"Well wasn't quite expecting to make it out, but seems like we pulled through all right. The wagon?"

"Ruined sir, torn to bits in the battle."

"Looks like a good bit of the stuff is still salvageable though, I'll see what I can do."

Glup grabbed Matthias's hand and stood to her feet.

Purpearl notices the circus troupe gathering together and approaches them. "Good to see everyone's ok, Borris, Mirona." After which Purpearl follows the circus troupe to salvage whatever's left of the wagon.

Matthias indicates King Valentino with a glance. "I would hope that it will be many years before David comes once again to power. King Valentino, who wants peace, will have those years to discipline his son. Raguel is the one responsible for the slaughter; the prince may be excused for Raguel's evil guidance."

I stood against you and your forces because I did not want you to commit the same grievous acts as those you wish to call to account. Regarding that accounting what you have asked is not entirely ours to give. Take Raguel's head, though what use you will find for it I do not know. No one will burn with shame and dishonour that you have it. David is still using his head, and I hope that now the apostate paladin is gone he will use it for better things. We cannot release those held as slaves. But this prince can. When he stands I will counsel him to do exactly that, he will need his head for that though.

"You speak like the fool is metal to be molded and forged. It takes more than a stern lecture to change a man. If anything I would think his fellows being killed would strengthen his resolve, but perhaps you humans are different."

Somewhere in the battle, Guts froze. He simply petrified. At the horrors in front of him, the realization that this whole venture had been bloody and pointless. The realization that there would always be people like Nerwen that would justify their decrepit actions with good intentions. The realization that he would never do anything good. Never make a difference. The world needs men like Guts, but did not want them. Finally now, the old raider was coming to his senses. And he broke.

"I... I... It's over Tarvalk. This bridge... It's a deathtrap, you can't take this bridge by force, it will topple. The Orcs... I tried to make them see.... I'm sorry okay, I tried. I... I should not be here. We need to leave now."

I'll take whatever share, as consumable, I'd like a smelling salts or emergency essence. Thanks for reviving Guts!

"....I see."

Tarvalk paused, still breathing heavily. Olmstyr shot a frown at Guts.

OoC: According to my calculations, Benji should have earned about 149 gold from Overkill

"I'll accept whatever loot that is offered to me." Benji mentioned gruffly, while greedily eying the huge pile of gold.

I believe Thormanil should have an extra 0.25 exp gained (0.25*2*3, 35.25->36.75, rather than 36.5)

"You speak like the fool is metal to be molded and forged. It takes more than a stern lecture to change a man. If anything I would think his fellows being killed would strengthen his resolve, but perhaps you humans are different."

"No, not metal, but a son. And hopefully not a fool either," Matthias begins, but is interrupted by Guts' rambling.

"I... I... It's over Tarvalk. This bridge... It's a deathtrap, you can't take this bridge by force, it will topple. The Orcs... I tried to make them see.... I'm sorry okay, I tried. I... I should not be here. We need to leave now."

Surprised by the raider's sudden change of demeanor, Matthias doesn't know what to say. Is this the same hero who moments earlier was ordering him and others to sacrifice themselves in battle? The same man who had so much vile anger towards the paladins?

"I don't envy you heroes. I'll say that much."

Matthias shakes his head, downcast. "We have worked and fought here," he looks to the circus troupe, "and across Baltarok for peace. The Orcs and the Kingdoms might both be in mourning or burning to the ground had not at least a few leaders on each side had that same dream. Let this bridge and this peace stand or tear it down - as you said, 'Many orcs died here', but the hand that drove them was not ours. For now, I can agree with Master Holla that it is time for us to leave. If you truly desire peace, we cannot provide it for you. I am sure Heroica might send diplomatic mediators, but we cannot give you a peace you do not want." With that, the gnome walks away from Valentino, Hoke, Guts, Nerwen, and Tarvalk, moving to help the circus troupe recover whatever was left of their wagon, livelihood, and lives.

Guts shook his head.

