Just wondering what the exact criteria for the death star 2 tag is? default_classic.gif

There are no exact criteria beyond "consistent positive contributions". After all, it's not exactly possible to precisely measure a subjective quality.

Update: ...and done! The new index is sorted according to both MOC type and appearance of the model within the saga, with a table of contents in the first post linking to the various categories throughout the index, so, hopefully, it'll be even easier to find MOCs in this forum. :classic:

Very nice work Doc!

The updated index will make it easier for everyone to find their favorite MOC now. :classic:

To be honest, I'm not certain, but I'm 99% sure that they're for staff who want a shiny lightsaber for a tag.

A while back I saw an old Yoda lightsaber tag in the Tag Archives and I thought it would be cool to update it into LEGO-fied versions so I made these. But it was actually a secret plan to know who among the staff are (closet?) SW fans. (Just kidding!)

And Doc, once again great job on the vastly improved MOC Index! Very impressive organization!

Erhm... since I'm not really active anymore I do take pleasure in viewing the blog daily.

But it seems you've stopped blogging :cry_sad:

Aww you made Kim T cry .

(I did notice less blog activity myself but couldn't find the blog thread ).

I think I'll start a petition on this...

Oky's on vacation, and he writes about 110% of the blog posts.

I'll see what I can do.

I second your opinion!

And may I add that the LSW forums is lagging behind the other themes on the FP too!

The frontpage is primarily for EB announcements and for highlighting news and reviews of new products and MOCs are frontpaged if there's nothing else recent to have up there. The staff does try to give each frontpage post a good amount of time at the top of the frontpage, so they have to prioritize what really needs to be on the frontpage. Star Wars just hasn't had a lot of that kind of stuff lately.

I have to disagree on that aspect as every MOCer tries to achieve a certain level of status with their works. Being blogged is one and on the FP is another. EB has a lot of MOCers in their specialized themes that other members may not realize they exist since like me, I spend 90% in LSW and the rest on the others. But when I see a pirate MOC featured on the FP, I'll likely spend a lot of time that day on the Pirate forums.

You're telling me that on slow days any MOC can wind up in the FP? That's not really fair, just my 2 cents. There has to be a consistent rule to only feature MOCs that are truly worth mentioning on FP, be it a slow day or not.

I actually think that front-paging MOCs is indeed important. However, breaking set news, or other TLG related things will always come first as we have a duty to report them. Therefore, sometimes the timing doesn't work out if there is a great MOC at the same time as an important news item. I agree that it is best to only feature fantastic MOCs on the frontpage; as far as I am aware, this is what we usually do. Of course, we do not frontpage contest entries as that would create an unfair advantage.

As Brickdoctor said, there isn't always a surplus of great things to frontpage, and sometimes we simply overlook something. We're all human (at least as far as I know. :look: ). We will try our best though, and now that you have raised this concern I will try to be even more aware of the situation.

Kim, there have been a few new blog posts since you posted. :classic:

I'm just curious, what is considered a "good amount of time"? The past few days there seems to be quite a bit of activity, but i remember times where the front page didn't change for days on end. Personally i find it nice to see something new on the front page every day.

I was thinking, isn't it possible to divide the front page into two seperate columns? Then you can have one column that always features the latest announcements, news and reviews, and one column to feature a "MOC of the day". It's just an idea ofcourse, but if possible it would allow you to feature MOCs on the front page more often without it interfering with news and announcements.

Usually around a day or two for important news.

I'm not sure if the board software would allow for something like that; you'd have to ask an admin who should know about these things better than I do. :classic:

Not any MOC. Forum moderators usually have a pretty good idea of the better MOCs that are actively being discussed, so if the frontpage is stale we can promote one of the discussions. We try to keep an active consistency of frontpage MOC posts interspersed with the news, but during times of heavy news features, there may be no frontpage mention of MOCs at all. That's as consistent as we can get with 20-odd people volunteering their time to run the site. If we wanted to be 100% "fair" we wouldn't frontpage any MOCs at all. To be blunt, there doesn't have to be any rule. We can run the site the way we see fit. We're not governed by any set rule of "fairness". That being said, we run the site as fairly and consistently as possible and try to take all people's concerns into consideration. I certainly appreciate the input, but the reality is, yes, sometimes we frontpage good MOCs to keep the momentum going on the front page and some very good MOCs get passed over for news or exclusive set reviews.

Another point to be aware of is that our theme moderators actively try to get their forum's MOC content to the frontpage. Even during heavy news times recently, our moderators try to squeeze in a "This is what's happening in the Star Wars forum!" post and feature many quality MOCs to go discuss and enjoy. This is becoming more of a goal of our theme moderators to make sure our talented builders are promoted and encouraged and others are encouraged to critique and learn from them.

I'm sure it's something we can discuss, however we have already hacked this software quite a bit. I think the frontpage posts run very smoothly right now. If there were a "featured MOC of the day" we'd have the same concerns. Why can't we do more than one a day? Why do I never get picked? Why did you split the frontpage into two columns? I can't read it now. And on and on. To be honest, I don't see the concern with it at present. (I'm bumping this after two weeks because someone asked me to chime in on it. I was on vacation at the time) I think the flow of posts between news, reviews and MOCs is fair and somewhat consistent but am happy to further discuss any concerns with you guys.

Hello Hinckley, welcome to the Star Wars forum (i do believe the historic forum is your usual place to hang out) and thank you for such an elaborate reply to the discussion above.

I had hoped that the suggestion that i made earlier would eliminate the need to prioritize between news and MOCs on the front page. But you made some valid counter arguments that make this solution sound a lot less ideal. Besides, like you pointed out, the front page seems to have an active and balanced flow of news and MOCs at the moment, so there seems to be no need to make any changes at this point.

Your reply gives us a nice insight on the decision making process of what gets featured on the front page, and indirectly also how the forums are run by the admins and moderators. I can only imagine how much time and effort is involved in keeping this site up and running and managing its contents. Considering that all the admins and moderators are volunteers, it just needs to be said what a huge amount of appreciation i have for all your efforts!

I'm quite happy with the way the front page is at the moment. Even if there is suddenly a big splurge of new FP stuff with a quick turnaround. It sometimes draws me to themes I wouldn't necessarily usually look at, or news that I would never otherwise have known about. If I feel I missed a previous FP... well... That is what my mouses scroll wheel is for, and works perfectly to keep up with previous FP's too :sweet:

The new Main Index is up! We've got a new graphic, a new, Death Star-themed name, pictorial links to all our pages on other sites, (flickr, blog, YouTube etc.) and a list of Star Wars tags, among other things.

Fantastic job . I love the logo.

I'm not sure where to put this now the thread is locked, but in the Review index 30058 STAP should be with the polybags, not the mini sets.
