There is no need for anyone to fear about a lack of jobs to do. We have no intention of replacing the Town Watch. You are doing a remarkable job with what you have." I turn to U'Voros. "Well, I'm not expecting any further trouble, but you may as well take this Fashionable Shield. Hold it with respect. It served me well for many a quest." I grimace. I don't think you added the Military-Grade Fire Bomb to my stats. Of course, there are good chances that it's there and I'm just not seeing it. It seems to be a common issue. Em, you take the Mead and the Nostrum, and I do not take your offer of a grand potion as I am fully healed. Pretzel, again, I do not need healing, though I am grateful for the offer. That ruffian sailor - he wouldn't have fought on his own, but now you've shown him that anyone can fight. Suppose he gets poor, loses his job, drinks too much, goes out and loots. Or maybe he tries to stop a looting on his own and gets himself killed. This city is in chaos, and it needs order, and like it or not sell swords fighting in the streets is not any semblance of order." "Thank you for the shield, Monk! I am very grateful for the shield, I've never gotten a shield before! I have been trained with a shield, so I should be able to use it well enough." U'Voros stares into the shield for a few seconds before turning to Arthur. "We're heading to the Oracle's shrine is where we're headed. Just a short walk from here. We can be off to the shrine right away." "I'll see you around, I guess," leers Grady as he stalks down the streets. Andrew grunts at the heroes dismissively as they get on their way. "There seems to be much anger in your city, both in the army men and in the citizens there seems to be much anger. Why does the Emperor of the city not appease them both? Isn't that the Emperor's job?" Edited January 16, 2014 by Zepher Quote

Palathadric Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I suppose the gold "Donny" stole was not supposed to wind up in his drops? "Why, thank you, lad!" If nothing else the party leader seemed generous in his loot distribution. "Thank you for the shield, Monk! I am very grateful for the shield, I've never gotten a shield before! I have been trained with a shield, so I should be able to use it well enough." "Well, I had an extra...two actually, so you may as well use it for now. I believe there are other heroes who will need it, but for now it's on my person so mine to loan. I'm sure they must make quite good shields in Dastan. Their knights are rather famed." Quote
Zepher Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 "No one here is a subject, they are free to do whatever they wish." "You have been to Dastan, Master Tarn you have been to Dastan! You know we are free there too. But who makes sure that the citizens are safe if there is no Emperor? Who trades with Dastan, or fends off invaders if there is no Emperor who fends off invaders?" "And our Knights are rather famed, Monk. The Dragon Knights, but they are few in numbers in high in prestige are Dragon Knights, and I am not a Dragon Knight, just a regular man at arms." The heroes arrive outside the shrine. "Are you ready to see the Lady Ella Septrine?" asks U'Voros of all the heroes, but his eyes wander to Tarn in particular. Quote
Flipz Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 OOC: I drank a Grand Tonic, so I should be down one of those and up 15 Ether. "There seems to be much anger in your city, both in the army men and in the citizens there seems to be much anger. Why does the Emperor of the city not appease them both? Isn't that the Emperor's job?" "Eubric does not have an Emperor, U'Voros. It is a Free Port, with no ruler. No one here is a subject, they are free to do whatever they wish." "Exactly. Though the Wolfgang we spoke of earlier...their leader, Ulric, wants to become Eubric's Emperor. So does the man that Black Knight with the blue shield works for, though neither he nor his employer would admit it--he doesn't want the title, he just wants the power. All six Houses want power over this city in their own way, which is why there's so much anger in this place. Personally, I'm partial to the Shadeaux--the rivals of the Hinckwells, like the man with the blue shield. The Shadeaux's current leader isn't much better than that of the Hinckwells, but I have more faith in Noctus Shadeaux's children than I do in those of the Hinckwells." "As for the Town Watch--what you see as the 'army'--well, having once been a member of them I can tell you they're a diverse lot. They're funded pretty evenly by the Houses, so they're not particularly partial to any of them, but not a lot of that cash trickles down to the front-liners who deserve it. There's a lot of bribery, and a fair number of folks are rather sympathetic to the Wolfgang, despite standing orders to arrest or kill the Wolfgang leaders on sight. While we're on the subject...I appreciate their stated goal, but I just don't trust them to actually do it. A lot of their people are robbers and thugs--not uncommon in the Hovels--and their leader, Ulric, is a heartless chessmaster who has allied himself with a monstrous child-snatching sorceress who, if the stories are true, was involved in provoking the great battle that led to the sinking of the continent of Mercution beneath the sea. I don't use the term 'evil' a lot, but if it applies to anyone it's her." Quote

They don't seem to instill the right virtues in their men though. Or maybe they just don't select their men well...it seems they're always stuck with the incompetent folk. So the Wolfgang are linked with witches now? Good God, I knew we should have destroyed those members when we had the chance. I suppose right now the closest house you could consider as being "emperors" in the right of protecting the people would probably be the Bonapartes. They more or less single-handedly keep these isles safe from and outside invasions. It's just unfortunate that they don't have much power to stop all the internal strive and disputes. I can't say I've met any of the Bonapartes before, true ones that is. We had this lousy group of Bonaparte pretenders attack us in one of my last quests as we were aboard this ship...what was it called again? The "Mayflower" or something...ah, "Magpie" that was it. Anyway, we disposed of those no good pretenders. Actually that's where I got this." I tap my Shako. Quote

