Um, "cough, Bolg, cough"

I understand why the Witch King is important (Fell Beast and helmet) but Bolg actually probably had more screentime.

I admit that the lack of Bolg is not nice, but not a big deal either imo. The top hierarchy of evil in the Hobbit movies is well represented, not perfectly good, but good enough. At least, and I think you will give me that, it is better represented than the evil commanders in the LotR-series.

Perhaps my opinion is also a bit biased because I dislike the film character of Bolg. Looks like they needed yet another big Orc to be a credible threat, more dangerous than the regular Orcs. So they cloned Azog. (And yes I know, this has some basis in the written works, being the son of Azog).

You can use it man, ill make a bigger pic

Thanks! I don't need it a ton now...zooming in helps loads! Thanks.

I honestly feared for any of the characters that came across Bolg or Azog...even more than, say, The Necromancer or Smaug. Every fight scene with either of the two was nerve-wracking for me.

Now knowing the range of sets for LOTR and the Hobbit, what sets are the best ones? (Is this the right thread to ask in?) As usual, I'm late to the game and only have An Unexpected Gathering, plus the Council of Elrond and Helm's Deep on their way to me. Is Orthanc a must have? A bunch of the sets appeal to me but I can't afford everything.

Orthanc is definitelly MUST have set :) You dont have to ask about it just take a look on some reviews :) Firstly I pick up only few sets, now I miss only 3 from LOTR line and 4 from Hobbit (including 2 sets from new wave.) I am really sad thought because I didnt get Mines of Moria set when I can, and now its price is almost double... :(

Yes, weirdly I did. Glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I think it was the mix of his armour and beard. Still, he was my favourite character in the entire film, if only for what he said at the start if the film.

He is CGI, thats official.

Yes, the Orthanc is a must have.

P.S.Here is a Boar design I saw ,that I copied, but I made it 4 studs wide and added tusk.

I have found a few of the Mines of Moria sets for close to original price from the EU.

Thought you guys'd be interested in seeing my designs on a couple of things...

First off is my kind-of custom/stolen boar, of course mostly designed by Kevkipo! I added in a saddle, and had to use the 1x1 tooth pieces, and not those awesome boar tusks that Kev originally used. They do well to cover up the black 1x1 brick with two side studs that I had to use, as I once again do not have the same parts collections as he.

And since I didn't know what the back was like I did my own.

Next up is my custom design for Thranduil's moose. I built it kind of around the dimensions of a horse, except altering the size...because it's an elk, not a horse.

Here's the left antler removed for the benefit of viewing construction methods.

And I thought you guys'd like this...I made this about a year ago, and even though I'd rather have Bolg than an armoured Sauron, he was still cool to have.

I used the Kingdoms dragon knight's torso and legs for a more metal-y look, and made my own simple custom decal for the face (which I should really redo). The chestplate is only added in there to give him that gunmetal grey tone, even though I prefer him without it (in terms of stability). The head is built around a dalek, and uses those claw hand weapon things that I don't know the name of. His height is altered by means of headlight bricks with cheese slopes ( cheese slopes) in the light under his feet, secured to the leg piece with two 1x2 plates in black, one on each leg. A robot claw is stuck through the top.

Here's the back (cape removed) where you can see the 1x2 plates in action, and the 1x1 tooth piece on the back of his helm.

So...what'd you guys think? Feel free to steal any of these designs! Only thing is...I have an epic boar, and no Dain to ride it! I'll have to wait until my sets arrive...

I was admiring both your creations and wondering where he got those tusks from, then realized I could just remove the helmet horns from the Hun Warrior from CMF 12. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

One simple polybag could fill the biggest gap, but apparently there's no incentive for TLG to do so :sceptic:

I'd take a simple polybag filled with Bolg, an armoured elf, an armoured dwarf, a Gondor soldier, Eowyn, the Witch King and Faramir.

First off, I was referring to the Hobbit theme in particular and not Middle-Earth as a whole (this is the Hobbit thread after all) and secondly, I consider Bolg to be a much more grave omission than a nameless elf/dwarf soldier  But you're right, those are all glaring holes in our collections :hmpf_bad:

Thanks so much, guys! Kev, all I did to fit a sadwas replace your jumper and clip with a 1x2 tile! I only did it because I was using all my clips, and then I tried a saddle and it worked! But I'm glad I couls get something of my own design in there. ;)

As unlikely as it is, what would you guys think about a microscale line?