"There will be no peace. This bridge. It needs to be destroyed, the Kingdoms will not leave the orcs be, never, not as long as their leadership is passed down from craven father to craven son. We need to blow this thing up. We should... An armed standoff is better than constant war."

The irony being that I suggested this a while ago. Seems you need to do through hell before you get half a wise head on your shoulders.

"I'll face down any danger you please, but I am not doing that ever again."

Dreyrugr stretches his arms as he heads over to the cirus troupe. "Next time you want to do something political make sure you have a back door so you don't get caught in the middle of a war, although I guess we needed to be here anyway. Nice to see none of you became casualties. I'll take back that sword if you don't mind Mirona."

Misguided? He nearly started a war! A war that would have been long, bloody, and heavily damaging on both sides. That's not the act of an 'impressionable youth', it's the act of a criminal who needs to be punished justly.

Hoke points to the slain bodies of the orc warriors and states in a plain tone, "Again, the same can be said for the orcs. I did not seen any reason or peaceful intentions on their side. If you cannot see that, then you are a blind naive fool. There is no 'good' side in this conflict, just flawed people."

Guts shook his head.

"That would solve nothing. There was war long before this bridge was here. There needs to be peace. At least King Valentino wants peace. What about the orcs? What about Grishnod?"

Hoke looks about again at the bodies, the blood, the brokenness.

"Another battle is not the answer. Another fight is not the cure. This region needs peace that comes from mutual respect and understanding."

"I think that all the orc slaves should be returned from the kingdoms, then the orcs can decide if they want to keep or destroy the bridge. Personally, I think we need to destroy it. When there are two groups like this that have been fighting for years over a trivial concept of 'so and so's ancestors many years ago attacked first' or 'he enslaved them' or whatever, there will probably be no peace. Nerwen shrugged.

Compared to elves, people change all the time, and yet also are so short lived as to hardly change at all.

If we had not stood on the bridge in your way would that still be true, or would Orcs have set foot in the Kingdoms beyond the bridge intending to burn a capital?

Nerwen raises a hand

Never mind, you did not, whatever the reason. The kingdoms sent forces into your land and killed and destroyed. You are owed compensation and restitution. You have named a price, one that, I note, does not include destroying the bridge. I have declared my intent to see it paid, we need only wait for Valentino and David to speak.

Nerwen's voice is calm, measured and diplomatic.

King Valentino looks at the Orc cooly.

13515255945_e794f86de9_t.jpg

"I will assume, as I don't recognize you, that you are not one of the Orcs that has had me under lock and key for these last few years. And so also I will hope you are a reasonable one. My son had no ill blood towards the Orcs when last I saw him. I can only hope that it has come upon him recently, and that I can exorcise it just as quickly as it was implanted in him." The King looks at his son, he has begun to stir. "That does not excuse what he did today. But I am his father. Do you have a son or daughter, Orc? And if I were to demand his or her head, could you give it to me, regardless of what they'd done?" Valentino turns next to the Paladin.

"This one..." he sighs. "I cannot condemn to death. But I have no forces on the bridge. If the heroes were to not defend him, I will not stop you."

And, as if on cue, the very bloody and faint Raguel staggers to his feet. He has dropped his sword, leans only on his staff. He does not look at the Orcs, does not look at Valentino. He glances only first at David, and exhales sharply seeing him alive. He turns next to the heroes.

"Heroes," he says, looking directly at Nerwen. "I do not understand your rage. But I must ask you, before you murder me, what crime did I commit? Advising young David? Or was it defending David when Nords razed our city? Or perhaps it was, in your mind, going to greet Valentino, to ensure his safe return. This is not a war party," he gestures to the bodies on the ground. "Thirty odd soldiers, and an unarmed Prince? We had no plans of invasion. It was only when I saw the Orc party on the opposite shore that we took to arm. They were coming here to kill us. And for what? For a crime that a Prince in a different Kingdom committed. Our people are reeling from their city being burned earlier today, can they really suffer another attack?"

