I noticed on Shop.lego.com that some technic sets - notably 8110, 9396, and 9397 are retiring soon. Does anyone know how that usually works? Is that window a few months? Or do they basically remove them rather quickly to make way for the first wave of 2014 sets?

Basically, how long to have to watch for deals on those two before I just have to bite the bullet and snap them up?

Thanks Guys.

Hard to say. Sometimes the sets will go to the sale section, but sometimes they don't. The only Technic sets I recall seeing in the sale section were the 8258 Crane Truck, 8043 Excavator, and 8041 Race Truck. All of those sets sold out quick once they hit the sale page. IIRC, the Crane Truck and Excavator were only available for about 1/2 day once they hit the sale page.

If you really want a set, I'd suggest you just go ahead and buy it. Waiting for a sale that you could easily miss isn't worth it, especially if it's a set you really want. All the sets you mentioned are good sets too.

Just my $.02.

The whole concept of 'retiring' should not apply to lego, older sets could be ordered in parts or something.

Although, most of the time, the parts remain available, the sets do retire!

Unimog wheels aren't used in any other set (yet), so they will become rare (eventually) after the set retires. Unless they are used in a new set of course.

I am planning on grabbing 8110 after Christmas but this is locally and I know two retailers have it in stock. I always think it is best to grab sets when you can, you never know when they might get sold out.

Hm... I might have to blow the 2013 lego budget. I'd really like to have one of each, possibly two or three unimogs... I always watch for deals, but I may have to go for retail price this time.

I know ;o; I've gotten 2 Unimog as of now, but would get more if it's still around in 2-3 months. No budget for now @___@

I think it means they aren't producing new ones at factories and they'll sell off whatever stock they have left in inventory. How quickly things sell out will depend on the popularity of model and if there will be deep discounts. Lately it seems like people will snap up any LEGO set on sale. Waiting too long for a set you really must have can end up being a missed opportunity.

I have experienced this myself first hand, missed out on a half price 8070 by 30 seconds :(
