Chromeknight Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 And how do you test if someone is a witch? Weigh them against a duck?
swils Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "Light 'em on fire of course! If they burn, they're innocent and we made a wee little boo-boo!"
Flare Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Benji looks oddly at Thormanil. "For some reason that method does not sound quite as credible as Nerwen's suggestion."
swils Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "Last I checked, ducks're quite good at floatin'. I think Nerwen's tryin' to be subtle about a similar approach--if it sinks or drowns, its a witch."
Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "Well, start from the beginning. What burns apart from witches?"
Sisco Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "Well, start from the beginning. What burns apart from witches?" "More witches!"
swils Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "This girl, I like her! Can we keep her, eh Guts? Can we?!" <Should probably be asking Haldor instead.>
Scubacarrot Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "'Fraid not. Witch hunter. What a joke. Witches are just mages with different magic."
UsernameMDM Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "I have done many things another in my position may regret. Things that, as you can obviously see, have left an indelible mark upon me, and upon the reactions of those around me. Necromancers of my caliber and fervor are perhaps rightfully despised. And so I remain here. Undisturbed, and retaliation against potential threats unnecessary." "Hmm, I see. So, with your unique skill set, what is your job on this vessel and on this voyage?"
Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "'Fraid not. Witch hunter. What a joke. Witches are just mages with different magic." "However, there is no denying that type of magic is commonly used for nefarious deeds."
The Legonater Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 "However, there is no denying that type of magic is commonly used for nefarious deeds." So is money, and power, and food. I don't see anyone hunting people who use those.
Peppermint_M Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Tesni slept away the voyage, there was little time to rest during quests.
Chromeknight Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I have to disagree Master le Chavalier. I have learnt from hard experience that if you're looking for ethical magic users, witches magic is nothing but shows and tricks. They have a predilection for the seeds found in hard shells, and they are terrible as private investigators. They are no more or less nefarious than those who use what they offer. Perhaps less so, witches cannot handle streets.
Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 "Ah, you have me outwitted. Those are very true points, Dyren and Elf...? Did I get your name? Anyways, though money and food and things are used to do bad things, they can commonly be used to help those. Magic helps those too, but witch magic? Can we not classify that as something different?"
Chromeknight Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I remember you Alexandre. You entered the hall wearing a strange helm patterned after the stories of a land called Spayn. But it was a long while and I am sure you've met many others since. My name again is Nerwen.
The Legonater Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 It's Dyric, and no. You clearly have not heard of Atramor - a witch, but also a hero of Heroica. He's done plenty to deserve the title, even if he may not see it himself.
Capt.JohnPaul Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 OOC: Sorry, weird typo or something on Dyric's name. "I believe I have met this Atramor. He certainly uses magic for good. But again, I think his magic is different. I'm sure the magic Heroes train in is uncomparable to what ever these other evil witches on the street learn their arcane abilities." "Ah, my memory is stirred. Nerwen, we have not been passes introductions. By any chance were you at Dastan?"
Zepher Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 The kobold cackles at all the jokes, and then turns more seriously to the others. "How many witches have you actually killed?" Benji asked inquisitively. "One," says the kobold, quite seriously. "Only one. I wish it were more. I cornered one once in Charis, but I haven't been able to find one since." There is a deep regret in the kobold's high pitched voice. "Witches are evil." And how do you test if someone is a witch? Weigh them against a duck? "They are always open about it. There is no way to hide their power. Do you know what the witch Baba did? She sank a continent." He smiles loosely, showing once more his very sharp teeth. "They are observers and doers. They give power and take it away. We are their toys. They are very dangerous."
Scorpiox Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 The kobold cackles at all the jokes, and then turns more seriously to the others. "One," says the kobold, quite seriously. "Only one. I wish it were more. I cornered one once in Charis, but I haven't been able to find one since." There is a deep regret in the kobold's high pitched voice. "Witches are evil." Haldor scratched his head. "In that case, so are men, elves, dwarves - everything's bloody evil. Your job's a waste of time. Singling out one group and then 'hunting' it is helping nobody, witches are responsible only for a part of the evil done in this world, and many of 'em do a lot more good work than you ever will. You ought to rethink your career. How about hunting 'bad people', that generic and wide-ranging enough for you? Perhaps just 'people'? That's one group that sure gets around in being bastards." He continued leaning against the banister in a seated position, this way, the ship's constant yawing would have less of an effect.
