Vee Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 So I have this set, Jabba's Palace, that I bought as a mistake (don't ask me why, it is difficult to explain... but s% happens) some time ago and never opened. This is the only set I have that is not open because I don't buy Lego sets to make money, I buy for us, for the family. Then, I thought: I will not open this thing, I will wait until it is retired and then, after some time, maybe I can recover the retail price I paid selling it in ebay. So recently I got happy because the set was SOLD OUT at S@H, FINALLY! I thought: "good, now I just have to wait a few years... ". Guess what? The sold out Jabba's Palace is back at S@H, for sale! I am new to following Lego as a fan so I don't have all the info from the past necessary to understand Lego's decisions, to know if this is usual or not, but I have seen during this past two months lots of nice sets becoming SOLD OUT and never coming back, not even one, and now the one that comes back is exactly the one that I was rooting for that it would never make a come back!!! Lego is a very very very very very non-transparent company! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!    Quote
Rick Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 If it makes you happy, I'm sure it'll get sold out at some point. I've changed the title of the thread in attempt to turn a rant into a discussion topic. Quote
Vee Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 ... at some point. . Yes, At some point I will also be dead... I don't want to open a new thread but I have a question. I was "testing" S@H and I saw that I can choose any country I like and it seems I can buy from any country from those in the list of countries with the exception of Korea. I don't know what would happen if I really tried to go ahead with a purchase at S@H having chosen a different country than the USA, I don't know if it would really go through, but my question is why Korea is the only country that requires an exclusive Lego ID while all other don't? One more of Lego's impossible-to-understand policies/decisions/weirdnesses? My explanation is that it is the only website that does not use the Latin alphabet...  Quote
Robianco Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 The item is on sale at my local Lego store but I think it will be retired pretty soon. Once that happens I think you'll get the profit you're expecting. Quote
Off the wall Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I bought this set because of the political/religious controversy surrounding it. I wanted to see it up close and see what the controversy was all about. I built it and then took it apart. I read somewhere that it was supposed to be retired at the end of 2013. There was some debate as to whether it was being retired early due to the controversy. I won't go into details, but if you google it, you can get details of the problem/concerns. Can't wait for TLG to retire it so that I can become a reseller. :-) Quote

As soon as I think I can recover most of what I paid, I will get rid of it. Quote
jimmynick Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Are there any sets that sell routinely for less than retail on the aftermarket, especially MISB? I haven't looked, but I doubt it. Quote
Faefrost Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 That is a popular set that TLG has promised not to remake once it retires. And it should be retiring by the summer wave release at the latest. So you will probably get more than your money back if you are patient. Quote
Vee Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Are there any sets that sell routinely for less than retail on the aftermarket, especially MISB? I haven't looked, but I doubt it. No, there are not but Jabba's Palace is one of them, unfortunately. I guess people bought it / buy it with a huge discount and then they can try to sell at retail for a profit. Some time after I bought mine at retail from amazon, same amazon had a huge promotion on it that made me fume! That is a popular set that TLG has promised not to remake once it retires. And it should be retiring by the summer wave release at the latest. So you will probably get more than your money back if you are patient. I will need a lot of patience... I think that because this set has been under some great promotions, it will take time for it to reach retail price, even after retired. I will wait... I guess... lol Quote
Legopast Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 It consistently sells on eBay for around £82, Which is also the price Lego shop @ Home currently sells it for. If however you are looking to make the £119 back that it originally was ~ As others have said you will have to be patient, Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Are there any sets that sell routinely for less than retail on the aftermarket, especially MISB? I haven't looked, but I doubt it. T-6 Jedi Shuttle from 2011 usually sells online for about 30 (euros or dollars) when it's retail was around double that price. I look forward to buying that set, since I recently found a Barnes and Noble that miraculously still carried it's counterpart, the Bounty Hunter Assault Gunship. That is a popular set that TLG has promised not to remake once it retires. And it should be retiring by the summer wave release at the latest. So you will probably get more than your money back if you are patient. They're never going to remake it? That's sure going to make a lot of original trilogy fans that get into Lego this year or the next, very mad. Glad I got it at the last minute as a Christmas gift, I don't know how I would have handled without Oola in my collection. Quote

