Still about the Lake Town soldier, I'm really glad we got him.. To be honest, I think it's the faction of the LOTR/Hobbit world that is more accurate when you think about sizes... I mean, I have Mordor orcs, Rohan soldiers and Gundabad Orcs, all terribly represented when you think in numbers... But with a few bricklinked lake town soldiers I think this faction is well represented...

And there are 2 lake town soldiers: 1 in the set, and 1 in the polybag, and that's where your theory about "thousands to make 1 mold used once" goes down... I've seen a lot of people with quite a good army of them..

Ok, i didn't know about the one in a polybag  But to me it still doesn't excuse them from making such strange decisions

And i'm not sure if that one guy will return all those costs that easily. I mean, how many of these battle packs could they have made and how many do they need to sale?

Attack on Lake-town - an okay set. The structure itself does not fit the style of the previous Lake-town set, I feel. I also hate how one part of the green roof is left exposed. However, he new hairpieces for the Hunter Orcs and the inclusion of Bain is great. The set also has a lot of features, and the Black Arrow contraption has great power and aim.

The Lonely Mountain - My favorite one. Smaug, despite his inaccurate size, is simply amazing and has all the right details, right down to the gilded belly. And the sand green that comprised most of the build is much less inoffensive than I expected. I plan on adding some more treasure, but otherwise I don't plan to alter a lot.

Since you got both of em could You tell more about extra parts, anything special about the lonely mountain set aside from the dragon?

I mean, i don't want to pay that much to get Smaug, cause i'm sure i'm not really going to use him often.

Of course i could always sell it back, but i don't really have time to waste it on ebays and other amazons. So i would probably buy this set for parts and figures, but i'm not sure if it's worth it

About Attack on Laketown set - i bet that this black arrow thing could make a pretty nice balista, would need more of them though.

Actually I don't know too how many polybags they made... I can say I never saw them here in Brazil :cry_sad: (I had to bricklink them, but for a nice price...) But I get your point, TLG should focus at making new molds for pieces that could be easily used again in the future..

The most notable parts for me on the Lonely Mountain set, aside from Smaug and the minifigures, are the Arkenstone itself, the catapult, and the moveable wheel with the basket. There's also a section in the back that hides the Arkenstone when it's not on the throne. For extra parts, I was surprised to find an extra 1x1 round clear tile with the gem printing used for the Arkenstone. It might be useful for other gem decorations. Even if you don't like the set as is, you get tons of pearl gold, dark grey and sand green elements, as well as rock/earth pieces, all of which would be useful for other creations.

The Black Arrow launcher would make a great ballista - you just press down on the missile and it really flies!

It was "lazy" for TLG to use two rowboats for a longboat? I think that that usage was a genius way to do it when the technique was first used, and I'm glad they used it again. Why make a longboat piece when the alternative is so clever and looks as good as it does? And that way if one scraps the set for parts they get two rowboats, which are a lot more versatile than one huge longboat.

So far I've collected all the LOTR and Hobbit sets, except for the newest wave. All my previous sets I bought at 20% off, which is about as good as it gets in Canada. I'm starting to feel nervous though, as the newest wave isn't available online at any of the usual retailers like TRU, chapters, or amazon.ca. The newest wave also doesn't show up in the 2015 catalogue. The sets were released in mid October so I feel I should still have time to wait for a sale, but I'm starting to get a bit antsy. When is the soonest we could expect this theme to end, and is there likely to be any sort of warning that the end is coming?

If anybody else is waiting to pick up these sets for a discount, just curious what your plans are.

The UK seems quite similar at the moment: amazon seems out of stock, and no-where sells the sets. Last year, the sets went on discount at Easter, which seemed to be an end of stock/clearance sale. Whether this will happen again this year, however, I'm not as sure...

As others pointed out it's really difficult to say if the sets will be on sale once. Due to the fact that the current wave isn't in the latest catalogue I wouldn't wait much longer for a sale.

In Austria the situation is quite similar: They are out of stock on amazon and many other toy shops.

At my Lego store we have plenty

But i would buy them while you still have the time, at least 3 out of 4 are worth the price, i gotta hurry on Witch King battle

So finally saw the movie. I can sort of feel the complaints about armoured elves, but I still feel the ones we got in Mirkwood were fine. We definitely are missing a Ravenhill set, though, with Bolg, Iron Hill dwarves, perhaps Alfrid and definitely more orcs. Beorn as a bear would be nice.

