I mainly bought the set to get smaug because I thought he was awesome and another win for me is that I have been working on a dwarf mine and this summed everything up.

I think the sales for the Hobbit theme are irrelevant due to the fact that we have gotten a pretty well rounded & complete feeling collection of sets for the trilogy. As far as set/mini-figure choices, placement & pricing, here are my gripes...

The Lonely Mountain ... Yeah, maybe $10-20 too expensive but I didn't mind the $130 price. I love the set. It really is a beautiful set that IMO captures the general essence of what took place there. Realistically, there is no way to perfectly capture ALL of Erebor in a stand alone Lego set. They did a great job, EXCEPT... it should have included King Thorin and 2 dwarves other than Kili & Fili. This also should have been part of the DoS wave.

The Battle of the Five Armies ... EPIC FAILURE. From the mini-figure selection through to the build itself. Remove Thorin, Legolas & Azog. Replace with Thranduil and a generic Dwarf & Elf soldier, add a Battle-Troll. Remove the giant Orc Crossbow machine and replace with a much smaller screen accurate catapult (maybe it can attach to the Battle-Troll), and revise the Dale structure completely to 3 small buildings (similar to the 3 Lake Town structures). Thus, more accurate play value and also encouraging multiple purchases.

Mirkwood Elf Army ... FAILURE. This structure was never in the movie. This should have been The Woodland Realm River Gate (like what DeskP MOC'd) and included Bolg along with 2 Mirkwood Elf Sentry's in place of the hooded soldiers. DeskP's set is gorgeous and not only would it properly represent what was in the film, it would be a tie-in with the Barrel Escape set AND Mirkwood Spiders.

Lastly, there should have been a Ravenhill set that included Thorin, Kili, Fili, Bilbo, Legolas, Tauriel, Azog & Bolg and a decently sized Ravenhill build.

That is my 2 cents

What other hobbit, lotr, and castles sets do you own?

Lonely mountain is a great set if Lego fairly priced it. The way I see it, Lego thought only afols would buy it, so they jacked the price up because they know we'll buy it anyways. Brickjagger's dragon from castle is a good point. Kids will just pretend that dragon is smaug and so will their parents; for $100 less

The lonely mountain is very tiny for the $130 you spend it. For $20 more you can get a much larger modular set. Make no mistake, I like the set, the throne is very nice and smaug has a great mold.

I disagree that Lonely Mountain was targeted at AFOLs. The play features like the breakaway throne steps and the gold launcher are not really things AFOLS care about. If anything at all was a nod to AFOLS, perhaps it was the Witch King set. I think the biggest mistake Lego made with LM was putting Smaug in it. Already, it would have been about an $80 set without the dragon. They honestly thought that a $130 set would be Johnny's Christmas present under the tree. Dont get me wrong, there are plenty of kids out there who really badly wanted LM. If course, a lot of us badly want a mansion to live in, but we share the same problem those kids have with LM, it is out of the price range. I agree that Dragon Mountain probably took the place of Smaug, or simply other action figures, Lego themes, and toys did. I have said this before, but they should have placed Smaug in the Lake Town set. It would have been a much more approachable price and maybe more people would have bought it.

With that said, it is probably a good investment down the long road. When Smaug is no longer on the shelves, some people are going to want him. This could be the only time Lego ever delves into Tolkien. He might not be the next UCS Millenium Falcon, Galaxy Explorer sealed in box, or the Cafe Corner, but he will command a high price somewhere down the road.

Here's how I think the final Hobbit wave should have been:

#1 The Lonely Mountain: The set should have been the entrance into Erebor(with exploding play feature) and the throne room, the minifigures should have been, King Thorin, Balin, Dain, an Iron Hill Dwarf, an Armored Elf and 2 Armored Orcs.

#2 Lake Town Battle: The set should have replaced the Orcs with 2 Lake Town Soldiers, no Tauriel, add Smaug, a slightly larger boat, Bard and bain are fine.

#3 Witch King Battle: should have been changed completely to, White Council Vs Sauron: The set would include, Broken Stairs with a doorway at the top(with light up feature) and a little piece of ruins of Dol Guldur, the minifigures included: Sauron, Armored Ghost Nazgul, Elrond, Saruman and Galadriel. This set would be an add on to Dol Guldur Battle.

#4 Battle of Five Armies: like Atreyu2112 said, Change Dale into 3 smaller buildings(with exploding play features), get rid of the ballista and add a troll, minifigures included: Armored King Thranduil, an Armored Orc, Bilbo, Bard, Tauriel and an Armored Elf.

#5 Raven Hill: The set would include, Ruins of Raven Hill( play feature, falling tower) and the minfigures included: White Armored Azog, Fili, Kili, Bolg,Thorin and Legolas.

I also have battle of five armies, mirkwood elf wall, riddles of the ring, bag end, helms deep, helms deep wall, orthanc, black gate and I think that is it

Thanks for the link.

That are really bad news and it's very frustrating knowing that there won't be DLC with the missing characters and levels. The Hobbit/LotR theme really deserved a better ending...

Hi everyone, my mother said that if I can sell 10 Lego items on BrickLink by March 28th, she'll let me buy The Lonely Mountain. Is it a better deal to buy it for $130 and double VIP points or to buy it for $105 on BrickLink from Spain? I'm in the USA. Thanks!

Shipping a set that large (it's a big box) from Spain to the US would negate any value you'd save from the cheaper price. It would be better in that case to just buy direct from Lego and get a bunch of VIP points (what like $20 worth)--plus I think you'd get free shipping.

I totally agree with Captain Nemo! Getting the Lonely Mountain from TLG with double VIP points is a better deal than ordering it from bricklink for 105 €. The packaging of that set is quite big (the size is comparable to the Helms Deep set) so ordering the set from Europe to the USA will be very expensive...

If you ordered that set set from Spain, you would also have to factor insurance into the equation. It may not be mandatory to buy it, but not doing so with a price that high is really taking a big risk.

Any ideas on when this wave will retire? I kinda feel like it will go away around the end of this year to make way for the 2016 Castle line (that hopefully exists). That seems like a short run but I'm not sure how it usually goes with licensed themes. The fact that very few Hobbit sets were ever on shelves around me makes it seem to me that it will be short lived but maybe not.

I honestly don't think that the sets will make it past June. After a movie is out of cinemas, Lego tends to pull all products related to it off the shelves quickly to make way for new products. I don't think the wave sold too well, anyway.......

Interestingly enough, I was at Walmart today and in their clearance section they randomly had about eight Attack of the Warg sets priced at $35 and one Mirkwood spider set for $20. I don't know where they got them from, since they came out of no where and I've not seen Hobbit or LotR sets there for months; but apparently they've not sold them all--and these are from the last wave!

What is with that? I still haven't seen any Hobbit 3 sets in chain stores. Hobbit 2 sets lasted days or a few months only (depending on the set). LOTR and Hobbit 1 sat for quite a bit (except Uruk Hai Army).

We only got one shipment of sets in Australia :hmpf_bad: They sold very quickly :sadnew:

It sucks, doesn't it? I never even saw the sets in stores; I had to order the three smaller ones off the Big W website with free store pickup. I still don't have TLM :hmpf_bad:

I got mine from S@H ages ago for some reason I can't recall, finally built them the other day. Great presentation, some really awesome prints & fun builds. Smaug kicks.

But with such limited availability the 2 new orcs are going to be much pricier on BL than the previous wave 2 orc. Finally some variety in face prints and it's just too bad I'm unlikely to be forking out for an army at reasonable cost. I have 2 of each new print, versus 20 odd of each previous one. :def_shrug:
