Steph 104th Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Normally Lego releases cool exclusive figs that I have to have and then they come along with this, we would have replaced him with Bolg in the Lake Town set already and now we are getting him again, my word Lego this is shocking. Quote
KristofBD Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Well given that LEGO is not going to make a new mold for an exclusive fig, it was kind of was expectable that it was not going to be a Sauron or Bolg. Old Bilbo or perhaps Thranduil at best. As I said before: it sure looks like a nice torso and given that we expected nothing new, I purely see this one as a bonus. Quote

Bolg, I think would be simple and easily possible like Old Bilbo. Alfrid, I think would be a bit difficult regarding the hat. Quote
Niku Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 That Bain minifigure is like the middle finger as Lego drops the mic and walks away from the Middle-earth theme. Truly disappointing. You made my morning haha  Quote
Lancethecat Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 (edited) The least they could have done was fix Bain by giving him a more accurate hairpiece (maybe Luke Skywalker's hair in brown). An Old Bilbo figure would have made a lot more sense, but it's pretty easy to make one yourself: you just need Balin's head and a hobbit hairpiece painted grey. The goblin from the old Gringotts Bank set has a pretty accurate torso. Edited January 4, 2015 by Lancethecat Quote
Tuinman Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 If this is an excusive for a Blu Ray release, I'm actually quite happy that is Bain, and not a character previously unreleased. Normally these exclusives are not released over here so that would mean Bricklinking it, which could mean I would have to pay high prices for the minifig if I would like to have it. Now I don't have any feeling I should get this one. And I don't have a blu ray player anyway. Quote
Dragonlego27 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 THERE WILL BE ONE MORE SET ER, ONE MORE MINIFIGURE IN 2015 THIS IS IT. THE LAST MIDDLE EARTH MINIFIGURE. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE WHO IT IS! From here: http://item.taobao.c...&id=43330144493 Guessing it's a Bluray promo or something. And don't make a thread for 2015 Hobbit sets... DAMN YOU LEGO! YOU HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE PEOPLE! BAIN! WITH A FANCY GREEN WAISTCOAT AND A GINGER WIG ON! WHO WOULD WANT THAT! And damn you too Just2good! I wanted a Hobbit 2015 topic, the direct desendent of the Future LOTR topic of pointless debate and doomed hope! We still hadn't decided who would win: Smaug or the Balrog! Ah well, I'll guess I'll make the topic anyway-just so we can complain about Bain for ten more pages ;). On a more serious note, I'm going to wait to buy the Lonely Mountain set until the end of January, do you think it'll last that long? Quote
Bugbot2008 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 (edited) That figure is nothing but salt in the wound. As others have said an Old bilbo would have been so intuitive for this application.. Maybe there will be a 3 film box-set or a book later on giving us something actually desired Edited January 4, 2015 by Bugbot2008 Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 That figure is nothing but salt in the wound. As others have said an Old bilbo would have been so intuitive for this application.. Maybe there will be a 3 film box-set or a book later on giving us something actually desired I am actually waiting on all three movies to be released as one set before purchasing them. Surely, they will be bundled together as a trilogy. Whether or not Lego makes a promotion with such a set is anyone's guess, but I would still purchase that over just the BOFA release with the most useless Hobbit minifig imagineable. On a more serious note, I'm going to wait to buy the Lonely Mountain set until the end of January, do you think it'll last that long? My guess is that it will at least be available through Lego S@H. I have seen it at Toys R Us as well band its relatively high cost should keep it from selling too fast. Quote
SMC Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 What is going on with the new sets, is there anywhere online selling them other than lego? Talking about UK btw. Quote
djmangunz Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Has anyone attempted an alternate build or MOC with the Lonely Mountain set? I ended up with a second set because Target send me a destroyed set in the mail and they were kind enough to tell me to keep the original one when they sent me a replacement. I would love to recreate the front gate or another section of Erebor with the second set. Sadly, I am not much of a MOCer myself and would love to see someone else's ideas for inspiration using the Lonely 'Mountain set. Thanks! Quote
Darth Malgus Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Bain reminds me of a joke: "What did the hand say to the face?" "Slap!" Quote
Borador Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 (edited) You know what? I always defend this line. I'm always the guy who says to be happy that we got anything, and I try to defend the choices that LEGO made, even the bad ones. I know some are bad, but I can usually defend them to some extent, but... Well, I just can't defend this... I mean, really? The only thing I remember about Bard's kids were that they were there. I don't remember any of them having red hair, I remember a boy with brown and a girl, I think her hair was blonde? I don't remember. And I think one of the kids got attacked by an orc? But that's all I remember. No names, no roles, or anything. They were barely characters, they were just there. I didn't care to get the one in the Laketown set, and actually had to look up who it was. Now, we get the same one again? What? They literally could not have picked a less significant character for this. Literally. This is just ridiculous. At the very least, they could have made a different kid, though I think we all would've preferred Old Bilbo or something like that. There were tons of other things they could've done. Oh well, I guess it is what it is, but this is just insanity. EDIT: It should be noted I haven't seen Battle of the Five Armies yet. So if Bard's kids have a bigger role in that, I guess it makes some sense (even if this is the DoS variant) Edited January 5, 2015 by Borador Quote
