I broke down and ordered one from Best Buy.

Hm, but seems that there is no Lone Ranger in the new 2014 catalog (http://ipaper.ipapercms.dk/LEGO/BrandCatalog/nl_nl/1HY2014/).

The Lone Ranger sets were a 'once and gone' range, meaning that they were only ever going to be around for one season.

Have built this with my kids now. It's a pretty good set. It's never going to please an AFOL foamer, but...

• if you have kids they'll get a few hours of fun out of this one, mine are two and four and have played with it for a couple of days
  
• no batteries needed
  
• crashing is encouraged
  
• good play value: exploding rock, collapsing water tower, exploding box car, hide a minifig in the tender, rotating gatling gun, posable horse
  
• the train doesn't aim for 100% realism, but it's pretty nicely designed as a toy, the colours and details it has are attractive and it's solidly built
  

It's a shame the film bombed - this is the kind of £79 unpowered train set that (as a parent) TLG should be offering imo. High play value, lots of nice parts if they want to rebuild it. If you have two kids who will both play with this, £79 for this is a fair price. Non-franchised, losing a couple of minifigs, it could be cheaper (£65?).

For AFOLs, if you saw this remaindered on discount, (I don't care about this stuff, but I hopefully I've figured out what motivates AFOLs) you get:

• 6 large train wheels, 4 with flanges, 2 without
  
• 8 wheelsets, (~£10 on bricklink)
  
• cowcatcher
  
• brass-effect bell
  
• oval of track including 4 straights
  
• 7 buffers and couplings (~£5 on bricklink)
  
• a range of nice parts in dark green, same green as Emerald Night
  
• some useful black roof slopes
  
• a box car and flat car which are well designed and easily adapted to suit your taste
  
• perfectly functional simple water tower
  
• posable white horse
  
• a stack of good greeble parts: tan bush, dynamite, silver gems, a bunch of cheese and other slopes in ground colours.
  
• a bunch of minifigs and weapons and stuff that you could bricklink, or trade or give away
  

This is an under-rated set, and if I see one at TrU on discount, I'd buy another for parts. Unless you get there first

I ended up using the parts from my spare Constitution set to make another Emerald Night loco and tender. They share many of the same parts. Only ended up spending $70 to bricklink the parts I needed. It pulls the gun car and jail car, and have the bonus extras of the oval track, rock, and water tower which look great in the setup.

I'm glad I picked all of these up when they first came out otherwise I probably would have missed the whole theme. It seems like no sites had that many of the sets anyway and I had never seen the train in a store until I saw it at tj maxx recently.

You've both got good points on why this would be good to pick up! I think one thing that holds people back from this set is just how awesome the Emerald Night is in comparison. If this had come out in 2008, people would have been very impressed I think.

Yeah as long as you have a decent supply of plates, tiles, etc., and don't care about being 100% match to the EN parts list, you don't have to spend as much.

the major parts you can share:

Some 2x4 roof slopes for the EN body (they don't have the gold piping, but doesn't matter)

Tender wheels

Couplers

Flanged wheels

Many green and black bricks and plates

rigid black hose (not very long, but can be adapted for use)

Bricks with technic holes

Windows (brown, but same size)

some plates, cheese slopes, technic pins, clips, bricks with side studs, brackets, shovel, gold round studs

I have noticed that most of the Lone Ranger sets have disappeared from many of the department, toy, and Lego stores I have visited since new years. I did find a few of the Constitution at a local Wal-Mart for $89.99 but at none of the other stores I have visited.

So if you are looking to pick this set up I would recommend doing it soon before they are all gone.

Did someone try to extend the train? I built my version at Christmas and found it a little bit to small. But I don't know exactly how to extend the train in a proper way. With jail cars? With the gun car?

As for the stock cars that come in the set, I have a tough time thinking of the two axles as legit cars. I extended the jail car with about $15 worth of parts, the most expensive part being the train base. I robbed the extra wheels from the gun car.

You can try buying two jail cars but you won't have enough of the reddish brown wall bricks, I think it comes up a bit short by a few bricks. And you will need two of the 4x6 plates with technic pins for the trucks.

Otherwise it's fairly simple, should look something like this with the barn door and 6 jail bars. Once my BL order comes in with the correct bricks, it should fit nicely with the Constitution loc.

I have one, but I found some more in the Müller store in Zagreb for 62€ (!) and I bought two one for spare parts and the other as I could not resist... My grandson was very happy about the steam machine (plus one electric car to operate the whole train with RC) but said as there is no piston on the loco, I and did the most simple thing, just attached two nine-hole bars to wheels; it works perfectly

Keep looking in the UK. Argos have been selling it at £49.99 usually one or two per store. They are beginning to run out now, as HukD'ers snap them up.

Haven't seen much LR stuff here in the US Midwest since Xmas (when it was heavily discounted at TRU and the Lego Shop).

I think I witnessed the last gasp of LR 'round these parts at Wal-Mart today. They had a couple train sets at 50% off (plus tax). I couldn't resist picking up another one, lots of nice parts. Wish I could find the mine at that price.

I haven't seen the movie, and don't really care for licensed products, but LR was a nice theme. It's too bad we didn't get a second wave, I was kind of hoping for a Fort Legoredo redux.
