AFOLguy1970 Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Smaug is actually much smaller than he would be when compared to the size of the minifigures. Lego has however, made him large enough to still be impressive. Having a minifig scale of Smaug would produce a creature larger than most of us could afford or even display. If they used the parts from Smaug to make the Fell Beast, it would actually be closer to the minifig scale. Sure, Smaug and the Fell Beast are not the same size, but a Fell Beast made from that mold would in theory be most welcome. Quote
Hypernova888 Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 (edited) If they made a fell beast (with a Witch King on his back) the same size as Smaug, I'd buy it. Have you ever placed Frodo or Bilbo next to Gandalf and realised the scale is not quite right? That happens with Lego, but for the most part looks fine. Well then that would make Smaug-who's supposed to be one of if not the biggest creature(s) in Moddle-Earth-would be the same size as something maybe 1/5 at best of his size. If one normal minifigure is 5', then at the biggest LEGO Smaug would be 100 TIMES THAT! As Smaug is somewhere roughly in between 450' and 500'. 28 or 29 I thought it was more like 35. EDIT: If I counted correctly in my head, the number is 35. Edited October 28, 2014 by Hypernova888 Quote

If Lego used Smaug for a fell beast the scale would be off, but Legos scale is always off to some degree. It could also be that Lego could shrink the Smaug torso to make a fell beast torso, as it's easier to reduce the size of a mold then create a brand new one. Quote

Yes, I realize the scale isn't perfect with Lego. The Eagles are probably the worst offender, being MUCH smaller scale compared to the minifigures than they are in the movies. I know Smaug isn't perfect size either and is much smaller than he should be. My point is he is still a rather large Lego creature. MUCH larger than Lego would do a Fel Beast (if the video game is any indication). Lego tends to shrink the size of molded creatures to save money, not make them bigger in scale then they actually are. It would look really weird if Lego had Smaug who is relatively big, but still shrunk in Lego form, and then used a bunch of his pieces in black to make a Fel Beast who would be nearly the same size and actually bigger scale than he is in the movies. SMC Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 ^ I do take your point but I don't think fel beast would be out of scale to the movie and would look really cool just don't put them next to each other I mean look at lego mice and cats they are the same size. Quote

This is exactly what would bug me if the Smaug mold was used as a fell beast - the relative scale between them. Yes, LEGO scale is off, but Smaug is still much larger than a minifig, and he should be rather larger than a fell beast. And actually, the newer cats from the CMF line are reasonably larger than the rats. The rats were the same size as the kittens exported from Belville, which isnt that unrealistic, as rats can reach kitten size. Just thought Id mention it as an example of TLG "righting a wrong" by making the new cat mold and making a reasonable size disparity between cats and rats. So a fell beast should get the same treatment. Of course, a Smaug-sized fell beast (with the appropriate minifigs) would be better than none. Quote

Ok, and what if you want to use the Fel Beast and the eagles together to recreate some LotR scenes? The eagles would be like a fourth or fifth the Fel Beast size if they used Smaug parts. It would look ridiculous. I think people are forgetting just how big Smaug is in the movies. If you look at the picture below, you see Bilbo is barely bigger than his teeth. Now compare that to this picture of Frodo standing in front of a Fel Beast, or Gandalf facing one. The Fel Beast head is like half the size, or a third the size of a human. The scale isn't remotely close. Quote
Steph 104th Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 These pictures convey it perfectly, Bilbo is about the size of Smaugs largest teeth. Quote
Zzz Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 The entire LotR / Hobbit theme seems to be ending with this wave and for a theme being so focused on large battles it's very strange we never got any battle pack. I'm not counting the 40€ sets because honestly that is rather expensive. Quote
cullmancreations Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 (edited) Well I bet Lego knew from the getgo that if they were going to make a semi affordable molded Smuag it wasn't going to be proportional. I am happy with the Smaug we got though proportional or not it is still much bigger than a minifig Edited October 28, 2014 by cullmancreations Quote
Artanis I Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) The fell beast doesn't have to use all of the same parts as Smaug. It would require a new head, unless something from Ninjago is appropriate. It doesn't need as long a neck or tail. It could use the Castle wings or legs or whatever. However it went, a few of his parts could be reused and it could still be a reasonable size difference. Reusing the Castle dragon is a better plan than reusing Smaug, however. Blazej_Holen Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) 1. Castle dragon is really bad lego creature in every kind of way you can imagine. Wings are simply awfull. 2. This should be hobbit thread so its better to discuss here topics asociated with Lego Hobbit. This is not one of them. For that you can use Lotr thread. :) Edited October 29, 2014 by Blazej_Holen Quote

Blazej_Holen Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 I think not, i liked that dragon... I can understand that, and I know that Castle theme is mostly for kids (or younger kids) so therefore it looks so fairy and colorful. Thats the reason that he dragon looks ... like kinda cheasy. But thats only my opinion :) On the contrary, Hobbit / Lotr theme is more darker and more serious, (figs, structures etc) and Smaug is simply king of all dragons that TLG ever made. He is true king under the mountain :) Quote

cullmancreations Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Seriously. I was about to check today. That's disappointing Quote
Blazej_Holen Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 If I remember well last year there was those videos at the same time as the sets was released right? So this is another proof that TLG throw all Middle earth theme to the trash... :( Quote
cullmancreations Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Yeah they put the vids up as soon as the sets came out, but didn't they get the Brotherhood workshop to do a video showcasing Smaug for them. maybe they had a change of heart more recently Quote
Blazej_Holen Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Yep but BW did just a vid with Smaug... The rest of the sets remains without commercial or some introduction to us (fans and customers)... Quote
Hypernova888 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Well, maybe they'll start doing those things later, more around when the film is actually supposed to come out. Quote
