ZCerberus Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I think this is a solid representation of what a set could look like. Good work. Quote
Infernum Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 @ Haltiamieli: Nice! I love the details in your version! Looks just like the gate to me! @ Deathleech: I don't like the square version as much, but the rounded one is great! Quote
Deathleech Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 @ Deathleech: I don't like the square version as much, but the rounded one is great! Ya, I didn't either so I re-did it all with the hinged walls. I also added a gate of my own. Here is my Minas Tirith version 2.0 Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I'd buy the Gondorian soldiers at once! I haven't quite understood, however, how you intend to build Grond's head. Any clues for me? Quote
Haltiamieli Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Is hijacking other one's topic like this legal? Oh well, me being the first culprit and provocator I suppose I could as well continue my criminal life. I hope Yooha doesn't mind? Or maybe we should move posts by me and Deathleech to start a general topic for Minas Tirith LDD designs? So anyway, I too have continued to bloat my LDD file onwards from the little statuettes and the doors themselves. The whole thing is admittedly closer to Exclusives style than play sets. As of yet there's not even any catapults or other play features. It has about 900 pieces, but of course it is also still missing all the additional details and interiors. And of course there should be Grond too. Quote
djs72 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 That's beautiful work. Love the details of the door, upper wall/walkway sections, etc. I'd be very happy with a smaller, focal section of Minas Tirith done really well such as this, UCS style or no. Quote
Deathleech Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I think I am really starting to understand why Lego has steered clear of a Minas Tirith set so far. We all knew it would be big and require a lot of pieces, but the sheer size and amount of bricks to create anything that still looks like a complete Minas Tirith is just staggering. My model used about 5,350 bricks so far (I added a third row of walls so that's 21 wall sections back there alone), and that's not even including the big mountain, citadel, or white tree in the middle (at least another 2,000-3,000 bricks). It also has no minifigures or catapults. I figure Lego could probably condense my model by using three walls on each side of the gate instead of four, decreasing the height of the gate section by several layers, decreasing the wall height by a few layers, and only using five walls stacked 2x instead of seven stacked 3x. That's 13 less wall sections. Even then you are still looking at 2,800-3,000 bricks, easy, plus another 2,500 from the center. That's roughly a 5,500 piece set, or ~$600. This is for three sections of Minas Tirith mind you and no details inside, no minifigures, and with everything being condensed quite a bit. Quote

Personally I don't see complete Minas Tirith as a feasible set option... or even desirable, really. But actually I was a bit surprised how much I could do with those 900 bricks in my model, especially as there are only eight wall pieces and not that many other big parts either. And Yooha's model is more conservative with the amount of pieces and still manages to look impressive. Quote
Andeh Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Great set, the Grond build is really well done! And the lighting of the beacon is a nice addition to the wall. Quote
Steven Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Im trying for the moment to do a downscaled version of Minas Tirith. The problem is that the citadel is to big in comparison to the rest of the city for the moment. Quote
Trunkbass Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 (edited) @ Steven: Wow, this actually feels like Minas Tirith. I like the size of the citadel. The domes add much to the feel of a city to me. How many pieces did you use? Now if you just find a solution to make a bigger/more credible shiplike-peakthing (the rock, don't know how to call it), it would be an instant buy for me! Edited February 1, 2014 by Trunkbass Quote
Deathleech Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Very nice! I would suggest scaling waaaaay back on the citadel and using the bricks to raise it's height some. Right now it looks like it's just part of the second level? Quote
Steven Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Thanks man! I think that it is something like 1900- 2000 pieces now. So about 1000-2000 pieces more would make it finished. @ Steven: Wow, this actually feels like Minas Tirith. I like the size of the citadel. The domes add much to the feel of a city to me. Steven Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Yes my plan is to rise the third level. I'm no master in Lego Designer so everything takes time for me. The main problem is to make the citadel justice. Making it smaller would in my opinion make it in to small. Very nice! Dayton Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 This would make an awesome set. Very realistic to how Lego would make it also. Quote
