Freekysch Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Actually i managed to get my copy of 8285 at 110 euro and built it last night. What can i say (beside my sore fingers ), i enjoyed this set, love the design (which is a bug plus for me, because all of my sets go on display), looks beautiful next to 8258 Crane Truck but yes, i admit that is has very limited functions. One thing that i like is the pneumatic system (first set that i own with pneumatics), too bad it is very limited. I have only one complain, my set has no metallic silver wheels, only normal ones . Here is a picture of it next to his brother. Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 No metallic silver wheels? Did you buy the set off Bricklink and was it listed as complete? Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Looks like you're missing the metallic silver pin joiners (without slot) as well. Those are quite expensive, just like the metallic silver wheels. I think you might have been ripped off Quote
Wiseman_2 Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Umm, not sure about everybody else, but I don't think all copies of 8285 had the metallic silver wheels, especially later releases of the set. I got mine boxed new and unopened from a toy store in 2008, and though there were other metallic silver coloured parts in the set (like the grille parts on the front and the round dishes), the wheels were not. For what it's worth, it still looks pretty good when built, even if there's not much complexity to it. Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 You're right, I just checked on Bricklink and there was an alternate version released without the metallic silver wheels and pin joiners. Kind of lame, but I guess Freekysch didn't get ripped off then (well, depends if he thinks it was worth the price). Quote

Not sure why TLG played it that way though. Quote

Lost_In_Noise Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) The silver wheel version was a but more expensive afaik. Sold mine two weeks ago to some (hopefully) happy someone. Edited October 23, 2013 by Lost_In_Noise Quote
Freekysch Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) I didn't buy the set over bricklink, bought it from a friend but i didn't know that they were two versions of it. I'm glad to hear that. I really do not mind that i gt the version without silver wheels, it would have been nice to get it thou. Maybe i'll buy them off bricklink someday if i feel like it. However, i am very satisfied with this set, too bad all of my display cabinets are full and o have no place for it (now i have to buy additional storage space ). This year has been a good Lego year, got 8258 and 8285 too (beside 42000, 42007, 42006). I have another question: what other sets from the last years are a mush-have for a Technic collector ? This are the sets i own, so you can get an idea of what i have. Edited October 24, 2013 by Freekysch Quote

jantjeuh Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 9396 is already in my list, look closer ;-) I agree, it's a great set. Quote

jantjeuh Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Yep, we did. I already own a copy though, don't see the point in buying another :) Already have plenty of yellow and red liftarms and panels. I'm looking forward to the 1h14 cargo plane peter_m mentioned, as I can use some blue/white parts. Quote

Never mind, I need to focus on one thing at a time Really looking forward to the plane as well. Quote
peter_m Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Looks like I am messing up the thread :). Sorry! Quote

Classic: 8880, 8868, 8480, 8459. From the last decade must-haves i will buy when i'll can get them at a decent price (where i live there is no Lego Store and shipping is expensive): 42009, 8275, 8109 and 8455. I know 9396 is a very good set, with a great price, but i'll have to think about it, because i'm not the biggest fan of helicopters or planes. Quote

Classic: 8880, 8868, 8480, 8459. very good selection but i would add: - the barcode truck 8479 - very cool and interesting set! - also the two universal sets 8094 and 8485 - the T-rex of the latter one is one of the best models - and unique ;-) - also very good: 8862 - a great backhoe with a very clever and aesthetic construction (very symetric gear-trains, beautiful) and one of the best B-models, a combine harvester - the 9396 Heli - not the most interesting build but great functions, great part repository and plenty of room for MODs - and very aesthetic (but: the older 8856 heli is almost even better - very interesting build and very cool flex-system powered functions - for me a must have for lovers of the old classics) P.S. But i will never understand why people are ranking the 8285 tow truck so high? what does this model offer besides a great part count and cool optics? but of course i do not need to understand everything Quote
jantjeuh Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) 8285 looks nice and is big, and you easily mod it to have extra functionality. I modded mine to be fully RC using an auto-valve. By the way, once again, I did list 9396 :-P I'll make it bold. Edited October 24, 2013 by jantjeuh Quote

My sets had two variations, some with ten silver wheels, some six silver and four bley, others later had sets with ten bley wheels, the other silver parts also varied. Quote

Here is a possible explanation though. I never cared much for the long-nose type trucks here in the US as there are way too many of them on the streets and they look ... 'boring'. Somehow I find MAN/Scania type trucks more 'modern in their looks. I wonder if the 'opinion' is reversed east of the Atlantic. Though, staying with Lego, I do like the 8258 because of all the various functions and parts assortment. Edited October 25, 2013 by DrJB Quote
Ralf Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 My favorite truck in the moment is 42008, but the colour...... green Not really my loveliest colour but is possible to change, i´ve checked the parts. A tow truck should be yellow, orange or red........ only my personal view. Quote
