As someone else pointed out though, the only downside is that it is open at the back, rather than having the different sections lifting off. Still, it's amazing! Does it still connect to other modulars on both sides? How do they look alongside it? Great work! Quote

To be honest I knew the I wanted the pavement to be deep enough to accommodate a queue for the outside of the building. The vertical windows were built in 2 large sections. By the time I made the ground level to support it, whatever was left became the pavement. Perhaps in retrospect I would have made the pavement even bigger and put some trees or something in. All of the building except for the road is built on base plates for stability and so the road can be 'tacked-on' and taken off easily so I can move for photos. There is no support underneath the road so it tends to sag if I make it too big. I wasn't aware of your standard before I started any of these larger scaled projects but it looks great! My only problem with this build is that it is open at the back. I would have to double up the front of the building or add a back wall to create a whole Cinema. :) Apart from that this is a wonderful MOC full of detail, design and interesting build techniques.. I have not done a traditional style modular for the last few MOC's I have made. I don't have any particular layout as I don't have the room so I just build a MOC at a time so I have the freedom for any size and scale. Some of the building techniques I have used usually span several floors and having to split the floors into stack-able sections stops the 'flow' of what I want to do. The width of the buildings means the floors would become very heavy and fragile. I also double line walls so I can get different colours and patterns on the inside to whats on the outside, I feel any style I choose won't be seen very well from a top-down view as I have experienced in the past. I suppose even the official modulars have their walls removed so they can photo the inside from 'side-on'. Sadly it doesn't connect to the other modulars, its slightly out of normal scale at 80x40 to the pavement and raised by a couple of studs. I hope this helps you understand why I choose to build this way The official LEGO Palace Cinema set is nothing compared to this one. Absolutely amazing. Just out of curiosity, how many bricks did you use roughly to build this set? I bet it cost more time planning the design than building it! I have plans to design a small LEGO city with buildings such as the Palace Cinema or the Grand Emporium sets, or at least I want to achieve a quite impressive amount of city life details. Getting the palace cinema earlier this year really got me thinking about my own ideas and what I like about cinema design and that's what spurred me on! I would guess it took 6000-8000 bricks. This could probably be changed with 'larger' bricks. I pretty much exhausted my tan collection! I make my designs up as I go along, since there is so many cinema designs I was really inspired and changed my mind about what I wanted to do throughout the project. This is probably why it takes so long to complete! I usually design my 'main features' and work the rest around it. In this case I knew I wanted inset film 'posters', a curved corner, vertical windows and a large bold name on the side. I didn't map it out as much as I usually would I just designed the ground floor and made everything else around it. Thankfully the space I left for lettering was quite forgiving! Cheers! I thought the normal doors wouldn't look right on a building like this. It took a couple months to build and sadly it will be destroyed like the others to make way for something else as I don't have a huge selection of bricks or the room to house these heavy and difficult to move models Quote

I personally prefer the open back to having walls on all four sides. It is more accessible for play and you get to see the interior during display. I have even modified my official modulars to have an open back. Quote
