UsernameMDM Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 "You're certainly not a hostage, but you're not going to do anything to jeopardize the security of that bridge. Hauling off in a rage to slaughter those that are peacefully returning the king will indeed jeopardize that bridge, which belongs to two kingdoms, not your god. Your father hired Hewyrt, and he hired us. You get in our way, you are interfering with your father's orders. I don't care what you do when Hewyrt releases us from our contract, but as long as we are here, you will not get in the way. We will leave as one. If your father is not returned alive and in good health, I will gladly join my force with yours to attack the orcs." Quote
Zepher Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 "I have suffered insult long enough. I wished to go free my father, Heweyrt and King Speros told me no. I wanted the Nords out of my city. I was told no. I am a Prince. I am a leader. How can my people respect me if I bow down to everything that moves?" Prince David stares Hoke in the eye. "You and your female Paladin seem very used to giving orders, and are surprisingly bad at receiving them. Step aside or I will call my guards." Quote
UsernameMDM Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 (edited) "You aren't paying me. Doesn't look like you're strong enough if you have to call your guards to fight your battles. Wise men win the fight even before the sword is drawn. And those your words that cross your lips or has this Warrior Priest beguiled you?" Hoke glances over to Hewyrt. "What say you? Step aside or hold fast? And a straight answer from your mouth and not a flickering of a forked tongue." Edited March 20, 2014 by UsernameMDM Quote
Zepher Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 "I do not have to outfight my own men. I must make sure they believe in me enough to fight to protect their countrymen. I do not even carry a sword. Do you think that I am so easily swayed by every man who advises me. Heweyrt has himself been an 'advisor' to me, though his advice on the Nords and Orcs has clearly been woeful." Heweyrt shrugs in almost apathetic apology to David before turning to Hoke. "It wouldn't look particularly good if we slaughtered the young Prince in the Temple, and it seems like if he stays alive, he means to leave." Heweyrt smiles. "Too flicky tounged for you, probably. It is my professional opinion that... detaining a Prince from his wishes at the center of his own city is foolish. So, if he's trying to go, I say let him go." "Heweyrt, you never think it's time for a fight, he he he. I say skin him and see if the Lord of Light steps in to stop us." "I'm sure there'll be time for fighting later," Heweyrt says sharply to Gocklo, but shoots Hoke a meaningful glance. Quote
UsernameMDM Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Hoke steps aside. After the Princes and his entourage leave, Hoke draws close to Hewyrt and speaks to him in a low voice. "If it was the plan for the Prince to leave all this time, which I would not have killed him, why did you give us that disconcerting look?" Quote
Chromeknight Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Consider your words carefully Raguel. You say 'The Lord of Light has had enough bowing' and 'we will not bow'. Are you confusing your own cause with that of your Lord's? I fear for you. You have said that The Lord of Light is also Lord of shadows. But that is not true. The Texts say he dwells in unapproachable light and the Lord of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. She speaks clearly and directly to Prince David, again mustering her diplomacy. I say to you. If you do this it is not done in the will of the Light. Destroying the bridge which so many have died for would be to cast a shadow across this land. Let us Go together, to welcome your father home. Bow before him, your King. And leave aside talk of taking the bridge by force, for that path is darkness not light. Quote

UsernameMDM Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 If there is nothing to be done, and the Prince is going to leave short of us killing him, can we just move onto the next thing? I'm sure if anyone else had anything to say they would have chimed in by now. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 (Hey! Timezones!) "A Prince would have never sat mumbling in a temple when his father was captured. A Prince would take no order bar that of his king. You let yourself be ordered by a god, -alledgedly- through the mouth of a priest, by men you could have overruled in a moment." Tesni shrugged. UsernameMDM Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Tesni quirked a brow at the little prince and his expression. There was never any point arguing with zealots or trying to intimidate anyone in the thrall of a god, maybe once she would have tried but it seemed unlikely to bear fruit here. (Hey! Timezones!) Zepher Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 OoC: I like to play the moment - I was having fun! "If it was the plan for the Prince to leave all this time, which I would not have killed him, why did you give us that disconcerting look?" "I was sharing a bemused look with my friends. I'm sorry, I forgot that it may confused the stoic stone-faced heroes of Heroica." Consider your words carefully Raguel. You say 'The Lord of Light has had enough bowing' and 'we will not bow'. Are you confusing your own cause with that of your Lord's? I fear for you. You have said that The Lord of Light is also Lord of shadows. But that is not true. And leave aside talk of taking the bridge by force, for that path is darkness not light. "The Lord of Light speaks through many texts and many prophets. And I have no cause but my Lord's." "I am not a fool, Nerwen. I do not plan to destroy the bridge, simply claim it for when my father returns." "Go gather the troops, David. Find men loyal to the light." Prince David nods to Raguel, makes a half-bow awkwardly to the heroes before catching himself, and then steps out of the room. Raguel turns to the heroes. "Do not think that I will be afraid to strike down the darkness." Raguel hurries out of the room too. Heweyrt turns to the heroes. "Well, sounds like we need to go to the bridge. The situation, as I see it, is not dire. I believe that he will spare Chief Byrne, and if it comes to it, the Chief can defend himself. And I doubt that David plans to keep the bridge forever, especially once his father returns - he is likely to convince David otherwise. The only worry, for the time being, is what the Orcs and King Speros will think when they see a show of force approaching. Everyone is a little... high strung, today." Are the heroes ready to depart the city? Quote
Flare Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 "Lets move on to the bridge with haste - we must arrive there to make sure that the puppet prince doesn't do anything rash." Quote