Lonely Mountain and Battle of the five armies set are on the Top of my list! But now I have to prefer Uruk Hai Army set while it is on the shelevs at some shops, to enlarge my Uruks and Rohan (I have only 24 Uruk Hai and 6 Rohan soldiers along with 2 Eomers and 1 Theoden). Then those two sets from last wave and thats basicaly it if there wont be any more sets to produce. :(

Next project of mine will be Ravenhill Tower, thanks to Anduin to share his creation now I have enough inspiration for my own creation :)

I also miss those armored elves alonf´g with Dwarves and Orcs, but orcs could be replaced, my 17 Elven scouts can easily work as Mirkwood army, but Dwarves are man problem. Since we had only one Dain helmet in each set, its little bit pricey to obtain more of them from BL, and frankly I dont want to create dwarven Army from current dwarves form Fantasy Era or Gimli fig. :(

Damn.

I'm still missing the Lake Town Chase, i can't find it anywhere online, everywhere it seems oddly sold out. Sadly I think it might end up being the one set of the wave i can't get, which is a shame cause it includes some great exclusive figures and would work really well combined with the lake town attack.

That's a right shame. It maks AoLT look loads better, and is one of my favourite Hobbit sets.

Your right, it's really a pity that we didin't get a Ironhill soldier. Unfortunately the Dain helmet doesn't work with the plume and it's a quite expensive figure, too. So kitbashing a accurate Ironhill army is nearly impossible

Now that I have seen the movie, it really seems like Lego did not have a lot of inside information to the final movie. The Mirkwood Elf Army is a nice set, but they look nothing like any elf I saw in the movie. Nothing even comes close to an armored Mirkwood elf. Someone will make a lot of money customizing one, along with Gondor soldier, Witch King, etc. The lack of Iron Hill dwarves is also puzzling. We have a lot of orc varients, so I do not think that is really a problem. Seeing the movie changes my opinion on the sets...

Witch King battle--definitely a nice set. The characters are great. Galadriel and Elrond seem accurate to the movie. I like the Witch King, however he seems like the one we saw in AUJ rather than the semi transparent one in BOFA.

Attack on Lake Town--Smaug really, really should have been in this set. Bain, Bard, and Smaug would suffice along with the bell tower. That would have also made it cheaper to get Smaug.

Lonely Mountain--As discussed, the absence of Thorin is especially puzzling. The build is nice, and the colors are good. I would have left Smaug out, and had Thorin, Dain, and the armored dwarf variants here.

BOFA---No better evidence than this set that Lego did not get all the details before producing the set. I somehow missed the importance of the ballista. Also, the whole confrontation with Azog did not occur in Dale. If they could leave Gandalf out because they assumed we already had him, why could they not have done the same with Legolas and Tauriel? Thranduil clearly should have Legolas' spot as the Elvenking. Azog does not have the sword/arm, and Thorin only wore the crown in the Lonely Mountain while he was suffering from dragon sickness. No one fought with a golden sword either, because gold is a soft metal. :classic: I really wonder if Lego was forbidden to make battle packs. I would think that kids who saw the movie would love to form a small army or armored elves, IH dwarves, men of Lake Town, and orcs. As others have stated, I think there should have been another set with the vital missing generic good guys. Seriously, if there was ever a time for a battle pack, it would have been this wave. You could have the large set with the leaders, and then the smaller battle pack with the soldiers. Now you have a set depicting a battle of five armies made up of a grand total of 7 people.

Each set has some nice elements, but like LOTR, I think this was mishandled at least to some degree unless Lego really had their hands tied in this one.

I just noticed that Benny's Spaceship is also not in the 2015 catalogue. This set was released this summer, and I imagine Lego will be making it for a long time yet. So does the absence of a set from the catalogue actually mean anything? I originally thought stores could only order what was in the catalogue, but the lack of the popular spaceship set seems to invalidate that theory.

Benny's Spaceship is in the Australia/New Zealand catalogue, but there is no sign of any The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings sets. This means that the only sign of the Battle of the Five Armies sets was the one-page picture of Bard with promises of 'coming in October' in the 2013 July-December catalogue.

Strange, we have LOTR and Hobbit sets in our 2015 catalogue. And there's plenty enough sets from Battle of five armies on sale. Yesterday I even found few 79004 sets, but didn't decide, should I take it or not )

Posted (edited)

You do? LotR sets as well? I haven't seen any BofA sets in local stores at all; I had to order the three smaller sets online with store pickup. Strangely, Barrel escape is the only Hobbit set I am missing, along with the largest set from each wave.

My mistake. No LOTR in catalogue, only hobbit. But there's some LOTR sets (79005, 79007, 79008, 10237 and few other) in online shops and 79006 in local Lego store. Same thing with Hobbit. There is some sets in online shops and few in local Lego store.

Strangely, Barrel escape is the only Hobbit set I am missing.

There's few in local lego store with a pretty nice price, so I think I'll take one today :)
