cullmancreations Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Maybe but why would they release them so early. with the previous two waves of the Hobbit they were released around the last week or two of November when the movie hype train is rolling. Quote
Artanis I Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I only just realised that all of the orcs this wave are new. Well, that hairpiece and the faces. Sure they look really similar, but they're different enough from what we already had. Torso variation probably would've been better, but 1 crumb is better than none. Quote

AFOLguy1970 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Maybe but why would they release them so early. with the previous two waves of the Hobbit they were released around the last week or two of November when the movie hype train is rolling. The problem in the last couple of years was that the release time was too close to Christmas. It was almost impossible to find the sets, especially Bag End this side of Christmas when AUJ came out. Walmart and Target did not have the sets, and several of them quickly went out of stock on the online site. Having the sets come out earlier gives an advantage for those who can plan ahead to get the sets and ensure they have them to present as gifts. At least where I live, there is definitely a lag when it comes to the sets appearing in the main stores. Walmart has none of the sets, and I saw literally one Witch King and BOFA at Target. Lonely Mountain is currently Out of Stock on the US site. I would rather see the shortages now than in mid December when everyone is looking for them. The only reason I got Bag End for Christmas a couple of years ago was because it was hidden behind other items at the store and my son just happened to find it. Quote
Blakstone Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Hobbit wave 3 has not shown up at any of my local Walmarts either. Only the two smallest sets are available at my Targets. You have to go to Toys R Us or The LEGO Store to find them all in OKC. The next few weeks will show if the local Walmarts will carry them at all or if they will pass this wave. Quote
bachamn Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 The next few weeks will show if the local Walmarts will carry them at all or if they will pass this wave. I thought it was curious too; they're available on Walmart's website but I've not seen them in stores yet, either. Quote
MAB Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Yep but BW did just a vid with Smaug... The rest of the sets remains without commercial or some introduction to us (fans and customers)... It may be that the videos don't help sales much, and that community engagement can be done in other ways. For exampe, sending out review sets to the multitude of lego bloggers and youtube users that they already use to spread user reviews rather than official views of the sets. Quote
Blazej_Holen Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 MAybe, but I thing that more than that, Desi´gners are no more intrested in Middle earth theme. Make a videos to say goosby should be automatic gesture of polite to the fans... This is just "we dont care about this any more, thats why we made those choices (figs structures..) and thats why some sets look cheasy and unfinished... because we dont care. " Quote
MAB Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I doubt it is the designer that make the decision as to whether a video is put out. I also doubt the designers of the sets that purposely make something substandard (in the fans' eyes). Quote
Hypernova888 Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I really doubt that the designers, or LEGO don't care about the theme. I'm sure that it just makes business sense to them to end it. Quote
kevkipo Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I do think the designers care, you saw that those guys loved the theme. Lego made the decision not the designers! Quote
Tjahzi Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Bit disappointed with the pricing of the new sets... € 140 for the Smaug-set, around 650 bricks vs Battle at the Black Gate, € 80 and 656 bricks. I think I'm going to wait for a price drop in a local shop, hehe. Quote
mrbean Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 For those that have Smaug already, how durable are his wings? They look really fragile to me and I'm worried they'll tear, or wear out at the joints or something. That's why I'm also contemplating buying the Castle dragon, which has more rugged wings. I'm also liking the Castle dragon wings more because the attachment pieces can just be replaced if they wear out, and they could also be used to make something like a Balrog. Quote
Sir Gareth Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 The wings are a rubbery material, so tearing them would be rather difficult. I do worry though, that the joints will wear out over time. Quote

Yes, the rubbery part of the wings is very sturdy. The only section of the wings I'm worried about is the thin connection to the ball-joint. I winced when I had to pop the wings back off to box Mr. Smaug for my move. I think that barring any accidental drops to the ground though he should stand the test of time. Quote

If your walmarts are like the one near me they have a small selection of Legos in general. Probably less that half of what my target carries. Though another target near me has yet to carry the wave 3 either and I see no room for them to go. Even the end caps are crammed full of new toys for the holidays. Quote
namioik Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Not to brag, but I just got the smaug set for $100 usd. Fair price? Quote

Does that statement mean it will stand up to a 7 year old playing with it? The part that looked really fragile to me is the joint where the wings fold. I'm also worrying a bit that the ball joints will be too loose and the wings will start drooping from their own weight. Quote

Deathleech Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Not to brag, but I just got the smaug set for $100 usd. Fair price? Not bad. About 23% off. I am waiting till closer to Thanksgiving when I am sure tons of Lego deals will be going on. I want to get the whole wave for at least 25%+ off. None of the sets are must haves for me so I can wait as long as needed... Quote

The part that looked really fragile to me is the joint where the wings fold. I'm also worrying a bit that the ball joints will be too loose and the wings will start drooping from their own weight. I do not let my 6 or 7 year old kids play with Smaug over fear of the area around the joints being too fragile. Honestly, I would prefer not to manipulate the ball joints at all. Likely, Smaug will never be taken apart, at least not where the wings attach to the body. It is impressive how Lego merged the plastic area into the rubber area, but it somehow strikes me as risking a tear if that area is handled too much. I could be wrong, but why take a chance? Quote
HawkLord Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I'm concerned with the rubbery material drying out over time and cracking. I have some concern with the section where the wings overlap, but I think I'll always have the wings folded out all the time anyway. Otherwise, he seems sturdy enough in the joints. Quote

I wouldn't let my kids play with it unsupervised. I do think a 7 year old playing with it gently would be no problem. Or always playing at a table or sitting rather than flying it around the house like a 7 year old me would've been wont to do. Quote
