sama Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 The Unimog does have the most pneumatic parts out of the three mentioned but if you want a set stronger in pneumatics, I would recommend investing in 8455. But it is very expensive in the market right now as it is long gone out of production and it is a very rare and special set. Quote

It would probably be cheaper to just buy all the parts individually from Bricklink and print your own instructions rather than try to acquire a legitimate copy of 8455. According to Brickstore, it would cost about $230 to get the ~700 parts to build 8455, and even less if you were willing to change to new gray. 2/3 of that cost is the pneumatic components which you can get more cheaply directly from LEGO now. Compare that with the average set price of $250-$300 on Bricklink. Quote

Freekysch Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 So, i found set 8258 at aprox 159 euro to buy second hand, is it worth it ? The problem is that it doesn't have any spare parts :(. Quote
Samanen Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 It's absolutely worth it. It's a great set, a must have! And 159€ is pretty cheap actually. Quote
CisFran Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I can also source a MISB 8258 for EUR200. I don't know if it's a good deal or not Quote
DarkShadow73 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) Hey there, this is my first post on this forum (please excuse my english but i'm from Romania and my skills aren't so great - only member from this country i think ). Last year i bought Technic set 8053, which was the first big Lego Technic sets, so this year i plan on buying another one. I have 2 sets that raised my interest 8265 and 8069. In your opinion, which should i buy ? I looked over some reviews and 8265 looks much complex / bigger / better but 8069 looks ok too. So, what should i buy ? :D As what was said in the 2nd reply to this topic, there really isn't much comparison as the 8265 is more of a mid-large model, while the 8069 is much smaller, but still IMO an equally nice model. If I was in your shoes I'd go with the 8265, if you can find it at a reasonable price now since it was released in 2009. The 8069 is still available nearly everywhere and hasn't been retired yet by TLG. If you do get the 8265, definitely add PF to it, all that hand-winding of the gear on the back detracts from it as it has for other models in its class that give you the option of adding PF. And the b model of the 8265 is rather cool too, whereas the b model of the 8069 is kind of cheesy looking. If you want another option in about the same price range as the 8265 (well a bit more but it has PF with it) is the 8109 Flatbed Truck. It is still available at TRU online and in some stores, whereas Lego S@H has sold out of it, and usually when they sell out, that's it, its gone. The Unimog does have the most pneumatic parts out of the three mentioned but if you want a set stronger in pneumatics, I would recommend investing in 8455. But it is very expensive in the market right now as it is long gone out of production and it is a very rare and special set. Agreed, the 8455 is a model to go down as an all-time masterpiece, but sourcing all the parts from multiple BL sellers could really add up unless you have a tremendous spare parts collection. Freekysch Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 So, for some time i am thinking of buying a mid-range lego set, and i got two candidates: 1. 42000 Formula 1 2. 42008 Truck These sets are in the same price range, have almost the same number of pieces and i really do not know what to get. The Formula 1 car looks great, but does not pack a lot of functions and i kinda like trucks. The problem with 42008 is that i really hate the design of it and i hate the green color. On the other side, it has some nice functions and some pneumatic elements. So, what to get ? Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) I would probably go for the F1 car,it has those new wheel hubs which may be handy if you link to 'moc'. Edited September 18, 2013 by Alasdair Ryan Quote
dr_spock Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Since you hate green, 42000 would be the better choice. Quote
Jim Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 So, what to get ? What is your intention? Putting it on display? Using it for parts? Need the looks? Want the functions? It all boils down to some of these questions. I really hate the looks of some sets, but after building them I got to appreciate most of them. Quote
Freekysch Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Well, i only buy sets to display them (i slowly run out of space), i never used them for parts. I generally go for the looks, but i can not say that i mind a set with a complex gearbox (i love 8258, 8043). Thank you all for your help, probably i will buy 42000 because of the looks, and later buy the 42008 too if i have enough money. Quote
Jim Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 The 42000 looks awesome....but applying the sticker is mandatory! Quote
jantjeuh Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 42008 is really one of the ugliest Technic sets released in the past decade. What were they thinking at Lego ?!? But yeah, I second the vote for 42000. It looks good, and it's a nice parts pack to boost. Quote
Kronos Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 42000. I have two of them. I built Nathaniel Kuiper's "C" model with one, and parted out the other. I'm thinking of getting a couple more just for parts. Quote
Freekysch Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I wanted to tell you guys that i bough the Formula 1 set and i can say it is a very nice set. Only one problem, it is too big for my shelf and i am running out of space to put my display models. Ups ... Overall, i can say it has very good value for the price i got it (lego store price, actually was a gift so i did not pay anything for it). Quote
jantjeuh Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Time for a dedicated Lego display room Quote

Maybe time for a bigger shelf or shorten the model like making it a chibi F1. Quote
Freekysch Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Time for a dedicated Lego display room That would be very nice, but i am afraid i do not have a spare room in my house . I will just have to buy more Lego cabinets or, make the model shorter. Quote
skriblez Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I am slowly running out of space for my models in my little corner of the living room. Quote
Rockbrick Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Part of my technic renaissance was bagging ex-flagships on ebay - not MSIB of course but I managed to get 8421 & 8455 for under 100€ each, and 8439 for about 35€ - this was about 3 years ago though I loved building 8455 - 10 pneumatic cyclinders for making all sorts of contraptions with (it still is the back hoe) and had actually costed building it from parts but my auction snipers got me a good deal 8421 I received built already - its very disty still and will rebuild it soon just to clean the parts. Battery box is not forgiving to acid leaks from the batteries. then 9398 came along and well - I need to do some more MOCs now.... Quote

Even though it was already built, that's still a nice score. Although now that 42009 is out, I wonder if the value on 8421 will fall? Quote

Although now that 42009 is out, I wonder if the value on 8421 will fall? It was a long time of careful auction searching for badly advertised and misspelled items and auction sniping.... Since then the prices and public have gotten wiser... but I do agree with the release of 42009 the price will come down but probably not for MSIB or complete sets in good condition with both manuals .... if you can find them 8466 remains my unconquered challenge.... maybe one day in a carboot sale....
