I love this idea, it's saving me several hundred dollars! I don't understand why it doesn't have more comments...

Probably because of the "dangit why didn't I think of that" factor  .

OR you could build a better engine for less than £20 :classic:

engines1.jpg_thumb.jpg

I did this just last week. I bought:

350 1x1 round plates in trans light blue (2p each, £7)

70 2x2 light bley plates (5p each, £3.50)

50 1x2 clear bricks (10p each, £5)

Total cost of £15.50 plus p&p.

I paid way too much for the clear bricks. I worked out later that any old yellowed, chewed bricks would do from a lighting point of view. It does have to be 1x2 bricks however, so that when you bend them, the engines take on a nice curve:

I have a lighting kit on it's way. It is coming from overseas, so I won't have it this week, but I will probably have it before the end of January. I'll post more pictures when it's all wired up. In the meantime, I used a phone camera to test the lighting effect:

All credit for this entire idea goes to Matt de Lanoy, who first used this idea in his awesome Falcon MOC (a ship which my shabby old bricklinked 10179 is not worthy to polish the hatch covers of).

Of course, all of this does mean that I have two original light bley boat riggings which I have no further use for...

Oh, you don't need those...You can just send them along to me!

This is so much better than the rigging. I have never understood why people are willing to pay a fortune for it when there are alternatives like this.

People pay for the set, not a MOC, there are plenty of better alternatives out there, with interiors and better cabins and better stands.

This set has a cult following that people feel it commands, and the rarity makes people want it more.

I understand that, but since people are now brickling it (most of the time not 100% correct parts), then it can't be considered an official set from a purist point of view.

In that case why not go and improve on some details. I certainly would

If rarity is what people value then modding it would make your version ever rarer. I think the main reason most people don't do it is that it takes more time and effort.

Resell value is also greatly diminished if you don't buy the rigging. I love ScottishDave's engine design, though. It solves the lighting problem and ultimately looks better than the official version. Might have to mod my falcon after seeing that one...

Exactly. The original's greebles look good, but they're not exactly accurate, esp. in the front and sides. I've seen plenty of modded Falcon's which look more accurate to the movie version and don't have some of the more expensive parts. I have yet to see a custom radar dish that looks good, though. I think I'll have to bite the bullet and get that one...

The site is about the MOCs and Lego products, not a sales space. Members with a history on EB are welcome in the buy/sell/trade area, but posts primarily about commerce outside that forum will have the links removed.

In this case, I also question 3D printing a copyrighted part. It is something I think should best be left off this site. Though policy on this point may be pending.

Thank you all for understanding.

@scottishdave I'm wondering if there is a list of parts that can be replaced without it showing, I mean non visible hard to find pars for other cheaper alteratives.

Do you know of such a list.

Totally understandable. Would it be okay if I were to post some pics here and then people can PM me for further details?
