Firstly calm down boy, and second: there were two groups of elves: one from Tauriels group who wears grean cloaks and the other one on Water gate. I didnt spot any army of armoured elves, if u do, u probably watched a different movie than I did.

P.S. use your hoods for whatever you want to, thats not my bussines :)

Sauron has an army ade of Gundabad orc and wargs. That counts as two different armies. Sauron himself has nothing.

Exactly not on them. But wood elf archer with helmet? You never shoot from bow did you?

You are still speaking nonsense, son. You can not provide any pics of hooded or 'cloaked' elves, because the don't exist. Tauriel's 'group' wears the same clothes she does, not cloaks with hoods. Elfs with hoods are make believe by lego to cheap out and save money.

And who said anything about the helmeted soldiers using bows? Oh, that's right, Peter Jackson did:

Obviously lego decided to not make armored elves, or else they would be wearing armor. That is what I am complaining about, the fact that they chose to invent something not in movie, hooded elves, instead of making armored elves, or even just elves with hair that were in movie.

Your being a little harsh.

Of course he can't get a picture! Why?

Because the movie isn't out on DvD yet. It's still in cinemas!

Do you want him to illegally download the movie just so he can show you the picture of the hooded elves that I know he is talking about?

Not correct, you can see games-woskshop also did alot of the elves with hoods on. In the movie you can see the elves have hoods underneath their hair, they obviously decided not to have them being worn in the movie but they do excist.

Lego did it because they got provided art where the hoods were worn.

As for cloaks, havent seen any of that on the rangers. only on the 2 armored ones.

He's not being harsh. Hooded elves are indeed not in the film and it's Lego's way of cheaping out and making a weak armybuilder character. Elves need either their pointy ears or epic helmets to distinguish them.

$60 BO5A is very depressing. It'll be Dain and likely Bolg, and I bet they'll waste another slot on an armored Company member or something. Lego almost had it right with this wave - swap the Laketown set into the 60 buck slot and throw in more buildings, but the BO5A set in the 30 slot and make it Dain + 5 mooks.

Wondering who will be in the Windlance set though. Since Smaug isn't included, it'll need to have some other sort of 'conflict'. This would actually be a good place to put Bolg (instead of BO5A) since he shows up in Laketown at the end of TDOS, and scene accuracy is irrelevant.

Elronds sword? I think if they make a new sword it would be a generic elven sword, not Elrond specific. Lego made a huge mistake making the 2 handed sword that hasnt fit in any lego set yet, and in gold nontheless.

Yes, sorry if I wasn't clear, I was talking about the two-handed sword, which I'd like to see in a silvery or bley color. Though I would rather see a more accurate sword, if it was up to me.

I don't see this at all. There are plenty of shots of the elves in books and on the net. Are you being serious about 'hoods under their hair.'? They are all dressed the same as Tauriel & Legolas. No hoods. How could they reach the arrows in their quivers if they were covered by a hood? That is much more problematic than eleven archers with helmets.

Of course elves wore hooded cloaks at Helms Deep. And elves generally have hoods, like Elrond or Arwen, etc. But they removed the entire cloak before fighting. And no hoods were worn in the movie, which is the important bit, and I want minifigs that are based on characters and events in the movie. This is not being unreasonable. It seems like wearing a hood under a quiver would be very risky, as the act of throwing back the hood could hook it on the arrows. I can't understand how that makes any sense at all.

Maybe 500 years of practice makes elves good at archery in helmets!

I think the BO5A set will contain Bolg, Dain, 2 Iron Hill Dwarves and Beorn in bear form. And maybe some elves.

I never quite understood this criticism. While no hooded Elves appear in DOS as far as I recall, people are acting like hooded Elves are an impossibility. Why can't Elves in general wear hoods? After all, an Elf wearing a helmet would be indistinguishable from a human wearing a helmet, so why can't the same apply to hoods? I myself see hoods as a very Elvish type of headgear. Not that I'm begrudging you guys, hairpieces in other haircolors would be neat, though not being an Elf-collector or fleshie collector I can't really appreciate it. Helmets, on the other hand, would be inappropriate for these scouts. It's just odd to hear the arguement apporached from this angle of Elves not being Elves if they wear hoods.

Plus if I recall DOS all of the elves in the action scenes other than tauriel and legolas pretty much had brown hair. The elf without the hood in MEA is identical to the ones in the movie' action scenes. The helmeted armoured ones did practically nothing except be slaughtered by orcs, Stand still or run along a bridge shouting something in elvish. Lego is usually given some details of sequences/characters and either concept art or set photos or production stills so the concept art elves might have had hoods. It wasn't a cheap out It was merely working what they got given by WB. Clearly they have been given a bit more detail this time round as the sets seem to be scene based rather than random scenarios like Lego did with mirkwood tree wall. All of 2012's sets were based on events from DOS and AUJ and they were better for it. I'm Glad 2014's sets seem to be following that good example. Roll on October.

That's some deep hood discussion. If I understood correctly, greenalfonzo is just pointing out that hooded elf minifigs could have been a smart move Lego made in order to lower a bit the production costs and that most of the elves in the film do not use their hoods on when fighting, since it would obviously compromise not only their bow skills but also their peripheral sight. At the other hand, perhaps some elves are just too shy to take the hoods off.

Nobrux, I agree on the in-depth hood discussions. Good analysis here of the hood crisis. I'm happy at least we've moved on from the windlass debate. Sorry guys, just having some fun. :) Can't wait for some pics and then we can get a bit of a break from speculation and on to some actual analysis. When is the earliest we might see images of all this drool-worthy stuff?

As deskp said quivers are on their sides/waists not back. It is lego's choice if they want to use back quivers but it is not accurate.

