Dan-147 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I, too, like liquor with my Lego. Some of my best inspiration has come while inebriated. I had to forgo the liquor to finance me LEGO habit... Dan-147 Quote

LegoSjaak Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 (edited) And a fresh video from all 9 modular buildings, taken this morning! Edited March 22, 2014 by LegoSjaak Quote
Klikstyle Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 These look awesome! It looks like IKEA Expedit shelves are pretty popular for this. I use them, too. Here are two photos of my separated town. Your display looks great! You might want to rotate the buildings out every so often, though. That much direct sunlight is going to wreak havoc on your bricks. Quote
gifinim Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Mine are on top of a row of small Ikea Billy bookcases. The only problem is they don't sit flush to the wall (massive skirting boards) so the kids can knock bits off and they fall down the back :-( After reading how many other people are using Ikea furniture to store and display their collections I think LEGO should work with Ikea to produce a range of storage solutions in classic LEGO colours - Expedit 5 x 4 shelves in classic red or blue anyone? The only problem is they don't sit flush to the wall (massive skirting boards) so the kids can knock bits off and they fall down the back :-( If you still have the cardboard boxes that the IKEA parts came in, you can simply cut a piece to cover the top of your shelf and bend up the back to form a 90 degrees short wall to keep parts from rolling into the back. After reading how many other people are using Ikea furniture to store and display their collections I think LEGO should work with Ikea to produce a range of storage solutions in classic LEGO colours - Expedit 5 x 4 shelves in classic red or blue anyone? Since many of the uses of IKEA furniture featured involves putting the buildings ON TOP instead of within, it seems to indicate that IKEA furniture may not be exactly ideal. I have a 5x5 expedit and the shelves are not tall enough to fit most of the modulars without ripping off some of the top bits. And modulars look best when connected to each other and the shelf dividers prevent that. I've modified my expedit by removing the dividers but I can't do anything about the height (I have a photo earlier in this thread). IKEA does have a nice (and cheap) vertical all-glass display case (detolf), but the shelves are not adjustable (I think each shelf offers about 16 inches and you need at least 30 inches for the Town Hall). If only this case was a little bigger and horizontal. (Someone moded two detolf cases together: http://www.tofunction.com/model/2011/02/detolf-dual-mod/) Quote
stevkir Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) You guys are all talk about IKEA and I just want to puke. A doctor my wife works for says it best, "gram cracker furniture". Edited April 1, 2014 by stevkir Quote
Super Goblin Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Well you and that doctor are crazy. IKEA is some of the best low cost furniture. Quote
TheBear Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Displaying Lego is a good use for cheap furniture even for doctors who can afford to be snobby about it. Quote

To be frank, I would not have considered collecting the Modular sets if I didn't already have a place in mind to store or display them. Quote
elleana Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 You guys are all talk about IKEA and I just want to puke. A doctor my wife works for says it best, "gram cracker furniture". Well its decently priced and value for money. Of course its not fancy hardwood and whatnot, but it works. Quote
jtr Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Half of my modular collection sits on top of out unused piano the other half in a cupboard. The only time the two halves meet is when the kids an I set up the Lego city in the kids toy/play area. I must say, I'm pretty jealous of some of your Lego rooms, I'm luck to have a Lego shelf . . . After reading how many other people are using Ikea furniture to store and display their collections I think LEGO should work with Ikea to produce a range of storage solutions in classic LEGO colours - Expedit 5 x 4 shelves in classic red or blue anyone? Expedit's replacement, Kallax, comes in a few different colors. One is high gloss red (although I thought Expedit came in red as well?). I've used IKEA Billy bookshelves for display in the past because the shelves are adjustable, but it's still not an ideal solution, as the shelves do not fit an even number of baseplate and there is wasted space. Wodanis Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Anyone have some more photos to look at? I find descriptions don't do this topic justice. Quote
Zed_43 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 For me, one of the most cusomisable way to display lego sets is that: (found on google). I use the same type of shelves in my room with 50cm wide boards (50cm allows to fit 2 rows of baseplates: one row of roads and one row of modular buildings). It's cheap, easy to place and to use, can be removed easily and shelves can be moved up/down really easilly and quickly! (But I don't have doors in front of it like on the photograph, I like to see my LEGO sets or MOCs) Quote
JayCal Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) Anyone have some more photos to look at? I find descriptions don't do this topic justice. All nine modulars (with the exception of the "market"part of market street) are present! Edited April 5, 2014 by JayCal Quote
Zed_43 Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Nice collection! I mean nice collection of modular buildings but... Nice collection of Gibson LesPauls!!!! Quote
stevkir Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) Purchased the PR and I have a bit of my GG built since the last picture of my modulars was posted. Edited April 5, 2014 by stevkir Quote
rollermonkey Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 What is on top of the other half of the Pet Store? ...and while our modular rows are very similar with the same buildings including the partially built GG, I got PC today instead of PR. Quote
stevkir Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 (edited) What is on top of the other half of the Pet Store? That is the Delorian from Back to the Future and if you look on top of the TH you can see Doc Brown by the clock. When I have space for a street and town square I plan on running a line from the clock tower to a light pole and placing the Delorian on the street. Freaking love Back to the Future and one of my all time favorite movies. ...and while our modular rows are very similar with the same buildings including the partially built GG, I got PC today instead of PR. I went with the PR because I find it much more architecturally appealing than the PC and the interior of the PR is hands down the best designed out of all of them. I put the first level of PR together last night and finished it this morning/afternoon and now feeling the blues. I have an itch to rip it apart and build it again as it seemed to quick of a build and I need more. Maybe I am just comparing it subconsciously to my GG build because I spent time ordering parts from BL, PAB and BnP and taking a few weeks to slowly have it built. I am sure I have the buy the parts and build it from scratch bug and buying a pre made set just doesn't do it for me anymore. I have about another half a modular space left on that shelf and when I get the CC or MS built I will either place half the MS on that shelf or remove a section of the pet store and place in another 32x32 modular and place the remaing 2.5 modulars on my wife's shelf. I really need to find a way to display them better out in the open instead of hiding away in my closet. I live in a 1,100 sf (102 square meters for those that are not from the States) apartment with 3 bedrooms 2 baths and displaying them will not be easy. Edited April 6, 2014 by stevkir Quote
zobbified Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 My modulars spend most of their time in the Ikea Detolf cabinet unless I take them out (see attached picture). FB, TH, & PR not built yet due to lack of space. Primary concern is with dust/dirt settling on the buildings, even with the Detolf cabinet dust/dirt builds up pretty fast. Have been using a can of compressed air and the vacuum cleaner (at the lowest setting) to clean them every month or so. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 ^ clean them every month? That is dedication. I never clean mine. Unless you have a glass enclosure they will just get dirty again. Quote

I hope you didn't feel some need to justify your purchase/build order to a guy who has built 3.5 modulars, bricklink'ed another and has 1.5 more in line to be built, in about a month, all while being an unemployed, full-time college student. :) Quote
