Look at the title of the film. That's all I'll say

Since the discussion about the price tag of 79018 is still ongoing, consider this: take a look at 75055 Star Destroyer, also a 130$ set that got released this year. It includes 6 minifigures, none of which are entirely new and two of those are even identical (so it's five unique ones). The set contains two new moulds (Imperial Officer hat + Palpatine hologram) and 1359 parts, whereas 79018 has at least seven new moulds which are all immensely bigger than the ones just mentioned, but 500 parts less overall. Does 79018 really feel less substantial than 75055 when keeping this in mind?

Yes it does, you get a huge impressive Spaceship with 75055 while you get some rocks and a playmobil dragon with 79018. You can rave over and over how many new molds Smaug are and the costs for them but it's still LEGOs fault that they screwed the set so badly with a miserable pile of rocks.

I STRONGLY AGREE with the bit about fantasy. Its supposed to look fantastical its fiction and its set in a fantasy world. I like how middle earth looks like fantasy in the hobbit films. The Majestic and huge erebor, the almost frozen in mid winter laketown, the green glow and eerie discoloured look of dol guldur, the elegance of the woodland realm, the psychedelic and hallucinatory atmosphere of mirkwood forest! Perfect! Almost exactly how I imagined it when I read the book. This is a personal preference but I prefer the look of the hobbit movies to the LOTR movies. Somethings in the LOTR movies like minas morgul, mordor and isengard are fantastical in their design but I found the look of that middle earth to be rather grounded a bit too realistic, the dull greens, the worn stone castles just seemed less legendary and more historical. That's my take. Apologies to the moderator for going off topic to movie based discussion.

On topic smaug's lair has grown on me somewhat. Oh and by the way I'm going to LEGOLAND Windsor tomorrow and I heard the goblin king battle and another hobbit set had been discontinued and wondered if theres a chance it could be in the last chance marketplace area as when I went in 2012 I saw some 2011 stuff there. Its just I do not yet have all the dwarves and wondered if that might give me an opportunity to fill some holes in my collection. Thanks :)

i hope you'll find something pal! As for my local toy store they have N-O-T-H-I-N-G, Yes you can get flooded with Star Wars, but they don't seem to give a damn about The Hobbit. Lately i've found a damaged scratched Goblin King battle lying under a Helm's Deep set and then that's it. Every year i order all the sets for Christmas i can't buy them at that store ( and they are much cheaper at Brickshop Online :) but they do still have the smallest Prince of Persia set

Are there any lego parts that have worked like Smaugs wings before? With the elasticity and everything?

I hope this helps you :classic: :

You can see the wings in action

and then there was Bombur rambo in barrel catastrophy, and Lake town orc invasion with Bolg..... so untrue and illogical.

And what if i tell you they made that Bombur scene with stuntpeople? it is possible... and to me it looked great! i loved the Barrel scene and that made me love it 30% more!

Well i would like to see you do it better? and pile of rocks... May i remind you dwarves live in stone halls and inside a LARGE MOUNTAIN

Playmobil dragon have you ever...

@Risgrynsgrot: Playmobil?? Smaug still has quite a lot of studs and consists of 30-40 parts  I'm glad he's not brick-built since it's way more consistent with other animals/creatures (e.g. eagles, wargs, horses etc.). The way I see it, a brick-built version would only work as a huge D2C set :classic:

I don't know where you live so this may not be useful, but the big Toy's R Us in Reading had several goblin king battles for a discounted price last time I was there couple of weeks ago, but they had been sat on the shelf for a while (i'm a regular visitor) so may still be there. They also had the barrel escape and several other sets from the second wave on discount too.

Yep - Legolas surfing down steps on a shield or off the trunks of giant elephants sure was realistic...in retrospect the seeds of some of the Hobbit decisions were clearly evident in the last couple of LOTOR films - which is why Fellowship still remains my favourite as it was much more grounded.

That is just two scenes across three long films. In the Hobbit we pretty much get something like this ever action sequence, or worse the WHOLE scene is this kind of silly nonsense.

I liked Smaug but can understand why many fans felt it lacked suspense. Smaug, an ancient dragon experienced in combat and eradicator of a hauled-up dwarven army, failed to even injure a single dwarf. Understandably, the movie makers had to stay true to the book, so their task was not enviably. The dragon's ineptitude was exacerbated by downright stupidity

Well Smaug had been sleeping for how long when Bilbo woke him up? And it's mentioned he NEVER leaves the mountain? Not only is he probably fat and out of shape from years of doing nothing, he is pretty groggy when the dwarves come after him. Thorin even calls Smaug a slug and constantly taunts him. As for why Smaug was not able to hurt even one dwarf but killed thousands of soldiers? I view that as Thorin and company engaging in a more gorilla warfare type of fighting rather than up front lets try to throw everything we have and try to over power you brute strength style the dwarf soldiers used. In those corridors and small chambers Thorin's style works to their benefit.

Not only that, when Smaug originally attacked Erebor most of the dwarves were caught off guard (kinda like Smaug was with Thorin and company attacking him). They weren't expecting to be attacked and were full of themselves thinking they were invincible so it took them completely by surprise. Imagine Pearl Harbor if it were to be compared to a real life event. You can't underestimate the element of surprise. I always thought it was even more silly in the book Thorin and his company of 12 dwarves, a Hobbit, and a wizard were going to kill Smaug yet they had NO plans on how to do so and seemed even less versed in the ways of combat (they killed very few goblins in Goblin Town and didn't fight the trolls or Mirkwood Spiders pretty much at all). At least in the films the dwarves have some combat skills and Thorin has a clear plan... steal back the Arkenstone so he can use it to unite all the dwarves and then try and face Smaug with the entire dwarven might. In the book the Arkenstone doesn't signify leadership or anything at all, it's just a big pretty stone everyone wants.