CMP Posted December 6, 2013 Author Posted December 6, 2013 "Hmm, I see. So, with your unique skill set, what is your job on this vessel and on this voyage?" "I serve primarily in a magical advisory capacity. You've no idea the vast range of creatures lurking beneath the sea, or the things unwitting or foolish souls have carried aboard this ship. At one point I would manipulate the waves or the winds to better aid our journey, but my health has been...poor, as of late, and the weather less cooperative." "And on that note, I suggest everyone head belowdecks," recommended Illdria, as snow began to fall from the thick clouds onto the deck. "Winter's cold enough without the sea air on you, and you'll want to get comfortable. It'll be a bit of a trip." And a bit of a trip it was. For several days the party lingered around the interior of the Magpie or on the deck. The waters were calm for the first half of the voyage, but as the ship neared the Helvetian Sea, the waves became shorter and choppier. The frosted air weighed heavily on everyone's breath, while snow and ice sprinkled down from the sky almost regularly. A few hours into the fifth day of the trip, during the short period of time the sun's rays penetrated the mat of clouds hanging over the sky, the hobgoblin frequenting the ratlines waved down to the heroes currently on deck, and pointed north. "Hewoef, 'ou may wamf 'o fee fhis. 'Ehewe, up mowfh. Amyome haf a 'ewefope?"

CMP Posted December 6, 2013 Author Posted December 6, 2013 (edited) "Arx might be able to fly ahead and check it out, but if you need a telescope..." <I can try but it looks a bit far.> Out of 11 PCs, I just noticed exactly one of you has a Telescope, so... "Weww, af wom' af 'e 'oef'm 'ome 'oo cwof, 'e fouf be fime. Juf cwof emough 'o wook. Bu be cawfuw, wiwwe ome," added the hobgoblin, as Thormanil's tiny blue dragon took flight. A minute or so passed, and Arx, chilly but unharmed, returned to his master, having spotted half a dozen longships in the distance trying to prey upon a vessel flying the Bonaparte flag. swils Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Arx bundles himself in Thormanil's hood for warmth. Thormy scratched the hatchling's ears, congratulating him for his successful trip "Way to go li'l guy. Cold weather hasn't got anythin' on you! And I'm glad to hear we aren't dealing with Sirens, heh. Evil creatures, they are."
CMP Posted December 7, 2013 Author Posted December 7, 2013 Captain Illdria raised an eyebrow and stepped down onto the deck. "And just what is it we are dealing with?" Jules, leaning against one railing, took a glance at the dark, shaggy cat at his side, and peered off northward. "I believe the dragon spotted a skirmish. Vikings and-" "Bonapartes. Figures." By this time the Magpie was close enough to see the battle. One of the longships was already sinking, cannonball-riddled prow in the air as it slid beneath the freezing waters. But the others had thrown grappling hooks up onto the (relatively undamaged) Bonaparte ship, and raiders were already boarding the vessel. "Three wrecks underwater already. Bonies putting up a good fight, but won't last long. Angry nords tough enemy. Predictable, but tough shgrhngav." "Wait. Look south. I see a few smaller ships...not nords. Look like civilian vessels to me." Olmstyr looked between the fleeing ships and the battle a few times, and snorted. "These vikings are as shortsighted as they are vicious. This is a distraction if I've ever seen one. It looks like your 'Bonapartes' are giving them time to escape." "Hmph. How noble. Chalk up one more Bonie ship being sunk to a lack of common sense, I suppose." Illdria returned back to the helm. The hobgoblin frowned. "Cap'm, fhey'we 'oim 'o be kiwwef. Aww of fhem." "Your point being?" "Hmm. If we fire a few shots, we could get their attention, maybe sink one. Nords rarely back down from a challenge. I'm sure at least half will break off from the attack, then we can-" "And just what do we do owe these idiots? They're the ones out here in the first place. They chose to go full speed into a battle they couldn't win. Why should we be paying the price for it?" "Price? Hah! This ship full of warriors, though with dull blades and lazy bones. Need good fight to stay ready!" "...And if we're attacked, we'll get one. As it is, I see no reason to stick our necks out for Bonaparte. They've done nothing for us. Hell, they've tried to do stuff against us." "Not that ship." "Details." What will the party do?
swils Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 "I've got no loyalties to the Bonapartes, and I don't wanna get a bad name with the local raiding parties while we're stuck at sea."