That's where Heroica comes in, we work with all the Houses and the Town Watch if there are any disagreements." Quote

"I can't say that I fully understand the politics of Eubric, but then again I can't say that I fully understand the politics of Dastan or Eubric. We do not know of the Wolfgang, other than that meeting... though I think that Lady Ella did hear of a rally or two of the Wolfgang even though I have not really heard of the Wolfgang. Lady Ella leaves these walls when the Oracle and I are not looking, I am almost sure of it. Lady Ella is allowed out, of course, but I'd be happier if Lady Ella told me when she was going out which she is allowed to do of course. These streets are so dangerous." U'Voros shakes his head. "I don't know any of those names - Hinckwells or Bonapartes or Shadows or Hinckwells. Too many Hinckwells and Shadows and Bonapartes to keep track of. I think the ship that Lady Ella and I arrived on may have met some Bonapartes, but we arrived at a northern port... Loush is the port we arrived at I think." "But enough of that. We are to see Lady Ella." The U'Kin brings the heroes forward into the shrine... and stands at attention next to his beaming Princess. "Well hello there, heroes," she smiles. "It seems fate has once more brought us together for some grand adventure... though this time I may have forced her hand a little." She giggles. "I had already seen Master Thothwick, dear Nyx, and of course the roguishly handsome or handsomely roguish Atramor, I figured I may as well say hello to one or two more old faces." She glances over Arthur, but her eyes land on Tarn and her smile widens. "So, has U'Voros bored you with the details yet? Or do I get to tell you a little bit about my dreams? A little merrier than the ones the Oracle herself is having, thankfully." Quote
Flipz Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Arthur's eyes light up with delight and surprise as Pretzel mentions the Magpie, but before he can launch into a tirade on the Bonaparte's sins, they arrive at the Shrine. He returns Ella's glance with a smile, but his eyes go cold at the mention of Atramor. He stiffens involuntarily. "Yes...of course." He clears his throat. "Master Kn--erm, Master U'Voros mentioned you were having dreams about the lost book of the Princess and the Warrior. He was a bit light on the details, though. I'm glad to hear they're pleasant visions, though--it would be a nice change of pace, for me at least." He grins widely, and adds, "Unless you'd like to discuss it privately with Master Tarn and fill the rest of us in later." He quickly turns away to stifle a snicker. Arthur considers mentioning the letter he'd sent at Grogmas, but thinks better of it. It would be like Valentine to mess that up for me, too. And if the princess simply forgot, well...no sense in embarrassing her, especially in front of Tarn. Quote
Rumble Strike Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) Tarn's heart raced as he gazed upon Ella. She was more beautiful than he remembered. Older, and yet younger, somehow both at once. The perils of communing with the spirit pools has to leave some trace, he thought. It cannot be an easy thing, to be a vessel for uncontrollable visions. He blushed furiously as he responded to Ella, knowing he was Party Leader and that he was representing Heroica rather than any personal interests. "Ella, it gladdens my heart to see you once again. U'Voros has spoken of the fairytales, but they are not ones that have been told in this part of Olegaia and we are all unfamiliar with them. It is most interesting that they are manifesting in your dreams, please, tell us of them." Edited January 17, 2014 by Rumble Strike Quote
Palathadric Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I raise my eyebrows at the interaction between Tarn and Ella. Somehow this can't be good. I nod simply, but respectfully enough, in the direction of the princess. Quote
Zepher Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 "Oh, how delightful. I get to tell you a fairy tale. Shall we all sit down? Would you like some warm milk?" Ella smiles and giggles. "My father used to tell me these tales. Strange, to have an Emperor of a people whisper ghost stories in your ear as you go to bed." "I'm sure U'Voros told you of the adventures that the Prophetess and the Warrior went on, and I'm sure he told you that they kept a book of those adventures. The final adventure, in their stories, takes place in old Kingdom that lies below Eubric, and they then set out to Dastan, but never arrived. The story goes that the ship they were on must have sank, and I do not doubt it. It is a shame, of course, that their book went down with them." "Their fabled book," intercuts U'Voros. "Their fabled book sank with them in a fabled crash that they lost their fabled book in." "I've been getting visions of a chest, underwater, sealed by magic. Inside is a book. Now, it is impossible for prophets to look into the past with that much clarity, but in my dreams I also hear a voice, whispering to me, summoning me. My guess is this - suppose that I am not seeing the past, but that the Prophetess in the fable saw the future? Knew she would crash and drown, but wanted her book to be revealed to Olegia. She sees me, now, and asks me to retrieve it for her." Ella blushes. "It is guess work, and it is a fable, but I feel I must give it a chance. That book will have history that we can only dream of. Knowledge long lost to us. And it belonged to another prophet." Ella glances shyly at the heroes. "So what do you think? Worth the adventure?" Quote
Flipz Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 "I'm in. My only question is, how're we supposed to breathe down there? I mean, if I had a Sapphire or an Aquamarine or something, we'd be set, but I don't want to see our Prophetess and Warrior share the previous ones' fate." Quote

Ella glances shyly at the heroes. "So what do you think? Worth the adventure?" I look at the princess questioningly, trying to take all that she was saying in. "I appreciate the story and an adventure and all sounds wonderful, but I'm not sure I understand what exactly you want us to do. From what I seem to understand the book is under the sea, already rendering it impossible to reach. Furthermore, it could be anywhere between here and Dastan." Quote