Well the Hobbit book was originally a children's novel and when Tolkien wrote LotR he intentionally wrote it more dark and menacing. Regardless I think people are referring more to the action sequences when talking about how cartoony the Hobbit is, not so much the locations or settings. Having mythical creatures and races and even magic is fine in fantasy. That is what it's all about after all. Totally disregarding physics and gravity are another thing. The action sequences in the Hobbit feel more like they are from a super hero movie than a fantasy one. LotR nailed it perfect, the combat was intense and action packed but not ridiculous and unbelievable. You see Legolas doing a FEW crazy things, but you don't see Gimli rolling down the path of Helm's Deep like a Donkey Kong barrel knocking all the Uruk-hai off. In fact that brings up a good point.. Gimli needs Aragorn to throw him from the edge of Helm's Deep to the path cause he can't make the jump... yet in the Hobbit the dwarves are all doing jumps like this and more in Goblin Town :sadnew:

I have yet to see the second installment. The first one left a bitter taste in my mouth, especially after loving LOTR.

I love the Middle Earth license, but it isn't what I expected.

The sets are decent, but I've been buying them for the figures. Even with a bunch of dwarf rehashes, the torsos come in handy for other figures.

Smaug looks good, but I don't like the cost and will wait for a sale. I'm sure there will be one, just have to bide time. I typically would get the whole range for my birthday in December, but I think I will skip that this year and wait it out.

Playmobil dragon have you ever...

I think that's the stuff that really gets to me on this thread..=/

Honestly, though. Have you looked at this thing? Yes, the moulds are very Smaug specific, and the colour is a bit off, but I'm fine with that. It may be small in comparison to film Smaug, but it is a good smaller replica. I cannot wait to get my hands on it. I think it is the best quality and most detailed dragon LEGO has produced.

What struck me most during my first viewing of DoS was "Wow, this is NOT LotR...", but after watching again I realized how great that was. I do prefer the visuals in TH, but I fully understand why LotR is darker, and I like that each film encapsulates the tone through the colour scheme. I love it when films do that.

Yeah, I'm actually planning on buying The Lonely Mountain full-price to support LEGO. I think the set deserves my money.

It's strange to me how much fire the LotR theme has gone under on Eurobricks, because when I see each wave, I am very much impressed by the quality of the sets and figures.

See i differ between fiction with realistic physics and fiction of cartoons or fiction of ''overphysical'' nature......

LOTR has physics in ''check'' being realistic yet its still fictional world and it still has fireball, but you dont see Gimli doing Legolas stunts like Bombur the rambo...... and he is uber fat btw.... so if he is as awesome, what are then other dwarfs.....

Its a bad move in my opinion.... the current dwarves also make Gimli look like a stoned noob in fighting.........

No continuity or anything and we got same director...

There's a cart-y chariot-y thing that I can't tell who's driving it. I saw red, so I assumed Bilbo, but Bilbo doesn't wear red in this movie...

Anyways, maybe we'll see this (or something like it) in the BotFA set?

The iron Hill dwarves ride Goats!!!

AWESOME!!!

WHAT? I didn't notice that! *goes to watch for seventh time*

Posted

Wait, is that Dori riding it?

Oh, I see the goats now... (I thought they were ponies...)

So many armies...I love how different and distinctive they all are, but even the Dol Guldur orcs are super organized.

Posted

I could've sworn on 1:24 archers looked like Gondorians.... I wonder are those elves? Cos Lake town never had an army so it must've been elven archers....

Posted

So that means if TLC put elves in Dale set there will be new elven helmet mold. Thumbs up.

Shame that there is only 4 sets zo come in this final.wave... According to that new teaser trailer for BoFA it deserves at least twice more sets with armybuilders, and add ons to Dale and Erebor.

The dwarves with goats look epic! I hope for a battle goat mold now

For the Dale set i now expect that ice chariot :) it looks EPIC

I believe it was Balin?

DEAR LORD......I NEED THIS MOVIE NOW. I HAVE COMPLETE FAITH IN JACKSON AND AM NOW DYING TO SEE BOTH THE FILM AND SETS!!!!!

I NEED THAT MOVIE NOW :O

Truly breathtaking  Take that, stupid rumor that the Iron Hill dwarves would be cut  Hopefully we'll get one of those goats in 79017

Hahah :head_back: i know right?

Lake-town has a guard force, but they have fish-hats, and the elves have gold armour in the trailer. The ones with Bard do, anyway.

The cahriot was driven by the 4 dwarves we get in smaug set ;)

here I got updated lego/movie comparisons for Fili and Kili. So far it's Thumbs up on the minifigs:

SO which variation of thorin do you guys reckon we'll see. I counted about three in the trailer: Gold armour with crown, Battle armour(might be the same but no cape and crown) when the dwarves are all walking in armour through erebor, Fur coat and chainmail has already been seen in filming photos and in this trailer. Personally I reckon it will be the battle armour seen whilst the dwarves are passing him.
