Posted December 16, 201311 yr Set no: 75034 Year released:2014 Minifigs: 4 (2 Death star Gunners and 2 Royal Guard) Pieces: 100 Price: 149 SEK, ?USD, ? Euro Got this set today in the mail. Thought I woud do a short Review of it. To start with, the front of the box: DST01 by mordatre, on Flickr And the back showing some play features: DST02 by mordatre, on Flickr On the side Lego advertise their new blaster instead of showing a minifig in scale 1:1 : DST03 by mordatre, on Flickr We get 2 bags and one instruction booklet: DST04 by mordatre, on Flickr Inside the booklet we are shown some action features again: DST05 by mordatre, on Flickr Parts in bag 1.. DST06 by mordatre, on Flickr and in bag 2. Not much, but at least it´s useful parts. DST07 by mordatre, on Flickr The star of the show! The spanking new Death Star Gunner. Very detailed and it´s love at first sight. The head is useful in other scenarios, the torso and legs look cool and will find usage elswehere. The helmet is perfect. Conclusion: You can never have too many Death Star Gunners. :) DST08 by mordatre, on Flickr The new Royal Guard: Even if we wanted a navy trooper or storm trooper instead of 2 identical Royal Guards, this figure is, at least to me a great update to an already good looking figure. Dark red arms do make it look more like the one from the Movie. But I noticed at first when I put the cape on that it had 2 different shades of red. The dark red inner side is a bit more rubber/plasic/glossier than the standard red outside. Their Force pikes are of course silly, a black lightsaber hilt would be more fitting. Their heads are black, without Printing. DST09 by mordatre, on Flickr New blaster! Well, it does fire further than you might think. As long as the stud of the projectile isn´t hollow it can fire anything. I won´t use these blasters for my troops, but as fellow builder Larry Lars pointed out at his flickr page; use you imagination! There are a number of possible combinations for this new piece and I welcome it. With all them Battle packs I will buy I´ll end up with a whole bunch of these blasters. DST010 by mordatre, on Flickr Complete set and some extras. Well 10 of the 1x1 round plates are for ammunition, and you´ll need it once you start playing with the new blasters. :) DST011 by mordatre, on Flickr DST012 by mordatre, on Flickr Conclusion: BUY IT! Or wait a couple of months and then get the Death Star Troopers from BL.
December 17, 201311 yr Thanks for the review mordatre! Looks like a fun set and those Death Star Gunners look stunning! So excited to try out those new stud-shooters. Edited December 17, 201311 yr by Kaijumeister
December 17, 201311 yr I am now looking forward to some blasters, just because of that picture of what you did with them, I think they both look amazing, especially the second one, and they use the sets own pieces too, I will definitely be doing that, so thank you a lot for inspiration.
December 17, 201311 yr Thank you for the review! I loved this set from the beginning! Can't wait to pick it up!
December 17, 201311 yr Thanks for the Review Mordatre! This is certainly the only set I might be getting next year.
December 17, 201311 yr Excellent figures, odd cannon and finally we might have hope for those silly blasters.....modify them......mmm, RPG ! Thanks for the small review 'mordatre' !
December 17, 201311 yr Minfigs will go great with the death star and My kids will like the weapons, I can see a lot of lost 1x1 round plates, under cupboards, fridges, pianos, fish tanks, bookshelves . . . . I wonder if this is the beginning of a wave of death star sets ? accumulating in a re-release of the death star ? hahaha
December 17, 201311 yr Thank you for the review, mordatre. I knew I was already going to buy a couple of these without question but this definately helps reaffirm my personal stance on it. I was actually curious with the new blasters in regards to if they really worked and/or what else one could use them for. Your image showing different mods for them is very intriguing.
December 17, 201311 yr Author Thanks all. As mentioned I only used pieces from the actual set in my blaster combinations. Here´s a photo from Larry Lars with some other brilliant combinations. Possibilities by Larry Lars, on Flickr Edited December 17, 201311 yr by mordatre
December 17, 201311 yr Those weapons are neat and all but don't solve the problem I have with them. They don't look anything like blasters and are far too thick and stuff.
December 17, 201311 yr Great review! Wow, this is a great battle pack. I even like the blasters! What's wrong with me?!