Zepher Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 (edited) The heroes step out of the Temple. The city remains in chaos, but troops are beginning to rally. Heweyrt leads the heroes to a stable. The stableboy lays stabbed. His mouth his open, his eyes are wide. Heweyrt shakes his head sadly. He releases a few horses and the heroes saddle up. Gocklo hops up behind Nerwen and settles in comfortably. Heweyrt looks at the heroes. "Heroes, I will reconnect with you shortly. I want to go have a word with Chief Byrne - tell him that if he is done negotiating, it may be in his best interest to evacuate the city while his head is still attached to his body. Gocklo, look after them. Protect the bridge at all costs. Remember, while I may not think that it's smart to engage David alone, beating him in combat isn't out of the question." The heroes leave the city. The bridge is a short ride, and they make their way in silence. About halfway there, Gocklo pokes Nerwen in the back. "He he he. Sorry to break your concentration. Thought you might be interested to know that we're being followed." Nerwen turns around and sees that they are indeed being followed by a few horsemen. Edited March 21, 2014 by Zepher Quote
Peppermint_M Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 "So, we halt and chat or are they the sort more likely to steal the beasts from under us, give them a dye job and swear blind they raised 'em from foal?" Tesni chuckled to Gocklo. Quote
UsernameMDM Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hoke turns and faces the followers and addresses them with Diplomacy: "What are you about? We have no time for games. If it's steel you want to taste we have plenty of it. If not, be on your way along another route." Quote
Chromeknight Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 (edited) Careful where you put those hands Kobold. Nerwen turns to check on the riders, trying to pick out if they are soldiers of one of the kingdoms, Nords or mercenaries of some faction. Not seeing (being told of) any obvious markings, she swiveled back to Hoke. Ignore them. If they mean us harm, it will become clear. Our duty is at the bridge, not in back alleys. Edited March 22, 2014 by Chromeknight Quote
UsernameMDM Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 "Agreed. That's why I am directing them to go down a back alley. If their intention is to do us harm, I would rather not dance around with a verbal exchange and just be done with it. If not, hopefully they will just be on their way." Quote

Tesni chuckled to Gocklo. "Isn't that how most people are? He he he." Hoke turns and faces the followers and addresses them with Diplomacy: "What are you about? We have no time for games. If it's steel you want to taste we have plenty of it. If not, be on your way along another route." The horses and their riders, apparently more experienced than the heroes, catch up with them. They have billowing red capes and shiny steel armor. Their leader calls to Hoke. "Hello there!" cries the impossibly mustached man. "We mean no harm, of course, we are here to protect you! My name is Sir Bolivar! I am in charge of the Sons and Daughters of Light." He gestures to the men and women around him. They also all wear confident smiles, but the heroes notice that they have practically encircled them, and they have their hands on their hilts. "We were sent here by Raguel. He was afraid that you may get lost on the way to the bridge." "How did he want us to phrase it, Cassandra?" "If you insist on going to the bridge, it will be in our presence." "I will lead the way!" The heroes have no choice but to follow the Sons and Daughters of Light, as they have been surrounded. The soldiers shepherd them forward on rocky ground, their horses hooves clattering. Gocklo pokes Nerwen in the back again and whispers. "Look at that over there, he he he!" he says with glee, and points behind them. At their back Nerwen can barely, barely, see the river. The horsemen are leading the heroes in the complete wrong direction. What will they do? Quote
