Posted December 16, 201311 yr I bought a whole bunch of 80ies lego a few months ago. I now have the hospital (http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=6380-1) and a fire station (http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=6382-1). I would like to put them in my Lego layout for the kids to play with, but it would be nice if they looked a bit more modern. Is there anyone here who has pimped their old sets to make them look more modern. Any ideas ? Thanks a bunch.
December 17, 201311 yr I was able to rebuilt my old Main Street (6390) for my kids. I left it just as it was. I look at it this way: if my kids are going to build their own stuff, the simpler old-school designs might provide a clearer roadmap than their newer sets.
December 17, 201311 yr Hi bartvdpoel It really could be interesting to see the results of this project - and other suggestions. When I get space for my layout, it will be built up by many classic models. I would like to expand/upgrade them, but still try to keep as close to the original look as possible, though. I guess more people have tried this, but just one building came to my mind. The good old 6365 Summer Cottage that has been rebuild in LDD. You can see the result in this thread. In the thread our fellow SalvoBrick refers to some remakes of two named models, namely the 4554 Metro Station and 1620 Chocolate Factory. The links he provides are not active anymore, though, and I cannot think of which models he is referring to. Let's hope he will take a look here, and can still remember which sets he was talking about. /Laka
December 17, 201311 yr I have the old Hospital too and my DD loves it - we rebuilt that and the ambulance, but she found the ambulance really small compared to the City one so we scrapped it for parts. The hospital itself is mostly intact, but we've 'friendzified' it by adding the taller glass curved parts and some of the darker blue you can pick up with the Pet Salon. I find the Friends shops with larger panels and big glass windows are really fun for kids to remodel older sets. The way they are built for playability is the way your kids will build things - roofless buildings, half buildings, buildings with parts not fixed to the baseplate. Take a look at those (even if you have boys) for your building inspiration.
December 17, 201311 yr Author Thanks for the suggestions. I just finished my Lego attic and am looking forward to a nice christmas holiday. I'll keep you guys posted. The chocolate factory looks nicely dutch, never saw it before. It was a promo set of Nutricia, which makes Chocolat-milk , chocomel, in Dutch. That you can make a small house like that look exactly and unmistakably like an Amsterdam "Grachtenpand" with only 1978 blocks is amazing. Nice find !
December 17, 201311 yr I took the 4554 Metro Station and decided it looked a bit feeble and anemic in comparison to some of the modern sets. So, I increased the height by a couple of rows of bricks and extended it out to get to this.. <Skeleton not included>. Then I decided I'd reuse the pieces to Modularise it and it became.... ...the Metro Station Wine bar Full pictures and evolution of the wine bar in this thread http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=78161 What I found is that whatever you build, you'll probably change it into something else... Have fun!
