Gee Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Roger. Also seems to me that it has a slight tilt toward the front due to the different type of tyres. This can't help with traction either. Quote
Sariel Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 It's hard to imagine that TLG introduced a new worm gear just to change the angle of a meaningless spoiler on a B-model. I imagine it will be used for something much more important in the 2nd half. Don't forget the new worm gear is important for the front loader in the Construction Crew. It's used in a space where the old one wouldn't fit. Quote
Blakbird Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Not that I have noticed. It's much heavier and seems to have poor traction in the back because of being front-heavy. You must have the spoiler adjusted wrong. Needs more downforce. And cowbell. Don't forget the new worm gear is important for the front loader in the Construction Crew. It's used in a space where the old one wouldn't fit. I didn't know about that! Makes much more sense now. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 That is a interesting way to make the central pivot. Quote
Blakbird Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Is there any reason the old worm gear wouldn't have worked in this same application? Quote
skppo Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 That is a interesting way to make the central pivot. It's one of the strongest ways to do it at this size. I once tried it in a wheel hub design for heavy vehicles, worked pretty well. Would recommend. I wonder how the new worm gears wil be used in the future by the masterminds in here. Quote
Jim Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Is there any reason the old worm gear wouldn't have worked in this same application? Guess it would have worked, looking at the dimension. Which means that the actual reason for creating this part is yet to be discovered. 2H Flagship for example. Edit: maybe it would have been too close to the 1x2 Liftarm. Quote
Junpei Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Ohhh... so if I'm interpreting what you're saying right, this worm gear can fit between two liftarms one stud apart? That would be most awesome. TLH Quote
allanp Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 No, there is a two stud gap there for it to fit. The reason for it may be a little mundane, like that it's easier to just push and axle into either end in order to align it in the right place than it is to slide in on a axle with a bush either side. There is less room for error I guess. However that seems a small reason for a mould when you lose the ability to have many of them together making a longer one and you also lose the ability for it to freely slide on the axle. Although never used in an official set as far as I know, both of these abilities were used in MOCs and I'm sure there are other parts they could have made that would have made for a better investment in a new mould. Maybe they have a long list of parts that were designed in the studded era which are an even number of suds wide which they gradually want to replace with a studless version an odd number of studs wide. Quote
Saberwing40k Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 If that were true, wouldn't we get a new 3L worm gear, instead of this stupid 1l one? However, I don't see them as doing that just because the part was designed in the studded era. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Unless the mold is wearing out, it makes not a whole lot of sense to just introduce a new part. Quote
Blakbird Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 The primary advantage I can see to a 1L worm gear is that it will mate with a rack gear better. The old one worked with a rack, but poorly since the threads are angled but the rack teeth are straight. The other advantage is that it is much easier for it to carry big thrust loads because it can be trapped by axles or axle pins and not slide. Quote
Gee Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Less teeth = less plastic = cheaper to make (or is this me being cynical?). Quote
Sariel Posted January 12, 2014 Author Posted January 12, 2014 Aaaaand finally the 42025 Hovercraft: Quote
rener Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Nice review, makes me want to build it ASAP. Can your hamster (is it a hamster?) actually get out if the cargo doors are closed? Would make a nice cage for him! Quote
Sariel Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 He can squeeze through the bar on the prow's lower side, just like he did with the door open. Hamsters are very squeezable ;) Quote
jantjeuh Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Just wondering Sariel, what do you think of the cargo plane without the stickers applied? Won't it look very plain? I detest stickers, and never apply them. Edited January 13, 2014 by jantjeuh Quote
Sariel Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) I've seen it without stickers and it looks better than I expected - it shows some nice shapes. I've never quite understood all the hatred towards stickers - you can take them off at any moment if you have problem with them. Of course, with a set that has over 50 of those it's not going to be easy. Edited January 13, 2014 by Sariel Quote
jantjeuh Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) Well I've had bad experience taking off stickers in the past.. lots of glue residue sticking to the parts, which is almost impossible to get off quickly. Maybe nowadays they use a better glue formula. Edited January 13, 2014 by jantjeuh Quote
Sariel Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 Maybe. In my experience, the current stickers come off clean if you just peel them off slowly at a very sharp angle. Quote
D3K Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Don't forget the new worm gear is important for the front loader in the Construction Crew. It's used in a space where the old one wouldn't fit. I built it with a normal worm drive, with a half stud on either end, worked flawlessly Also, great reviews! Buffering the Hovercraft now Quote
Blakbird Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Maybe. In my experience, the current stickers come off clean if you just peel them off slowly at a very sharp angle. Stickers come off cleanly as long as they are "fresh". As they age due to UV exposure and become brittle, they also become very difficult to remove and leave behind a lot of residue. Unfortunately, this is also the time during which you are most likely to want to remove them. As has been discussed before on Eurobricks, the Williams racer and Silver Champion have a bad case of this problem. I was hoping newer models had solved the problem with better quality stickers, but I see that my 8258 stickers are currently in the process of disintegrating as well. Quote
rener Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Sariel, are you going to make a video review of 42024's B-model too? It seems interesting and has more (real) functions than the A-model. Still doubting of I should buy it though... Quote
Lakop Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I'm liking the cargo plane a lot. Those white parts will come in handy and i'm sure we'll be seeing mocs made with those white parts in the near future. H Quote
