Mikuri Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Hello, sorry if this would better fit in a general thread, but here I go. Together with my lover we both have a 9398 to play around with. I've upgraded mine with 2XL motors instead of the usual L ones. It works really well even without any differentials. But now we want to upgrade the other one to 4XL motors. Now we ain't too sure about how to do it without destroying how the truck looks like. Switching the motors wasn't much of a change, but now with 4 XL, 2 B.Packs and 2 IR it might gets a little cramped. So does anyone have done something similar? Even a 4XL crawler base would be nice to look at, didn't found any :/ And if someone has some kind of build for a motorised Unimog that would be nice to see too. Like details and such. Well.... I'll keep this thread updated as we progress... :P Quote
Technyk32231 Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 It's not quite 9398, but it does have 4 XL motors. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=522869 Quote
Zerobricks Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 I think you will have to totally redesign the chassis to fit 2 XL's per axle. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 What about four L motors? They would be easier than trying to fit two XL motors per a axle. Quote
Johnny P Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 4l-motors is less power than 4 xl-motors. I think he wants real power. Sorry for the double post but edit button doesn't work on my phone. SHE wants real power. Quote
JM1971 Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Need two battery boxes to power 4 XL motors and servo? Quote
Johnny P Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Yes 2 xl's is maximum for batt box. Or you have to bridge the thermal fuse. Quote
Foggy Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 So you have to add extra weight of at least 2 batt box or 2 8878.. and this weight should be placed as low as possible to keep a low centre of gravity.... Quote
JM1971 Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 The newish AAA battery boxes and 12 AAA eneloop batteries (6 for each box) is a lot cheaper than the 8878 but will be awkward to charge and wont last a long time with 4 xl motors, also I think the 8878 has a bit more power. Quote
Junpei Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 8878 outputs 7.2 volts, while the AAA batteryboxes output 9 volts. So if anything the XL's would be underpowered. Quote
Mikuri Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 Strange enough, 2XL + 1 Servo stands on 1 single B.pack. Maybe because of the V2 receiver. That or it is underpowered. But yeah, goal is to have max power with 4XL and no L-motors. Would give us a bit more speed without losing too much torque. I began some test builds... Nothing's cute as of now :P Quote
KAKTyC Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 So you have to add extra weight of at least 2 batt box or 2 8878.. and this weight should be placed as low as possible to keep a low centre of gravity.... what about putting Battery Boxes like this: and we can think about putting XLs on the axles like Efferman put Ls in his Mercedes G (I can't find it ) Quote
Junpei Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 That's exactly what I was thinking for the orientation of the BB's- mounted like on zblj's Monster. It would lower the centre of gravity, and the XL's would really make it a BOSS crawler... TLH Quote
Mikuri Posted January 12, 2014 Author Posted January 12, 2014 Yeah, a bit like the Unimog but on both sides. That's what I planned to do. But I find it weird that my lover 9398 runs 2 XL + servo on a single B.B. without any problem. Tested at least 5 minutes. Anyway, not like 3 would be a problem either but I think that a pair of XL's would be underpowered. That is, we were busy a lot and we have little to none progress on this project... Hopefully soon! Mikuri Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 About time I finish my model! A bit similar to the Titan for the quadro XL, I recycled the Servo chassis from the 9398 and after a few mods here and there, I've managed to finish my version! Side by side our 2XL version and ou new 4XL version :)! The 4XL version is the smaller one, but it is a bit larger and longer. Only the height is greatly reduced. More pics and maybe a video soon, gotta go sleep, sooooo tired. Quote