LegoFish Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 SMC: i cant see anyway to get them other than through lego; i got witch king from my nearest lego store (sheffield) and ordered lonely mountain from lego s@h. There was never much of this wave close to me besides my nearest lego shop and theyve cleared them off the shop now, id say lego online is your best bet im afraid. Id say should we all e-mail lego about the naffness of another bain (dont know about everyone else but i never wanted even one and i cant see kids saying "ooo ooo, gotta get me the son of that way cooler character over elves and dwarf lords and old bilbo"), but don't think that would achieve anything. Lego puts so much time into product development, how on earth could they have thought this would be a good idea. Seriously, if lego designers went on this site and put a post saying, heres the figures we could have in this dvd release, pick your fave, then at least 50 characters/variants would come before bain. A second bain at that!!! If just one person registered on eurobricks was present at that meeting, we'd have something fathoms better; ive seen all the amazing things people here have made without a proffesional workshop and heard all the great ideas for other middle earth sets and figures from the members partaking in this thread, how did whoever was in charge of this think this was a good idea. It truly baffles me. On a lighter note, finished the lonley mounatin today and id highly recomend it to anyone who's unsure about getting it. Awesome set!!!! (I've loved the sets from this theme but being 9/10 sure its done and to end it with a bain variant is an enormous let down. Old bilbo would have ruled!! Quote
Dr.Cogg Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 What's really disappointing, is when you look at the other themes and you see all the new minifigs and the detailed printing on those new minifigs, then you think to yourself, "really ,you(meaning Lego) can create new prints and new parts for this theme, for maybe one set, but you can't do the same for LotR and the Hobbit". and then there is the poor set chooses, like the pirate ship over the Balrog and Lego also seems to be teasing use, here are some Example of what I'm talking about: Chima: Olipant and Dol Guldur. NinjaGo: OverLord who is just like Sauron gets two forms and Lego also threw in Dareth who is the Bolg of the series. Quote
bungeshea Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Sauron, yes. Bolg, I think would be simple and easily possible like Old Bilbo. Alfrid, I think would be a bit difficult regarding the hat. I don't remember seeing Alfred wearing his hat for most of BotFA, so if it is a figure based on that film they could just give him black Grima Wormtongue hair. Quote
deskp Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I think Bain was already designed. They didnt go out to design a new figure for this promo. When they made Bain for the set they made a jacket-less version aswell. before knowing wich set he would go in. In DOS he spends a fair bit of his airtime without a jacket, So lego would have gotten the refrence material for that aswell. Seems like a 'wasted oppertunity' but there wasn't really an oppertunity there to begin with. Quote
KristofBD Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 @drCogg: Beorn, Galadriel, Azog, Dain, With King, Thorin with crown, Smaug, Mouth of Sauron, Gandalf the White, Saruman, Arwen, Eomer, Theoden,... plenty of excellent printing and new molds in this theme. Quote
MAB Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Id say should we all e-mail lego about the naffness of another bain (dont know about everyone else but i never wanted even one and i cant see kids saying "ooo ooo, gotta get me the son of that way cooler character over elves and dwarf lords and old bilbo"), but don't think that would achieve anything. There is currently (and officially) only one Bain. Sure you can tell LEGO that you've seen another version for sale that is possibly stolen from a factory on a Chinese website, but I doubt they'd even acknowledge it. Quote
nymmerod Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Out of all the disappointments this year regarding Lego Hobbit, this Bain rehash is the worst. Why even bother? I think the only thing that could have been more insulting is if they had just given us that gold Legolas Greenleaf again. Quote
Lancethecat Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Are we 100% sure that Bain really is going to be included with the next DVD release? Did it say so where you got the picture, just2good? Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Out of all the disappointments this year regarding Lego Hobbit, this Bain rehash is the worst. Why even bother? I think the only thing that could have been more insulting is if they had just given us that gold Legolas Greenleaf again. Haha, I knew someone was going to say Legolas would have been worse. As tired as I am of that minifig as well, there are at least a couple of advantages it has over a Bain rehash. The hair has elf army builder potential, the torso and pants can be used in other settings, and the legs at least bend. Honestly, if you had presented me with a list of every Hobbit minifig and had me rank which one I would prefer in a rehash, Bain would have come in dead last. Legolas would be fairly low on that list for me too, but Bain would own him the race to the bottom. Even a Gandalf repeat would be better. Are we 100% sure that Bain really is going to be included with the next DVD release? Did it say so where you got the picture, just2good? I am not. All that was shown was a picture. My first thought was "yep, I would never have guessed him.". The second thought was that April 1 was still four months away, and there could not be any relation to that. I do reserve some doubt that this going to be the promotional minifig. It looks way too deliberate and stupid given the general fandom's reaction and sometimes criticism to the Middle Earth lines. Would Lego or Warner Brothers really believe this is the best way to promote the product? Quote
Lego lover 88 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 They can't even at least give us a minifig that is from battle of five armies to be with the DVD Quote
Blakstone Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Minifig selection throughout this line is a collaboration between Warner Brothers and LEGO. However, for promotional ones with DVDs, I would expect the WB Home Video as well as possibly Target has a say in the final selection. I would have expected LEGO to do sketches of several characters and have discussions with the other stakeholders. If so, I wonder what the other options would have been. But make no mistake: the purpose of the promotional minifig is not to complete the line or give us a needed character. It is to sell more or higher dollar DVDs. I never bought the DoS discs. The minfig was a rehash for me. I am still not sure about buying the disc for Bot5A either. This Bane minifig does not motivate me. I suspect some marketing guy at WB Home Video or Target thought it would get little kids to pressure their parents to buy it. For AFOLs though it is a loss. I only lack The Lonely Mountain and now this Bane exclusive to have a complete Middle Earth collection... and yet I am having trouble finding any excitement to complete it. Quote
KristofBD Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Lonely Mountain is a great set though... Quote