The importance of an elvish helm is due to the fact that elves in both LOTR and the Hobbit have been shown to wear helmets. Despite these many film occurrences we still have never seen an elf helmet mold in lego. Many of us would like to see these made so we can finally recreate a generic elf soldier as most Elven heroes eschew headgear.

If lego did decide to reuse Mirkwood Elves from MEA for Battle of Five Armies they may as well reuse Gundabad orcs instead of Dol Guldur orcs and Laketown guards instead of Laketown villagers. Sounds like a rather underwhelming and uninspiring set if that is the case.

Posted (edited)

First off why are we arguing if the Mirkwood Elves in the MEA set should have hoods or not? Have you guys seen the set..? The hoods are the least of it's problems. I don't remember Thranduil being outdoors fighting orcs, brown Wargs at an elven wall, or heck, that gate AT ALL in the movie. Seriously, the hoods are the least of our worries. It's like the Mordor Orcs in the Pirate Ship and Black Gate set, they are totally wrong but Lego didn't care, it saved them money. I'm guessing Lego had hoods in the set so they could use a quiver with them like Seaber points out (which is another issue in itself, elf hair that can't accommodate a quiver? Really Lego...?). Just throwing 3 hair pieces in wouldn't of worked either since they need bows and quivers.

As for the Bo5A, it refers to the five separate armies BEFORE the battle began. That was 1.) elves 2.) dwarves and 3.) humans. They were all separate armies. How would they be considered one army when they were literally ready to do battle with each other before the evil forces showed up? They banded together when the 4.) orcs, wargs, and bats came. The evil forces are all considered one army since they were working together from the start and never separate armies that formed together to combat the enemy. The Eagles were the fifth and final army. They weren't aligned with anyone and just helped the forces of good since they hated the orcs and wargs. They are described as neutral good. If the Wargs and Orcs were considered two separate armies, why wouldn't the bats considered a third separate army? Technically then it should be the battle of seven armies by that logic, no? Dwarves, elves, men, orcs, eagles, bats, and wargs...

I actually feel the opposite as others do in regards to the new info about the TABA sets. I feel like it's going to be a pretty lame wave. Just based on Lego's past Middle-Earth offerings, I don't see the $60 Bo5A set as an army builder at all. I mean to be a good army builder it would need like 12 minifigures and 2 molded creatures (twice the price of the $30 set so twice the minifigures..?). I have a feeling it is going to be more along the lines of Black Gates where it only has 5 figs and is loaded with unique characters (Bolg, Dain, etc.)/ No one is going to want to buy more than one even if it includes several armored soldiers. The $30 Lake-town set sounds pretty boring and Erebor with dwarf rehashes is rag tag gear is very unappealing to me.

The ONLY bright side from all of this is the higher possibility of a Gondor Soldier army builder? It seems like Lego has given us an army builder every other Middle-Earth wave. If the waves were split, that means the second LotR wave didn't get an army builder so the third should hopefully? If it get's released that is...

It's funny someone was complaining about a few posts involving the windlance which is actually in a set. Talking about hoods it definitely more interesting.

For full disclosure I'm not wearing a hood, but then again I'm not,an elf.

The forces of evil are considered 1 army... this includes Orcs, Wargs, Bats & whatever else might show up with them. Add Dwarves, Men, Elves & Eagles.

As for Hobbit sets, I think these are pretty cool. I can't quite give my full opinion until after seeing the final movie. I hope there won't be some sets I will really want after the movie if this is indeed the final wave. But all in all as of right now the Hobbit has gotten a more ~complete~ collection of sets than LotR (to date, lets hope I'm wrong *cough* Treebeard *cough* Balrog *cough* Witch King Fell Beast *cough*)...

I'm excited to see them.

My understanding is the orcs and wargs are considered separate armies in the term battle of five armies. The eagles fight but are not considered an army in of themselves. The orcs and wargs are considered the enemy of all thus uniting the men, elves and dwarves.

Perhaps the term battle of four armies would be better suited but then again I'm not Tolkien.

Am I alone in thinking we really need to put the entirety of the LotR and Hobbit Lego fanbase around here on caffeine restrictions. You guys are getting way way way too highly strung out over the pickiest little things. These are playsets. They are not perfect scale reproductions of on screen specifics. Yes it would be nice to have an elven helm. But I can respect that that involves questions of "how much will they use it?", and "is it an identifiable license restricted part (like Stormtrooper helms) or something we can re use?" etc. At this point I will be happy for more sets. new helms would be a nice bonus, but not something worth stressing over.

The breakdown according to the leaked TABA production materials seems to be these 5. Dwarves, Humans, Elves, Orcs and Eagles. At least those are the ones that show up in the marketing picture describing the 5 armies. Worgs are just mounts and not an Army unto themselves. I think the Eagles are probably only considered one because Gandalf is leading them.

I was referencing the actual book. Hadn't heard about TABA parsing. Thank you.

That is incorrect. From the LotR Wiki:

"Soon the Goblins, Wargs, and a cloud of Bats "like a sea of locusts" arrived (and now four armies were on the field)" - the other three obviously being men, dwarves, and elves

"As the battle was turning fully against the Free Folk, a number of Giant Eagles of the Misty Mountains arrived (the fifth army), led by Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles"

If the Wargs and Orcs were considered two separate armies, then why weren't the bats like I said before? Sauron's forces are almost ALWAYS referred to as just one single entity despite usually being made up of several factions. For instance the War of the Last Alliance refers to the alliance between men and elves, and to a lesser extent the dwarves. It doesn't refer to the alliance between orcs, Haradrim, Easterlings etc. who were there.
