"Not personally, no...I might have heard the name once or twice. He was recruit, just before I left for R'klif. Constable Giselle's reaction seemed to be pretty standard though--I don't recall anything I heard being positive.

I chuckle.

"You may be right about that. Not, perhaps, the brightest of fellows. That's why he called on us heroes to help him out with the detective work there. His superiors clearly didn't seem to think too highly of him. I can't recall their names. They were lieutenants though...a man and a woman. The man's name was something along the lines of 'servant' or something. A few of the heroes seemed recognize him. The woman's name was something to do with 'light.' Not the friendliest bunch."

Patricia seems to do a better job of keeping out the lunatics than the Veterans do with us, but...well, who am I to complain?"

I laugh heartily.

"I know what you mean. The sort that walk the halls these days...they're a disgrace to the name 'hero.' It seems anyone who wants can just walk in and 'be a hero' at any time they choose when it is convenient for them. Heck, half of the so called 'heroes' seem to be using Heroica more as a way of 'legalizing' their robbing. The hall is riddled with cutthroats. I'm just glad the majority seem to do their shady business outside. Although, I can't be too sure about the Town Watch being any better. One of the fellow inspectors in our quest was this shriveled decrepit being who looked nothing like anything I've seen before. Don't even know what he was, but he ended up being the cause of the whole problem and we arrested him at the end of the day. I tell you, once serious crackpots start becoming a part of an organization, it can destroy the organization from the very roots, weaken the foundation, that sort of thing. It's sad when good places are corrupt by being too accepting of things and people who just plain wrong."

"What about you? What was that about a mystery in the Marketplace? And you mentioned you'd been to Dastan as well--did you make that trip with a Sorcerer named De'kra, by any chance?"

"The marketplace ended up being no big deal really. Went there, breezed through the place, and left in just a few short hours. As it turns out Private Watsup was trying to frame Detective Hoples by stealing goods from the various merchants and planting evidence incriminating Hoples. We got that sorted out right quick, though. Ended up meeting the Dragon Lord who was out for a chat with the Copper Fox and some Feathered Orc. The Dastan trip was a fine one. Met with the Rito and we helped them to cure the great dragon, Retraga. Heh, we even encounter Mademoiselle Shadeaux while there. Out party was led by Maurice the Paladin, not sure if you know him. Good, upright man. There was also Harkenshire and Mizuki. 'De'kra?' Can't say I recall. However there was a Sorcerer on the team, a little demon. Heh! Odd little thing. He was one confused being. At the end he knew so little about God that I was almost convinced that he wasn't a demon. Even the demons are forced to acknowledge their counterparts. He was one confused being. Spoke in nonsensical language and couldn't understand the voice of reason. Haven't seen him around the hall much since then. Where have your journeys taken you thus far Arthur, and you Tarn? I have seen you around the hall a fair bit since my return to Heroica."

"Oh my! You heroes must be on the move a lot to not even notice a wall in your own city you must be on the move a lot. This is my first time out of Dastan and I can tell you that the fast pace of Eubric does not agree with me at all. And the Hovels... I hope that they do move the Oracle's Shrine out of the Hovels because from what I've seen so far the Hovels are a very dangerous place." U'Voros grips his spear tightly as the heroes round a corner and see exactly the sort of thing he's talking about.

Swords ring out as a man at a center of thugs fights for his life. One of the thugs, standing back, turns and faces the heroes, smiling confidently.

"Well hey there, how's it going?" he asks casually. "Sorry to disturb y'all on this lovely morning. Just doing some work for the good ol' wolfgang- you know, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. I'm Sonny Six-Toes, no, that's not it... Donald something... Fonny Five-Fingers." He nods to himself, sure he's gotten the name correct. "Just giving this Hinckwell thug a little talking to. You don't mind that, do you?"

"Those are heroes of Heroica, Wolfgang fool," Grady says, and then spits at the mention of the Hall's name. "They don't care what happens to anyone else. Damn traitors, that's what they are." Grady deflects a blow from the goofy looking Orc. "That being said, heroes, if you wouldn't mind helping an old enemy out - I'm sure I can take them, but I've got some errands to run and this is setting me behind a little, heh." Grady laughs confidently, but his brow is covered in sweat.

"Don't you know, Hinckwell! The heroes of Heroica and Fonny are ol' pals! They'd never hurt the Wolfgang, ain't that right buddies?"

"I think we should help the poor man needs help," hisses U'Voros with a thin cracked voice to the others. What will the heroes do?

"Great...just what I needed. Representatives of two of my sworn enemies, in a fight with each other. Part of me wants to finish 'em both off." He pauses, considering how best to handle the situation. "Leave this to me, I think I can bluff them out of it," he whispers to the party.

Arthur steps forward and speaks diplomatically. "You know, Five-Fingers, Donny and Violetta told me personally that Ulric was past the need for violence...on the night they died. But you know, things have changed since then--my opinion of the woman who killed them has changed, and who's to say mine of yours can't either? Go on. Prove you're better than this money-grubbing Hinckwell swine, and let him go. Otherwise, I fail to see the difference between you." Arthur sneers at the Hinckwell mercenary to emphasize his point.