If however you are looking to make the £119 back that it originally was ~ As others have said you will have to be patient, Sorry for the misunderstanding, I live in the US, I was talking about US$. Yes, I paid 120, but 120 US dollars, this is the retail price here. You can find it NIB in much better prices though, just like in UK. Quote

Glad I got it at the last minute as a Christmas gift, I don't know how I would have handled without Oola in my collection. Yep. Some crazed Turkish Islamic group in Austria declared that it was insulting and racist (I wish I was making this up.) because it almost sorta kinda possibly resembled the Haggia Sophia mosque, provided you are heavily nearsighted, squint really hard, and are on a 3 day NyQuil high. Common logical arguments, such as "it was based on a building from a 30 year old movie", "the movie based the design on local Tunisia architectural style", "the Haggia Sophia was originally built as a Christain Church, is no longer a Mosque, and currently is a museum complete with tacky gift shop" somehow failed to make this extremely loud "group" go away (astonishingly no more than one person was ever found to be a member of this group.) However due to the "topical" nature of the outrage it got a lot of worldwide press. Lego got sick of being called racist in the press and just announced that the set would be retired permanently at the end of its life cycle. It's a safe bet they will not be remaking it as it is now viewed as "crazy bait". Quote
LEGO Historian Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Faefrost... very true about the Hagia Sophia... except once the Turks conqueored the Byzantine capital in 1453... they were so impressed with the Hagia Sophia... that they built copies of it all over their empire... such as the Blue Mosque... https://www.google.com/search?q=Blue+mosque+istanbul&espv=210&es_sm=122&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=R8DJUsS7B4TJygHWpoDICw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1024&bih=678 So that's why it offended a few people... Rick Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Let's not repeat that discussion again and stick to the topic. Thanks. Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 (edited) FaeFrost: I'm sure I heard about that little incident, though never put much attention into it. Jabba's palace retailed at about $120, and was arguably the flagship set of summer 2012 (though Palpatine's arrest also falls under this category) and sets of that esteem usually get a 3-4 year lifespan, as opposed to the regular 2. So I'm sure that if that "group" didn't speak out, we'd see some more of that set, even in 2015! How crazy is that? Faefrost... very true about the Hagia Sophia... except once the Turks conqueored the Byzantine capital in 1453... they were so impressed with the Hagia Sophia... that they built copies of it all over their empire... such as the Blue Mosque... https://www.google.c...iw=1024&bih=678 So that's why it offended a few people... Then blame Lucasfilm, not Lego. Either way, none were trying to offend anybody. Oops, just saw Rick's comment, nevermind what I said Edited January 5, 2014 by Freddy Bricker Quote

Sorry Rick...I must have missed that discussion the first time around... I guess we can write off the original building in Turkey as ever being a LEGO Architectural model... Quote

LEGO Guy Bri Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) I've seen numerous sets go on the "sold out" status only to come back a day or few days later. Bizarrely enough, the 41999 4x4 Crawler Exclusive Edition did, for a couple days. Even though there weren't anymore, it was listed as back in stock Edited January 8, 2014 by LEGO Guy Bri Quote
Vee Posted January 8, 2014 Author Posted January 8, 2014 Ban who? There was a spam message above mine but fortunately the admins were quick to remove it. Quote
naf Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I've seen this happen before. It could happen for a number of reasons. TLC decided to make more to meet some perceived demand. They could be restocks from returned Christmas gifts. If you follow the Lord of the Rings line, the Orc Forge set was sold out for a while, then magically came back only to be sold out again a few days later. Then, a few days later still, back in stock.