"What do you think?" asks Heweyrt, looking at the heroes he hired.

The circus troupe gathers a little to the side on the edge of the heated debate.

Dreyrugr stretches his arms as he heads over to the cirus troupe. 11165366485_f549e88af3_t.jpg

"Sure." Mirona tossed the Dreyrugr's sword back to him before turning to Baradock. "You going to be alright?"

Borris sifted through the remnants of the wagon.

11459941035_ff877ea9f4_t.jpg

"Not a lot we can do about it, we'll pack up what we can, but it looks like we'll be traveling light once again, gents."

Nelvyn turns to Purple and smiles.

"Aside from trying to have my party and myself killed?"

"I am not calling for your death, nor will I carry out an order to execute you. However, if your path is the just path, then there should be no reason that you and you alone shouldn't be able to take care of these remaining orcs. I will not defend you from these orcs, and I doubt anyone else here will after the 'hospitality' you showed us."

Haldor stepped forwards from his shadowed position at the edge of the bridge. His clothes were filthy and stained with all manner of horrors that befall the bridge that day. Of all things, he felt relief. Despite the bloody events of the past hours, at least young David had lived - even if to be executed soon. The nord hadn't slain a monarch, after all - at least he could not be held responsible for a bloody and vicious end to the heir.

The nord watched for a while, not making his presence known until he had heard what the others had to say. Finally, he spoke.

d093b824-aa19-41a6-b486-c7d322f1cdb9_zps7dfc22ad.jpg

"Those are words. I ask you again, what crime did I commit that warrants my death?"

"I know nothing of you or the other kingdoms, but it's seems pretty bloody foolish to hold you to account for the actions of other kingdom. The Four Boulders, do they have a man here we can have a chat with? If anyone's head needs to be taken, it's whoever ordered that attack - not you. Like I say, you could be a right bastard for all I know, but from where I'm standing, you're not our man."

He turned solemnly to Tarvalk, saluting with his gored weapon as he did so.

"Tarvalk, you must see that these are not even from the same realm as those whom we saw in Imaestym. David is prince of the Red Lizards, he should be held to account for these evens no more than should any man for his neighbour. These men are responsible for the deaths of no more orcs than the idiotic bloody Marga condemned to death with her archaic rituals. I respect you like a hole in the head for what you are prepared to do for your lands, but I will find my respect misplaced if you cannot tell when forgiveness and using your head are the only options you've got."

He wiped his bloody face on a sleeve, looking around.

"What of Bastala? Does she walk? I'll be pretty pissed if another's fallen today."

Posted

"As long as the High Kingdoms continue to plead innocent, there is no solution. Not while there are those that would stand by them in the High Kingdom's arrogance." Guts glared at Nerwen. "This is pointless. It seems the one that was right all along was Marga of all people."

Posted (edited)

David is prince of the Red Lizards, he should be held to account for these evens no more than should any man for his neighbour.

Guts got some, and only some of the fire back in his eyes, perhaps the Orcish cause was not lost. If blood was not the price of blood, perhaps something else could be. He grabbed his intimidating stick. "Heh. You speak as though the Kingdoms would care about the different Orcish Clans. You know this to be not so. Were the roles reversed, and the orcs razed one of the Kingdoms' cities. The result would not be anything like what we have now. This bridge let that war party through. Valentino did. I say Valentino answers for his crime by proxy, the destruction of Imaestym and the murders that took place there, as will Raguel and the boy David. Trials, of course, chopping off heads is pointless at this point. In return the Orcs will not attack the humans, they'll sign a peace treaty. This bridge will be destroyed, it's a human tool of war, and you already admitted that it was unsafe. If a few soldiers can make it topple, trading wagons can never cross it. The Orcs will be free to raise vessels and start actively trading by sea, unhindered by the Kingdoms in this matter. One old man's head does little to put the burned and hanged to rest and soothe the anger of those left behind. More is needed to pay for peace."