"Donny, that was it. I'm Donny. And Ulric may think that he don't need to steal anymore, but we've gotta eat, so..." he shrugs. "Like I said, no problem with you folks if you don't have a problem with us, but the Hinckwell is going down!"

I speak diplomatically to "Donny" so that Grady can't hear. "If I were you I wouldn't take on someone who seemed so capable of defending himself. Listen, Donny, or whatever you want to call yourself, if you keep up this nonsense against the wishes and orders of Ulric himself. I may regret to inform you that he will hear about it and have you punished accordingly. Don't think you can hide from the Wolfgang. Just as you said, we don't have any problem with you so long as you are not disobeying the orders of your superiors and casting off a poor representation of the Wolfgang to the people around. The Wolfgang is not a criminal organization and those who try to hide their criminal activities behind the mask of the Wolfgang had better beware for Ulric will not stand for them for more than a moment. He has been known to purge his ranks of scum. Now, will you prove to us your affiliation to the true Wolfgang by stepping down your act of violence, or will you stubbornly hold to your act and risk being tracked down and slain by the Wolfgang themselves?"

"I don't think ya'll understand the Wolfgang too well," says Donny Five-Finger. "Sure, Ulric wants some things, but how do you think we Generals feed the people who follow us? It's all about destroy the houses or something I think." Donny shrugs. "Sides, we already attacked him. Too late now. Maybe next time we'll be more pacifist and ask for the Houses' gold more kindly, if you want us to."

Before the Donny Incident occurred, Tarn had managed to say to Pretzel: "Most of my Quests have taken me out of Eubric. I have been to Dastan and seen much of its beauty, and to the wondrous realm of Xu on an airship. Twice. An airship! I have not seen its like since."

Seeing that Arthur and Pretzel had taken the initiative, Tarn waited for now. He had no previous dealings with the Wolfgang, but his first Quest had involved a Hinckwell, so he was more likely to side with Grady, but was happy to see how it all played out.

"Listen," I hiss as diplomatically as I can manage, "you are doing yourself no favours. You are the one who doesn't seem to understand what the Wolfgang are up to. Of course it's all about destroying the houses, but the idea is that it gives the impression to the masses that the houses are destroying themselves and the Wolfgang are stepping in to save the remains of the city. Your attacking a Hinckwell in the middle of a busy street where people can see makes the Wolfgang look like some criminal organization, which it is not, to the people. Ulric is powerful enough to not be worry about letting an enemy escape here or there but, trust me, he won't take kindly to seeing his reputation amongst the townsfolk falling any. The Wolfgang is powerful because the hovels support them. If that support is withdrawn he will not be at all pleased."

"What do you want from the Hinckwell, anyway? If you're after cash to feed the poor, there's easier ways to go about it; why bear the risks of a mugging?"

"Yeah, I'm looking for gold to feed the poor. Me and my pals, we're poor. And maybe afterwards the poor will get to go to a tavern and drink a few meads and meet some pretty ladies."

Donny turns back to the fight, clearly done with the heroes. What would they like to do?

Posted

"I'm starting to think these clowns aren't even Wolfgang. Far be it from me to help a Hinckwell, but..." Turning slightly away from the bandits so they couldn't see his left side, Arthur quietly pulls his sword a couple inches from its sheath, and looks questioningly towards Tarn and Pretzel.

I nod, and then look to Tarn, gripping my Flying Cross.

"Don't know what this Hinckwell has done to you, but we can't very well let these ridiculous thugs have their way with him. I, personally, have nothing against the Hinckwells. Can't recall encountering any of them before now though."

"I...have. I don't like the way they run this city, I'd rather back the Shadeaux. That said, I'm not about to let a man die to these thugs. Hmm...don't use my name while we're here--call me Em. Hopefully if he decides to bestow his silly reputation on us, he'll give it to another Hero who could use it instead of me."

I shrug.

"Can't say I know much about either house. They were linked to a murder of a certain merchant a while back, but as it turns out their links were probably based on false information, so nothing to go on I guess. Mademoiselle Shadeaux seemed like a pleasant enough girl."

"Good job attempting to talk this Wolfgang member out of it, both of you, but he's clearly not listening to reason. I am always for a diplomatic solution, but sometimes sense has to come from another source." With this, Tarn grips his Great Sword and tries to knock 'Donny' out with the pommel whilst his back is turned and his attention is on the Hinckwell and not the party.

Will she ever learn.

I hope the others don't notice.

"Enough crime!" he cries. "It's time to clean the Hovels up, or the rest of the city will never take us seriously." He joins the fray!

"Oh...er...great!"

He probably is just here because of the angel. I wish she wouldn't attract such a crowd.

My angel turns and looks me in the eyes.

*oh2*:innocent:

I repeat.
