy i have read a lot times that the 42009 mobile crane is a good set for parts. While i was looking for a good price i had found an action on the 42009 and also one on the 42030. Here are the 2 cheapest sites i had found: http://www.fun.be/lego-42009-technic-mobiele-kraan-mk-ii.html http://www.speelgoedstore.be/product/464269/lego-volvo-l350f-wiellader-rc-42030.html?ref=14760&utm_source=beslist&utm_medium=pricecomparison&utm_content=default1 Both are belgian sites but i think you can read the price. So which one should i buy? thank you for reading( and a awnsering). Quote
arik Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 I think it depends what you value. (Hasn't this been discussed quite recently already?) Basically, 42009 is a good building experience and provides a good set of parts (proven by the many great C-models of it here). 42030 provides a nice amount of PF and remote control parts, if you're short of those. 42009 gives you 10 medium sized wheels, 42030 gives 4 big ones. I just got 42009 and I'm quite happy with it, and not planning to get 42030 (as I have the PF stuff already). Quote
Freekysch Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Well, 42009 and 42030 are both nice and very good seta and it all depends on what you want more: a set with a huge parts count, 10 wheels, and some PF or a set with a smaller parts count but fully RC ? If I were you, i would buy 42009 just because I like the design and functions of the set better and I dont need the RC parts as i already have 8043. So, The question is: RC stuff or lots of pieces ?