December 17, 201311 yr Hi "These are the sets we are looking for..." ;) This set is the highlight for me in this winter wave. New OT figs, that have never been released! And they are great. I am sure ovwr the years these battlepacks are going to be classics like the stormtrooper BP with small dropship. It is going to be the ONLY source for the great DS gunner and the only source for the new and improved guards. Who cares that those turbolasers should have been green instead of red? There might be red lasers on the DS but those that are always connected to the gunners are green. Regarding the new blasters: I am pretty sure the Lego designers who have been involved in the development of the new blaster will laughting their megablocks of ;) Adults are complaining or being upset regarding a kids toy. Its for kids! I dont like them either but again - its for kids ;) Nice from Lego to put so many ammo with these blasters. There is an Ebay seller in Germany that disassembly and parts out every SW set. He has often an auction with 50 blasters/unique SW guns for just a couple of Euros. Nobody wants them, until now ;) Dino
December 17, 201311 yr Nice review....I've not been blown away by the early 2014 releases but I really like this little group minifigs. And nice work on the alternatives for the blasters. It does raise my issue with TLG and their intent on over-scaling certain elements of their kits to satisfy the broader spectrum of Lego fans. I think as Star Wars races towards its 'Disney Destiny'...more and more of our SW sets are going to have more and more "features" and "interaction"...to be able to capture the kids market. Whilst I don't disagree with this (as Lego essentially is a toy at heart) I hope they don't leave behind the AFOL's and the Star Wars fans who grew up with the original trilogy, where HAN SHOT FIRST! :)
December 17, 201311 yr It does raise my issue with TLG and their intent on over-scaling certain elements of their kits to satisfy the broader spectrum of Lego fans. Hi i dont think this is over scaling. Regarding the scale of the new blaster this is the only or smalles scale possible. What else is smaller that would you try to shoot except a single (round) stud? The diameter (which is big) of the blaster is just a little bigger than the stud itself, but it has to be this way. I dont think there are many smaller pieces in the Lego world than a single round plate. And none of it are more common. So this is no oversizing by design purpose this is form follows function. Dino
December 17, 201311 yr Thanks for the review, this is a really fantastic set. The new Gunners look awesome, the Royal guards will be welcome as well, and I like the new blasters. A must buy IMO.

Dino Yeah I agree with that point...but the size of the blaster has been designed to shoot a single round plate, therefore function has definitely dictated form :) Im talking about accessories to match blasters from the star wars franchise, without the added 'functionality', which I also think is a cool design and great for interactive play, but not relevant to my needs as an AFOL. The Lone Ranger kits don't have 'single round plate' scaled revolver to shoot wee grey studs at each other. Still won't stop me buying the set though...and as demonstrated above, the new blaster can be modded into some awesome weaponry :)
December 17, 201311 yr So the Royal Guards have double sided capes? That makes them more attractive. Thanks for the review!
December 17, 201311 yr So the Royal Guards have double sided capes? That makes them more attractive. Thanks for the review! I like the new capes 2, but I'm not sure about the arms... The minifigures look good overall, but I will probably bricklink them somewhere in the future. Thank you for reviewing this set.
December 17, 201311 yr I can't wait to get my grubby mitts on a few of these BPs, the figs and the parts are well worth the price of admission this time around, I believe. Thanks for reinforcing the unique functionality of the new blasters, it's so nice to see how easily they can be modded. The two pairs of characters may be kind of redundant, but there is no point in complaining about it now. The fact is, my RGs will be getting simple Castle spears and I've got to figure out how to make a minifig -sized red snuggie for them.
December 17, 201311 yr That last one is just pure genius. -Sci Agreed, these blasters serve for many purposes. Now I can replace Robin's Batcave gun with something, useful. Is it just me or are these blasters getting better by the second? Can't wait to buy some an find great uses for them. I'm sure that Unikitties 1x1 stud with a hole in the middle would be able to serve great purposes in those too, but for now I cannot say.
December 17, 201311 yr Thanks for the review, I picked this up earlier in the week, the minfigs are really great, and the blasters are useful in (but not as SW blasters). The parts are pretty useful and in useful colours as well, so it was a nice buy.
December 17, 201311 yr Great review and focus on the blasters - you've answered a number of questions I had looking at the screenshots. I'm glad to see the DSG and Imperial Guards. I never picked up the latter, and the Former were always one of my favorite Vintage figures. I can't wait to add these guys to my forces -