Denethor would also be great, but Faramir and Eowyn are more important.

Hmm, i dont see why that wouldn't work :sweet:

Ooh! I forgot: now that we've seen the film, what about the ballista in BoFA? Seems a bit wrong. As does Beorn in DGA!

They did film Beorn tortored by Bold in dol guldur way back when the mvoies were diferent. there was later talk that beorn would be captured at dol guldur and released by radagast (presumably right before bo5a)

The important part is that we got Beorn though!

Ah! Everything just fell into place. Last year when I googled the Desolation of Smaug I read an interview where the actor who played Beorn mentioned a difficult torture scene, but I thought that was the adaption of his capture of a warg and an Orc from the book. I should have put two and two together when I also read how "epic Bolg" (the non CGI one) tortures someome. That sounds like a much better introduction of the characters than what actually happened. I wonder if that scene will ever see the light of day?

BTW, Surprised yesterday when I visited my local Toys"R"Us and only the two cheapest new Hobbit sets were there, squashed between DC and Marvel. Hope it's just because of Christmas sales.

Could you please give me an idea on how the custom boars were created? Obviously the pictures are no good to me as i cant see and I'm terabol at creating custom animals.

I'll do my best:

The legs are done by use of two 1x2 waved profile bricks, and are set underneath a 2x4 plate. On each end of the plate are four headlight bricks, two on each side. Behind one of the pairs of the headlights, set a 1x2 brick on the inside. On the outside of the structure, your headlight brick's studs should be. On each side, place a horizontal jumper tile. On the end with the brick, put a cheese slope sloping downwards. On top of the fat end, set a 2x2 tile, and on the thin end set a 1x2 tile. All bricks up to this point are brown. In the remaining space on the 2x4, put in a grey saddle. Inside this saddle put a 1x2 plate of any colour as a booster seat for dwarves. For the head, stack two brown 1x2 plates on top of each other, then put a brown cheese slope facing into the second stud on top. Then put on the open stud a 1x1 brick with two studs on the side, and face the side-studs to the long sides of your head build. If you have the curled horn pieces like Kev, set them inside the two stud holes. If you only have the tooth plate piece, like me, then put those on, then set a 1x1 plate on top of the brick. If you have the horns like Kevkipo, then skip this plate. Then add another cheese slope (brown) facing inwards, the opposite way from the the first slope.

Turn this build on its side, with the long part being the downmost. Place this on the free jumper on the original 2x4 body build.

I really hope this was clear! Sorry if it wasn't.

So I saw the movie a couple days ago. I loved every second of it! However, its sadly made me bitter about these sets. Mainly the Battle of Five Armies set. I've done some thinking, and have come of with an alternate version of this wave with an extra set or two.

The Lonely Mountain: This set is perfect in my opinion. However, switch the Bilbo fig for the crowned Thorin we got and thats much better.

Attack on Lake-Town: This set is also fine. No need to change it.

Witch-King Battle: Should've been bigger and included two of the Nazgul in their ghostly Second Age outfits.

Now here is where I think we needed an extra set. Rather than have one Battle of Five Armies set, split it in to three sets that focus on the three main areas of the fight:

The Ruins of Dale: The build itself could be the same as Battle of Five Armies, with the tower and such, but remove the ballista and replace it with a catapult troll. The figs could be Bard, Alfrid, Percy, and four armoured Gundabad orcs, and Gwahir.

Battle for Erebor: This could have the ruined gates of Erebor, and include Dain, Thranduil in armour, two armoured Iron Hill dwarves, two armoured Mirkwood elves, four armoured Gundabad orcs and an armoured troll.

Duel at Ravenhill: Obviously depicting the climax of the film, the set could include Thorin in his battle outfit, Azog in his armour, Bilbo, Legolas and Bolg, and maybe a couple big bats for something to chase Bilbo.

If LEGO had had access to more detailed and accurate materials before they designed the sets, and made more sets, this is what I'd want to see. But alas, this will never happen.

Wow, the amount of agreement here

Ruins of Dale, Mountain troll, Percy, Alfrid, Bard couldn't agree more!

Battle for Erebor, Maybe include some of the other dwarves? or not cause the Iron Hill dwarves are awesome

Duel at Ravenhill, Include ze Ram! for the rest it is perfect!

Oh now i want all of this :sadnew:
