Posted January 16, 201411 yr Maybe it somewhere where it is but I couldn't find it. ... I was wondering for a while if there are Lego sets you can buy in other countries but mine (Netherlands) ? For example, I've seen an Indiana Jones set once, but here I haven't. So I was thinking if Lego introduces some models in different countries ?
January 17, 201411 yr I've been wondering that too. I buy Friends and City, and often find polybags or other interesting bits online that you can't buy here. But then again, NZ generally sucks in terms of Lego!
January 17, 201411 yr Sometimes a set may be officially available worldwide, but much easier to find in one country than another. Fortunately, if you live in a country where a set is either not available or hard to find, you can find sellers online who will ship to you. They may charge a premium but at least you can get it. When I was a KFOL, people didn't have computers at home and there was no internet. You probably didn't know what sets weren't available in your country, and if you did, you would struggle to get foreign sets unless you had friends & family abroad.
January 19, 201411 yr Well this is a very good and very complex question... LEGO set availability "by country". In my Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collector Guide, I show tables for each series of LEGO sets (by System), and here is a cut/paste from my guide on 1980s large Town System sets. This gives you an idea that there is really no rhyme or reason as to why some sets are not sold elsewhere. Nor does TLG tell us very often if a set is only sold in certain areas (aside from Shop At Home)... Even some limited edition sets, such as the 1592 Town Square Set of 1980 & 1983 have a complex distribution. The 1592 was introduced (UK version) in the UK in 1980 as a Weetabix Cereal promotional set. TLG must have had quite a few left over (or did another production run)... since these were sold in Germany by the SPIELZEUGRING retailer organization to their group of independent LEGO retailers starting in late 1980, and also was sold in Canada and Australia in a limited capacity (selling in Sweden has also been suggested, but not confirmed). And then there is the Dutch version of 1592 that was sold in the Netherlands a few years later (1983) as a Unilever Unox Soup promotion. So LEGO distribution is a VERY complex issue.... even today!
January 20, 201411 yr There was a 'China-only' set last year, 10250 was the number. Joe Edited January 20, 201411 yr by Hey Joe
January 21, 201411 yr Do to LEGAL issues some sets can't be sold in countries. Example: the Star Wars dice game could not be sold in the U.S.A. because it was in conflict with another Star Wars licensed company.
January 28, 201411 yr Author Intresting to hear about it, what is availible and where. So there is much more Lego than you thought. Interesting story. Mostly because we have that set, so it's nice to hear about the 'history' of it.
January 29, 201411 yr Thanks Neonic! I love the history of the UK and Dutch version of the 1592. Here (from my LEGO Collectors Guide chapter on promotional sets) is a copy of the UNOX soup ad for the 1592 in the Netherlands... I have a Dutch friend who has 2 brothers. While they were growing up his parents would always have to buy 3 of everything for them. So when the 1592 UNOX promotion came out in 1983, they bought more soup and sent in for 3 of the 1592 sets. Well as it turned out... what came in the mail were 2 of the Dutch 1592 sets, and 1 (older) UK 1592 set! I love hearing stories like this. It shows that TLG still had extra inventory of the 1980 era UK version of the 1592 set, as seen here.... From my Collectors guide... some of the other Dutch LEGO promotions...
January 29, 201411 yr Author That's funny, we have that garage too I think we've eat a lot of soup haha
January 29, 201411 yr Thanks Lego Historian for sharing this. Can't remember seeing this when I was young. Funny to see in the English 1592 set the stand is selling fish and chips and in the Dutch version "soep en worst" (soup and smoked sausages) - the latter being the core business of Unox.
